Other games, no games at all. I know some who still play Starcraft and Diablo, as well as other single player games. A couple play no games whatsoever anymore, really. I know a few who are playing other mmos such as Neverwinter, Planetside 2, Warham…

Cool story bro.
Join a guild. Socialize when you're online or in a group.
Most people will actually end up being pretty chatty if you talk to them first, usually someone just has to break the ice.
Problem solved.
I would also recommend giving Vanguard a shot if you haven't already.
It has a big open world, and although I couldn't get into it, I would suggest checking it out, it is free-to-play now, after all.
Do you have Steam? There are a number of free-to-play mmos on there, you could kill some time checking some of them out, and who knows, maybe you'll find one you like.
I could see perma-death working in a game that was properly set up for it.

Warhammer Online can be fun for a month or two, if you don't mind paying a subscription.
Edit: Also if you're just looking for a filler, Steam has a number of free to play fps games and such you might want to check out. I've tried Blacklight per…
If its my first play through, yes.
If its a situation where I'm repeating content I've already done while leveling an alt, achievement whoring, etc, then I just click accept.
