And what, may I ask...is so wrong about wanting to feel like you've acomplished something? What is wrong about wanting to feel a little special, or wanting to be set apart from people that really don't care all that much because you busted your ass to be the best that you can be?
I mean, by your definitions here, Capitalistic societies shouldn't work because everyone isn't on the same page. The point is...every player has the opportunity to go that extra mile and be recognized for it....not everyone wants to, and that is their peragative.

So like... I don't have any right to feel proud of myself for maintaing a 40 hour a week job when my friend cann't hold down a part time job?
I mean, jeeze... Many people in the MMO community do take games seriously...just like some people take sports seriously, some people take their favorite TV shows seriously. They are called hobbies, people are proud of them, people love them, and people get excited about them. I'm sure you'd agree that it is human to take pride in something you've accomplished above others. I mean, bowling trophys mean about as much as a decked out Max Level Character in an MMO. They aren't worth anything (except on IGE), but it is what they represent that matters...to that person that owns it. It represents skill, hard work, and achievement.
If you've never taken pride in your accomplishments, if you have any accomplishments, then I do pity you.
