unreal 3 engine

- 1.10 What sort of technology are you using for your primary graphics engine for Vanguard?

We're
using a heavily modified version of Unreal 2.x, and it continues to be
heavily modified in just about every area -- we'll re-do the network
code, we've already just about totally re-written the rending side of
things to get bump mapping, etc. in there, we've made it seamless
world, we've completely replaced the player character technology
(skinned FPS models don't cut it in an MMOG), plus a lot more.

We
feel very confident this modified engine will be perfect for Vanguard
at release (just as, like you mentioned, the L2 guys successfully
morphed the engine for their MMOG).

Will we switch to 3.0?
Well, we look at 3.0 and learn from it all the time, but as to
officially switching over to that code base, it would be huge
endeavor... it would both slow us down right now, plus 3.0 just isn't
as mature as the 2.x code base so we'd be taking some risks. That said,
at some point after Vanguard's release, I could certainly see us making
the transition.

well, good soe got the license for the u3 engine :/

Are you suggesting that it is a bad thing they got the U3 engine license?  If so, why?  I think it is great they are looking at new-end engines and thinking ahead for engine transfers in the future.  Also, isn't it Sigil with that license and not $OE? Do not forget, at this stage in the game, Sigil is in control of the game, $OE is only distributing.  To say otherwise is mere speculation.

Since SOE licensed the Unreal 3 engine, can they now use the engine for all of their upcoming games or is the license restricted to a single title? Just curious how licensing actually works...

It depends on what was in the terms of use, or so goes my understanding.

They licensed the U3 engine specifically for their upcoming Marvel game.

Woot another game that will sell based only on fame and name alone, but will flop. Like MxO.. man Mxo had so much potential.

The UNreal engine looks insane, but then again, it seems unreal makes better engines then games, their engines always seem to be what games dev seek out.

I'd have to disagree. I think Unreal games are actually pretty good. The Mods for them aren't. The menus and just over all performance of mods is just bad. I don't know if it is actually because of the unreal engine or just the modding community for Unreal isn't up to par with say the Half-life modding community.

they got the rights there but the way they used it was bad, i think they could have done better with the engine, although i think the closed beta was in unreal engine 2
