Todays mmo's are getting pretty bad.   Could you imaging if your car ran like a game after you just bought it.  This leads to my little troubles today.

While waiting on somethign new, I decided to play FFXi for something to do.  Went and got it to save the download time.

Starting with the installation of the launcher to the game took most all the afternoon.  The updates were unbeilivable.  Finally got thought it only to have to patch again.

Kool,  Finally got it installed.  Some 4 hours after patches.

Wen tto play and BAMM   Network Error.   Looked another few hours for help in solving the problem, but no luck.

Now all this is kool,  Bad choice of game for me or just bad carma day.   So i decided to unsintall it.

This is where I really got pissed off.   It is (Because I am still uninstalling where I type this) still uninstalling after 20 min.

Yeah, try to find out where to cancel your account.  That takes  a few also.

Why am I posting this.  Easy.  The manufactures of todays games are taking advantage of us.  They put out games that are broke,  Take forevever to get installed, patched and signed up for  only to find out that the game is buggy, laggy, down too much and just plain bad in some cases.

We should be demanding our money back when the servers go down too much.  We should flood there e-mail when they apply patches that are either too big or just screw up the game.

Just think,  Is there any other item in your life where you would tolerate this.

BTW, FFXI is only one of the many I have looked at this month.  I always try the new games and beta's, or game I havent tried,  to catch the next big game or just have fun with some old ones.

I would have posted this under a review, but my rating here is not high enough.  I don't post enough to get it up.

You do know you can just call up SE for help, instead of surfing forums for hours.

Oh, and Final Fantasy XI has been out for 4 years now.

The game takes up maybe 15 Gigabytes, which is probably why it took a while to uninstall.
Did you check the website to see if the servers were actually down?  They update every 5 minutes, and the servers are rarely down.
Also, you may want to defragment/ optimize your computer.  If you're installing a MMORPG each month, your computer is probably suffering the effects.
As for the four hours of patching, what can I say?  The game is alive, and has a lot of new content every few months.  The patch server doesn't make you download your files over again; it compares each file to the newest version and fills in the blanks.  So all of the 4 hours was new content, not old content patched over and over again.
How does 4 hours of patching over 4 years indicate that developers don't respect the community?

Really? It took you that long to install?

I recently installed it on my laptop. Took about 30 minutes to actually install the game and expansions.

Took 25 minutes to update the launcher.

an hour and a half for the game itself.

    Your computer sucks.

I assume this guy's firewall was blocking the game, or if he's on windows XP he didn't tell XP to accept it, or maybe he's running some program like peerguardian causing him to not connect. To say the least, your error wasn't Server related, its client side.

  • GarrikGarrik Member UncommonPosts: 962

Atleast try to understand that this was your computers problem not FFXI's Telaki is right with this one that is exactly what it sounds like.

Its a good job you cant review otherwise it would have just been another guy who hadnt played the game trying to rate it and rating it badly due to his own malfunction.

Iit appears that few actually read the post.  It's not a stab at the Game Play of FFXI.   Its that the current state of most MMO's.  I purchased FFXI because I have friends that play it and I trust them when they tell me its fun and I bet the graphics are great.

If you are a Full Time gammer, One that doesnt work or spends all there free time stuck in a game,  Then maybe for you, a hour patch is kool.  For the rest of us, we only get a few hours a week. We have real jobs, Families and friends we don't have to type to.

About  FFXI,  The patch files themselves based on the CD's i just purchased, took 2.5 hours. Period.  You cant make that faster unless you have a faster internet connection.  And I am on a 1.5 DSL.  Which is not perfect, but plenty fast.

To be fair to all games,  Most games will either not run or run poorly on just about any Graphics Card except for the newest ATI or nVidia.  So little johny geting his first Dell for school cant even play most of the MMO's today.

The problem is our fault.  We accept huge patches, We accept the extreme machine requirements.  We love our reflective waters and light perfect shadows.   Although this is good for viewing and playing, how many players can spend unlitmited amount of time and  money to play a game.

Another example, DAOC.  I love the game,  But when TOA came out.  The lag was so bad on an average machine that, for our guild and alliance, we had to upgrade our machines.  Many could not afford to spend the extra money.  So, they had to continue to play classic and SI. While the ones that could do the Masters Levels dominated RVR.

    Blah Blah Blah ......

I disabled my AV and FW to check the connection .  It appears to be a uPNP issue since we block uPnP to prevent abuse.

My computer doesn't suck  Trust me. If you realy want to know, i will send you my sysinfo / dxdiag.xml.   I have been playing mmo's Since they first come out. I have max toons on many of them.  Although my all time favorite is DAOC.  I have been in computer hardware and software for 23 years. Including developing REAL games.  Casino slot machines.

Exactly how long it took me to install after I reformatted my PC a few weeks back.

Another repsone that has no idea about my pc. But Here, Gauge for yourself.

    Intel P4 3200 Dual Core

    2 GB DDR-2 Memory

    2 160gb Raid (performance)

    nVidia PCI Express 6200 w/ 256mb

    If this sucks,  ...

Still  the point Goolup,  First, you made this loggin just to repost what you did earlier. Or atleast in my opion.

Second,  You are still making my point, Even if your times are correct.  1.5 hours to install a game just to get ready to play it.    It took me less time to install Microsoft Visual Studio 2005.   Which i get paid for using.

It seems that this must be a generation issue.  My friends that are my age, feel about the same as I.  We remeber playing ZORK on Compuseve.  We make the dinasours look young. While my employee's that are younger (20's), think its ok to take that long.

