  • Hmm. Interesting. MMOs began as sandbox and evolved to be more themepark. Single player games began as themepark and evolved to be more sandbox. Perhaps both are approaching the same level of hybrid, but from opposite directions?
  • Mutable term used as a pejorative by people who dislike themepark games.

  • I'm fully expecting that in a few years time I'll be switching on my Playstation 4 and logging into my favourite MMO. I'm just really hoping the damn thing has a keyboard and mouse.
  • Originally posted by Khalathwyr By that same line of thought, though, even the AAA themeparks that are being cranked out aren't measuring up. If we were to go with this line, only WoW and maybe LOTRO (last I heard around 750K, don't hold me to that …
  • Originally posted by Interesting Ive been reading similar threads all over the internet. There was never such a huge demand for a "virtual world" like these days. We are witnessing a history backslash of our genre right now, cant you see it? …
  • Originally posted by Khalathwyr Think it would be best to extrapolate on that "huge difference" too to show that the AoC and WAR were made by AAA comapnies where Darkfall and Mortal are not. Huge difference in the amount of money thrown at those gam…
  • Originally posted by PyscoJuggalo Virtual Worlds are not just dead, ALL MMORPGS ARE DEAD. WoW has proven one thing, the MMORPG market is a niche and nothing more.  We have had countless WoW clones out there, countless games that copy the mechin…
  • Originally posted by Kyleran I played WOW for over 18 monhts  with its frantic, no down time game mechanics and I still know exactly....... zero people, while I'm still close friends with people from Lineage 1, DAOC and Lineage 2, but then those gam…
  • I wouldn't, but I can suggest a couple of changes that might make it more palatable. 1. That it not be permanent. Perhaps losing a duel n the Alpha server could banish you to the Beta server for a short period of time like a week or so. 2. The d…
  • I love twitch FPS/TPS combat for ranged fighting such as spells and guns, but I can't stand it for melee. Everyone just runs around like headless chickens swinging wildly. I'd much rather have twitch-based melee combat built on quicktime-style count…
  • I'm waiting on TOR. Bioware. Star Wars. KOTOR Timeline. Awesome. Keeping an eye on Secret World though. Looks interesting.

  • Originally posted by Wharg0ul Yes, there are old-school virtual world games still around.....you know WHY they're still around?? Nothing new in that vein has been made. Don't try to tell me that they "aren't popular" when every day we read post afte…

  • I clear out a location of quests before I head out. In my experience, many hubs have several quests that are interlinked; I might get one that sends me to a cave to pick 6 mushrooms, and another to gather 6 venom from poisonous snakes that happen …
  • Originally posted by Alberel Bringing all the elements of other games together is still only evolutionary and it is still nothing new, same goes for becoming casual friendly. To be 'punk' would require a game to abandon the very fundamentals of main…
  • Originally posted by Alberel There's no preference or opinion in the fact that WoW is not equivalent to punk. WoW is only evolutionary, it didn't do anything particularly new or different compared to it's predecessors, it merely improved upon them…

  • Originally posted by Alberel Punk was reactionary, WoW is evolutionary. The indie MMOs being produced recently are a reaction to WoW since no AAA devs are willing to stray from WoW's template. WoW isn't 'punk' on an impact level at all. WoW is the…
