Guild Wars for the Non-Voice IP Player

Beatnik59Beatnik59 Member UncommonPosts: 2,413

Hello.

Would you recommend this game to someone who uses text chat only?

Are there major portions of the game that are inaccessable to someone who uses text chat only?

I would still recommend it to you. Voice chat is not required anywhere. It is a crutch for those that can't type fast and fight at the same time, which includes most of the audience. Also, it is easier to coordinate PvP attacks when you can talk over voice chat. Therefore, many hardcore PvPer guilds will require you to use voicechat. You may even change your tune on voice chat once you see how difficult PvP can be without it or how much better it can be with it. None of the game is restricted from you by not using voicechat.

6 characters at level 20...never used voice chat once. EDIT: Actually it's 8 I've had at 20, with 2 deleted :(

For PvE, it would be more annoying than useful (just look at DDO)

Now, PvP on the other hand...different story.

Yeah, I agree with them. For high level PvP, you almost need Voice Chat, and it doesn't really hurt if you've got some good guys in a REALLY tough PvE area. But, for low level PvP and virtually all PvE there's no need for Voice Chat.

VoiP is not 'nessescary,' it just gives you an edge in PvP. In some PvE you need it. Small farming teams will need to communicate better to ensure survival, and VoiP is the easiest way to talk to others (aside from actually being in the same roo mas them, but we cant exactly round up players in an internet cafe on a whim)

If you ever want to play any spike builds  you will be REQUIRED to have ts or vent, same goes for alot of high level HA and GvG teams. You don't need it for low level PvP or any PvE but if you want to be a serious contender in PvP it is usually an asset.

lets put it this way if a PvP group was going into HoH asked me to join the first question I ask is, what the TS server address, if the answer is anything but, the TS server IP is....., then I will not join the group.

I have my own privately Hosted TS server as a backup

I would agree with those above that for the higher end PvP its almost essential, however there are plenty of  PvP opportunities that exist that don't require it.

Random Arenas, the RP based PvP Areas (like Aspenwood) and the Alliance battles maps can all be played successfully without it.  I dont tend to use TS/Vent in these areas as I have PC in our lounge so when my girlfriend is watching Eastenders it gets a bit annoying for her to have me jabbering away to seemingly no-one hehe.

It gets difficult without it when you have specific plans to follow that require timing and teamwork, however...

    Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance

I have been in guild teams where we use code instead for non TSers.  We have small easily typable words like

"  qwe  "  (your fingers are already on the keys for running so press enter and those 3 keys is easy)

..for use with planned attacks.  This is by no means as good, verbal comms will always beat typing (except where you have people with very different accents or indeed languages) but sometimes you have to go with what you got not what you wish you had.

I agree with most people here, for a good PvP or GvG battle its best to have a Voice Chat option.  But for various reasons you can't use voice chat or you don't have it, then a pretty good advice I can give is

    1.  When you start out your first PvP battles, get to know each of the maps rather then trying to win.

    2. try to get a fairly good team that has at least 1 good healer, a strong defense char for taking most of the brute attacks, and maybe something like an Elementalist who can do a fair amount of damage to a group, or a Mesmer who can drain or inhabit the skill of an opponent, or necromancer who can train the life points, what I am trying to say is get a team that is appropriate for the situations/opponents that you would most likely encounter.

    3. Never RUSH the battles, stay with your team and make sure everyone knows what they are doing.  A divided team will hardly ever win against a united team.  I am not talking about staying as a group here.  Sometimes (normal PvPs are 4 vs 4) so while 3 of your members are distracting the 4 opponents, the remaining 1 could perhaps go and accomplish what ever objective that needs to be done (if any).

    4. I always helps if you and your team have a plan of attack prepared before hand.  So that everyone will know what they should do without having to waste precious time to type and ask questions on the spot (giving the enemy time to slaughter you).

    5. And most of all, make sure you know what the strong and weak points of your profession are and choose the skills wisely.