This will be my last post on the subject.  But if you don't agree with me and you read pc gammer or watch G4, you will have seen or heard of these complaints before.

My god bless you,  You need it.

  • RinicRinic Member Posts: 715
People still watch G4? I thought that was the TV network that played games for the first 15 minutes and based reviews on that?

I played ZORK, so what this shows nothing. You had trouble trying to install a game oh well move on if you cant be bothered to even attempt to get into the game properly no loss to us. If you havnt noticed in most cases FFXI gets good reviews and the ones that it has had a lower rated review is usually from a guy who cant be bothered to play the game for more than an hour.

  • It's obvious you had a lot of trouble with the game, a lot more than usual. I play in a rat-wheeled machine: Athlon 2Mhz, 512MB RAM, geForce 64Mb, with a 2MB connection (the only worthy thing).

The thing is: okay, 15gb is A LOT ammount of the HD that will be taken away... But if it doesn't, it won't be as beaultiful and as worthy of my moeny investments each month. I wont pay to play a WoW or something. Pay to waste my time on a pointless game. I have a lot of time to play the game, so... why not? Just waited for some download and now I have tons of fun each day

    me either...

I think they just get scared when they see the first update pack to download, after some time installing the game...

On my computer the three supposedly take up 17.9 Gig.   That's according to Add/Remove Programs though, so who knows.  Anyway, I gotta say that it wasn't worth answering the OP's origninal Complaint-Fest with any technical support help, as he continues to rant against "All MMOs" and blow off any help.  Nobody goes to the "Final Fantasy XI" forum to talk about all games, generally.  Seek help, troll .
  • Menchi_koMenchi_ko Member Posts: 24

on my computer FFXI takes ~7.5gb (edit: with all three expansions). In fact I've only used 11 gb total on my harddrive and I have a few other games installed so I can't see how it is possible for it to take more.

never had a problem with installation or crashes either =O Haven't even noticed a bug yet. I dunno, maybe the OP just had bad luck?

FFXI took a total of approximately 2.5 hours to install on my computer.  It took it's sweet time with those first CDs and I think ToAT or whatever it's called went relatively fast, even thought it was on a DVD.  The updates I didn't even bother timing.  It look longer than 30 minutes for the first stage (of 3), so I set it to go and went to bed.  It's not like I'm not running a decent system.  It just takes its sweet time and lingers at certain percentages during the install for extreme amounts of time.

I'm more concerned about other "features" of the game though, like the very single-minded interface which prevents a player from even trying to do more than one thing at a time, from locking out commands/macros while viewing status/other windows to also locking out macros if the log window is selected (for expanding, so one can see what the heck happens in that clutter that is all of the message text that flies past), to even requiring programming macros to make any intelligent use of skills in the first place.  Oh, and then there's the fact that one cannot play the game in the window or switch tasks in the game... I can't play it on my desktop because I cannot give up the ability to multitask.  Thus I play it on my laptop while my desktop stays open for chatting and the inevitable trip to Gamefaqs/Alakhazam so I can get to the next step in building fame or crafting skill or whatever else without having to talk to everyone in town _and_ everyone in every linkshell I'm in.

If only some work was done on the UI this game would be a lot better than it is.

I mind you haven't give the chance to really "know" the game... agreed that we are wrong accepting GBs of patches that toke a whole quarter of day but, is the natural grow....

btw, there's no need to say how much mmo you played or how much years you work on TI, since, Internet is free-to-say-anything and no one matters about how old are you in games or how hot rated is your PC.... it's only ego feed and don't solve anything....

    Re: The OP

It took me a long time to get it all installed and patched, but I just went and did something else while it was doing it. *shrug*

I am not a full-time gamer. I am not even a serious gamer. I play only a few hours a week and my computer is old and crappy. I am patient though, and I am perfectly willing to let my computer do stuff without watching it. There's always laundry to do while patching, etc. Uninstalling was no problem for me, but maybe you were, in fact, just having a bad day.

I couldn't quite get used to the controls of FFXI, I didn't meet many people, and my husband wouldn't try it, so I ended up leaving anyway, but I did actually play it off and on for a month.

    UltraPure...

I'll give you this.. SE could do a good job of streamlining the setup process to get players into the game and playing. It is a bit convoluted. However, if well over 500-600k people managed to get through it over the course of what.. 5 years? 4? 6? I forget... It's certainly not insurmountable. AndI know for a fact that many of those who play it are your contemporaries... "making dinosaurs look old". I have a friend who also has a wife and child and doesn't have hours upon hours to play.. doesn't stop him. If there's a large patch, he lets it run overnight and plays it the next day.

The difference between a normal game and a MMO is, obviously, that there is far more content in a MMO. In FFXI, you're talking upwards of 6-8 Gigs. That's alot of data to be uncompressed and copied. And, depending on what version of the game you bought the patching time would be considerably different. Reason being, if you didn't buy the expansion, it still has to download a lot of new content so that your character can still see ToAU content, even though you can't access it yet.

As for "accepting patches"... what would you have them do? Release a new CD every time they have to patch the game? Freeze the game's development so there never are any more patches? What would be your solution to that? There's gonna be game updates, there's gonna be lots and lots and lots of new data created.. it's gotta get to us *somehow*...

    Right?

It's not as though they're releasing a 3 gig patch every week.

I feel ya... I hate waiting for a patch, too... but your reaction is way over-the-top.

    Relax, will ya?
