New to EQ 2

he11codhe11cod Member Posts: 4

I am so sick of WoW.  Although I'm almost level 60, dedicating 2-5 hours to a raid just to gear up doesnt sound too fun.  Anyway, I have been playing the trial of the isle and it showed me what a good game EQ2 is.  Before I make the commitment to buy the game, I just have a couple questions:

What do the different server types mean and how would it change the gameplay?

Is EQ2 heavily into raiding?

Is PvP only available on a PVP server?

    1. RP=role play server. PvP=player vs player. Not having ever played on a PvP server, I can't tell you how it affects game play. I hate PvP.

    2. There is some raiding yes. When you get to the highest levels. But you won't get bored. They come out with a new expansion or adventure pack every six months or so. And they're constantly upgrading.

    3. There are two ways you can PvP without being on a PvP server. You can right click on another player and choose the duel option. It sends a request to the player for a duel (you can also single left click them and then type /duel). Or there are arenas. Not a clue where they are or how to get to them. Like I said, I hate PvP.

    1) As am I, and I went to play EQ2 as well. I regret spending any money on this lousy excuse of a game.

    2) The Trial of the Isle is not the truth of the game. The trial is small, you feel like you can navigate easily, the quests are interesting and the objectives are lit up with waypoints. Tradeskilling can actually make better or of equal quality to the quest loot, and the mobs are not difficult to kill.

The trial is a lie. The full game throws you out in the cold with no real direction or any motivation to do anything. The Tradeskilling is nerfed beyond belief and is now as useless as WoW's. You will find yourself walking around on "epic running adventures" across bleak and boring landscape for hours rather than actually getting anywhere. Not to mention, now that you're not on the isle, your gear sucks and equal or lower mobs rip you to shreds.

Looking for a way to reduce the tedium? You need to buy a mount to get around faster, much like Warcrap, but this time you can use one at any level and they're ungodly expensive (you wont get one until level 70 anyway, with the "free magic carpet quest" unless you buy gold from chinese farmers or have a rich and generous guild... which I find that there is none for newbies). Even after capping my level at 70 with the KoS expansion, I found not one single guild on Mistmoore which could actually help with anything... everyone at the top levels are too busy to group, as they are farming gear to sell for jacked up prices on the broker.

Did I mention that the community is snobbish and not even slightly helpful? It's a nice break from the children of the whorde, to be certain, but a few weeks into it and they're still the same: boring, half-wit middle aged gamers who laugh at you for being uninformed.

This is not better than WoW, it's just the polar opposite... big with a snobbish community and too open ended. Rather than being small with an immature community while being too linear. They do share two aspects, though: The end games suck, and they're grindaliciously boring.

Gee, you're so nice Plasuma. I think I figured out why your experience was so bad. Because of your attitude. No one likes to play with someone so obviously stuck on themselves and what they want.

Your a clown Plasuma. I just looked up your character names on the Mistmoore server and this is what i found.

    Gygax- Level 7 Berserker

    Gerbo- Level 9 Wizard

    Plasuma-Level 24 Monk

Get out of here, you are the joke of your family.

    For the server types:

    • Normal:  There's no open PvP (although you can still duel people and ther are arenas) and not RP; standard server option (I played here mostly)
    • RP:  As you probably expect, these are servers for people who like to roleplay
    • PvP:  This is full on good vs. evil PvP.  You can't talk with, group with, or join guilds with people from the opposing side, and basically every zone in the game leaves you open for people to kill you.  The lower level zones have level ranges where people more than a certain number of levels higher than you can't attack you, but the higher end zones are completely open.  It is significantly harder to level and do quests on these servers, but it's the only "real" PvP you're going to find in EQ2.
    • PvP RP:  Same as a normal PvP server, but for people who like to roleplay while they PvP.
    • Station Exchange (SE):  These servers and the servers only support SOE's station exchange service, which is basically SOE's own version of IGE.  If you don't like the idea of people being able to buy gold/items in game with real money, DONT JOIN ONE OF THESE SERVERS.

    ---------

As for raiding, much (but not all) of the high end game does involve raiding of some sort.  It's better with the newer expansions than it used to be (when the game first came out, after hitting 50 all there was left for me to do was raid raid raid), but most of the content at the top is still geared towards raiders.  However, there are more raids zones than WoW, they are more fun than in WoW (IMO), and almost all of them are tied to some quest line.

    ---------

Non-PvP servers have PvP in the form of duels and arenas, but if you really want PvP you have to join a PvP server.  Note:  PvP servers still have dueling and arenas as well.

    Hope that helps!

Schutzbar - Human Warrior - Windrunner Alliance - World of Warcraft
Nihilanth - Kerra Paladin - Blackburrow - EverQuest II
    XBL Gamertag - Eagle15GT

I play EQ2 and enjoy the game a lot. I notice Plasuma has retired from all the games he's tried, but I'll defend him a little bit. It's always possible for people to not enjoy a game, we're all different. All I can tell you is I think EQ2 is a lot of fun and the community has been very helpful. But it's possible he ran into some people having an off-day and it drove him off the game, that can happen anywhere. As for his complaints about speed, he has several options - play one of the bard classes who get speed songs, play a paladin or shadowknight who get free mounts at level 20, etc. The game is what you make of it, and there are so many class choices you can find out what's most fun for you.

Personally I think you'll find the community very helpful, I recommend the Newbie Yards forum on the official EQ2 forums for any questions you have, also.

ive played again today on the Trial of Isle...there was a lot of people,i was in a group of 4 doing quests...it was fun, people were sympatic...I think its worth the buy.For some reasons(not only the graphics)the whole thing seems to be more mature than WoW(which i was bored after a week 1/2)...The first quests arent all like "Kill 5 bears and bring 5 bear teeths" or " kill 6 wolves and bring 6 wolf fur"...pfft.

I definitely think of buying it,while waitin AGE OF CONAN.

Get off the isle and you will get those quest of collecting so many bat wings, or orc scalps ect.  The whole newbie isle was completely revamped from its original form which was more bland.  Basically these companies have to hook players in the first thirty minutes if they want em to lay the money down, the newbie isle was revamped to do this and it seems its working lol.  Once ya get past that though ............... the game will turn back into the mmo ideas you know and love.

Personally, I've found quests in the mainland just as fun as the quests you get on the isle.

Maybe people should try reading the text instead of just clicking through it.

    lmao.

As an ex EQ2 player who still has a fondness for the game I was gonna address a few of Plas's 'facts', but you saved me the bother.

That, as they say in the Queen's tongue, is pwned.

My entire group moved over from WoW a few months ago.  We love it.  Much deeper game, community is MUCH better (I actually enjoy grouping now as apposed to dreading it), and the quests are great.  Sure there are lots of regular go kill x quests but there are lots of others too.  I just finished my third Herritage Quest, and while they are really hard they are very rewarding.

This game is harder to get sucked into than WoW because if is much deeper.  If not for me leading her throuhg the beginning parts I think my wife would have been lost.  Fortunately we have a great guild that just play for fun and are more than willing to help out people.

I personally love tradecrafting.  I am an armoroer and can make armor better than most people wear.  Sure you can raid like crazy for better stuff but for me the reward is not worth the effort.

With three levels to worry about, adventure, artisian, and guild you will be buys for a long time before you HAVE to raid.

This post really makes me question what you're looking for? You've played two games, which by your own words are polar opposits, and you hated them both. Kind of makes me think you're just not cut out to enjoy an MMO.
