Looking to piece together a new system and would like to keep it below a grand.
Don't need a monitor, keyboard, mouse, vid card, speakers, etc.

Don't need:Vid card, Speakers, Monitor, Keys, Mouse, Joystick or Gamepad, Printer, Scanner.
Basically Im looking for more power. I use my system for Gaming(obviously) and Media. I checked out iBuypower. I have only had Intel as well. Are there more advantages to AMD units as opposed to Intel systems?
My current system is a Gateway. Some specs are:
Nvidia 5600 Vid card, 300 watt power, 576 sd-ram, pIII 1.0 ghz, 40 mb HD 5600.

I would go P4 3.0Ghz (don't pay the surplus for 3.2) then just a good motherboard...like GigaByte, Soyo or SuperMicro. Then pick up some PC3200 memory (1GB at least). So something like this:
1 motherboard: ~$120
1 P4 processor: ~$230
2 PC3200 512MB modules: ~$150
If I were you I would also pick a motherboard that will support new SATA (serial ATA) hard drives. Then you might want to ensure it has RAID 0/1 support. Using RAID0 will give you read/write boosts and RAID1 will give you read boosts with data safety (at the expense of 50% of your storage space). SATA drives are nearly as fast as SCSI, but affordable. So you might spend $40 more for a motherboard that supports this, and $300 or so on a pair of SATA drives (120-160GB)

Ya, also be weary of the AMD "64 bit" thing right now. Albeit that is a fast processor - it is only fast when running 64 bit software on a 64 bit operating system. Windows XP Pro is a 32bit OS and all games are written in 32 bit architecture...so you won't get to reap the benefits until something like Windows "Longhorn" comes about...
