Greetings over with, I'd like to move onto the reason for this post. I was wondering, how many SWG players here were originally enticed to play due to its branding and hype? Please, be honest. I'm trying to make my own decision about whether to try this game or not. image

Many thanks. image

I really don't care too much about the hype for the game, and I'm also mostly indifferent to the specific setting. (the Star Wars universe) Star Wars is probably third or fourth on the list of sci-fi universes that I care to watch or read about. (#1 being Babylon 5)

My girlfriend is a Star Wars fan, much more so than myself.. so we sort of decided to try SWG together. It's alright.. but it'll never live up to the hype that many built it up to in their own heads.

I played SWG for the Star Wars name. I'm a big fan of the movies and wanted to play in the SW universe.

FYI: I'm not playing SWG anymore for multiple reasons.

This can be said about every single MMORPG that has ever been released.

    Some things about SWG:

     - The target audiance is Star Wars fans who have never played a MMORPG before. It was never intended for "ex EQ players", power gamers, hardcore gamers, l00t d00ds....

     - It is the 2nd most popular worldwide international MMORPG, with over 300,000 accounts.

     - It is nothing like it was in Beta. And only players who have played it within the last month (as of December 2003) are in position to comment on it. SWG has changed, and keeps changing that much.

     - It comes with a free 1 month trial. Find out for yourself if it suites your own personal playstyle. If you don't like it, exchange the game for store credits, or for another game (RPG, console, etc...) from the store you purchased it from.

Okay, guaranteed. I love the idea of being a character in the Star Wars universe, even if the timeline does surge off at a tangent and the official timeline will never display the results of SWG players' actions. I'm hooked on the idea. image

From a development viewpoint, I expect the game has advanced leaps and bounds from the release days. It has had its chance to do so, and the developers wouldn't sit on their backsides and do nothing for fear of losing a large majority of account holders who expect a great deal of bang for their buck. image

I'm extremely tempted to try it out. So tempted, in fact, that I could head down to the store today and buy it off the shelf. Of course, it's not that simple. The catch is such that, once I purchase the game and I try it out and don't like it, the store will not give me a thing for trading it back in. They never do that with any online games due to the use of CD Keys for account registrations. image It makes sense, but I need to be careful how I spend my money. Of course, the other minor catch is that I don't have a credit card. That can be fixed. image

Thanks for all the advice. image

I am sorry to mention that the game has not grown by leaps and bounds since release.  Heck, Id be safe to say over half of us left the game because the game got crappier since release.  The list of things they screwed up on were just too numeorus.

Plus, there are not 300,000 subscribers.  X seems to be the only one who seems to beleive this.  Log on the game and every server and then let us know if you can even find 10% of that amount.

It's 50 bucks still, so choose this game wisely

We've been over this too many times already. You can believe what you want. If you want to believe LucasArts is lying so be it. If you want to believe SONY is lying so be it. If you want to believe the major media outlets, and major press are all lying, believe what you want.

And again, for the upteeth time, not everyone can, nor will, or has ever, ALL logged into the game at the EXACT SAME time. Players are in different time zones, working, at school, going to the movies, etc...

SWG has recently ADDED MORE SERVERS... now why is that?

What game stores are near you?

Is there a GameSpot store? Or a CompUSA store? Any of those two in the state (or country?) you live in?

Hopefully En1gma's edited/amended version of my quote didn't mislead you into thinking it reflected my views. I want to make that clear, if it wasn't already. If it was clear already, then disregard this defence! image

I don't have either store near me. I'm unsure if they operate in my country of residence - the United Kingdom. Some local stores, which sell computer and video games, are GAME (formerly Electronics Boutique), HMV, Virgin, Curry's, Dixon's, Toys 'R' Us. I know GAME shelve it because I noticed more copies on the shelves at its release than any other MMORPG at their releases.

I'm going to try EVE Online first, as it's cheaper. When I have more of a disposable income, I'll think again about trying Star Wars Galaxies. One doesn't know unless one tries! image

    lol, no irritation needed.

You may be able to get SWG online at gamestop for England? Maybe?

With EVE, you'll either love it or hate.  it all depends on your tastes.  I, personally, like it...but I know many others who dont.

Ahhhhhhh the decisions of mmorpgs lol...no two are perfect image

2 days ago a good friend of mine was showing me EvE as he played it on his 2.0 GHZ laptop. The game is incredible! Reminds me of Freelancer in too many ways! Freelancer mixed with TDZK, Space Privateer, and a bit of Edge of Chaos.

IF the SWG space expansion is anything like EvE then SWG will be the best ever Sci-Fi MMORPG ever!

I'm even thinking of taking over my friend's EvE account 1 month from now heheh. He has 3 incredible specialized ships as gifts from his corporation.

It's cool that you don't want to let things get out of hand in this thread. image

EvE is a space only MMORPG. In many ways it is the same or simular to Earth & Beyond, and even Freelancer (which is more of a Diablo 2 type online game. At most 20 to 200 players can be on each server. So Freelancer is not a true-blue MMORPG.)

When the SE (Space Expansion) for SWG comes out, roughly 6 months to 1 year from now, it will be as it was 100% intended to be. It will also be Star Wars. Right now, no matter how good it is, SWG is only 50% "Star Wars" without any spaceships.

I recommend EvE, ever since I saw a friend of mine show it to me as he played it on his laptop. I think he said it's roughly $12.oo per month to play. (USA dollars. But hey, the British pound is worth more than the worthless American dollar heheh. image )

Just be super-careful of the player pirates LOLOL!
