The argument that most gamers are casual and want to sit down and enjoy a video game for 30 minutes seems to be common, but it's patently false. Before the novelty wore off, SWTOR's average play times were quite high. I guarantee that most gamers fi…

And you are basing this little rant on what exactly?
Maybe on all the information that SOE published so far?
Clearly not, since he thinks it wi…
I wouldn't want to go back to camping mobs because it's already been done, but you can probably recreate some of the EQ magic by incorporating a lot of its elements. Developers have done nothing but strip this genre of everything that made it worthw…

Solo content isn't conducive to grouping and forming the kind of social dynamic that makes mmos unique. It's just not. The idea is to join others in conquering something that can't be done alone and depending on others for survival -- you know, that…
If you divide solo content and group content equally, players tend to choose the path of least resistance and you're stuck with a game in which there's little incentive to group.
Some of the arguments I'm hearing are ridiculous. "If you need to gro…
I have no problem with solo content as long as it doesn't comprise most of the game. If you want to kill your little frogs on the outskirts of town that's fine, but you shouldn't be able to advance through the entire game by yourself. And limiting g…
You guys realize that every "accessible" MMO of the last 8 or 9 years has been a disaster, right? Furthermore, saying a certain game will be "niche" and thus unsuccessful is an unfalsifiable claim.
Originally posted by Icewhite Originally posted by Dracock When you compare the community of group centered games to solo centered games, it's either ignorant or intellectually dishonest to claim that there is no difference.

Soloing in an MMO should never be the most effective way to progress. And if you prefer to solo, you should really examine why you play these games in the first place.
I can't think of anything more mundane than forming groups to tackle trivial obj…
The OP misses the point of "encouraged" grouping. The social dynamic is completely different when you're tackling obstacles with other people and having to depend on them to survive and succeed.
If you don't understand that there are social nuances…

Quite the opposite, I find that people like the OP are precisely what's wrong with this genre. "Casual" MMOs are simply those that have abandoned bad, outdated, or clunky mechanics in favor of more convenient, accessibl…
What exactly would make EQ Next a "niche" game? MMOs aren't esoteric like they were in the 90s. If it has compelling gameplay they could add death penalties and more "hardcore" features and it would still do quite well.

I'm working on a UO sequel. Donate to my kickstarter campaign.
I probably wouldn't use the camping model again, but EQ did a lot of things right that modern games won't even explore. The problem is that developers are now on the other extreme and making everything convenient and readily accessible.
Why do people keep rehashing this lousy argument? First of all, no one was expecting this to be a remake. Secondly, most EQ "players" I know (myself included) aren't opposed to change. We just don't like the direction of the genre and how developers…
