Why so many people hung up over graphics?

So many threads and posts by people complainging about a game because of its graphics as if that were the most important thing.

In my opinion good graphics come way down the list and a game won't last on graphics alone.

A good game with bad graphics is far better than a good looking game with.. no substance.

Like those Hollywood blockbuster which are full of special effects but bore you to hell with a simplistic storyline and wooden acting - a game based on graphics will only have a superficial effect - and will lose its players in months rahter than years.

so what do you think?

cause its sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo pretty.  also its not about graphics and gameplay; but rather cause humans like prettiness and are judgemental when looking at screenies to see the gameplay, graphics makeing a game look like a full dev team made it,  and making a game look more professional.

I find it amazing that by 2020 first world countries will be competing to get immigrants.

Graphics draw ppl to the game.

Only once the game is old and its graphics is considered "bad" will the people that still enjoy the game say "I dont care about graphics". You know I am right. I am the same way.

I still enjoy "bad graphics" games, but one of the reasons the game attracted me was its graphics. Now since the game is 8 years old I still love it but am not turned away for its looks.

Could you mention which games you mean ?Most games people rag on for having bad graphics usually have a ton more wrong with em to go along with it.

Graphics do not make a game but I will be the first to admit that if I see a brand new game release with graphics that would have been thought of as "bad" years ago I lose a lot of respect for the game right away.  I'm sorry it is NOT hard to code good graphics with today's engines.  It's just not.  If a game developer can't be bothered to put decent graphics (and no I'm not looking for top notch knock your socks off quality here) then I immediately question how much effort went into the game itself.  I certainly won't BUY the game until there's a free trial so that I can try the game risk free.

In wow, even if you have the most uber armor, it doesnt look good imho.

In other games, you get an armor, it looks cool because of its intricate detail and realism.

Thats why we roleplay because we want to be somebody else virtually, and having graphics that depicits light, texture, environment and everything else as close as possible to the real thing, the closer you get to imagining that this in fact can be reality.

It is true that graphics will darw a player in and allow for easier immersion in the game world, however this is a poor selling point from a developers standpoint.  The ability to create realistic graphics improves rapidly and drastically, making the game with cutting edge graphics one year, old hat the next.  If a developer expects their titles to live longer than that they need to put something behind the graphics that players will appreciate even after the latest thing has come out.  It is true that great graphics give a sense of polish and professionalism, but if this is the only feature then the game will be short lived.
