Are people playing Aion? That game was insanely grindy in original release. EXP grind and gear plus up was insanely tedious and grindy.

hmmm I remember being part of those discussions. For people who came from World of Warcraft it was very grindy and long leveling. I came fro Lineage 2, NC Soft's other pvp game, and I though it was a breeze.

I actually attended the launch party in Seattle and met the lead designer.

I loaded up Aion recently, I like the game but I'm not clear I want to pay the sub for classic. Hmmmm something to think on.

I have a lvl 39 sm in aion classic. But everytime I feel like playing it again I see the "seasonal pass" and the many many gacha roulettes and that instantly kills any desire to play classic.

The sad part is private servers provide a more authentic classic experience than Gameforge/NcSoft!!!

Seasonal pass, seasons, gacha, gambling as gameplay are why so many players are turning of from live service. LS became the golden goose and every couple of years a studio would come up with a new way to squeeze money from players. Which would then post haste spread to every other studio out there.

Gaming has reached the point where enough players are finally saying "this paywall is too high to jump", but it has taken a couple of decades to get here!

I love how divorced from reality posts like this is.

Genshin Impact made $100 million in just January 2025 on only mobile.

Seems like people are not turning their backs on season passes and gacha just yet. But, go ahead and believe whatever you want. It's your fantasy.

But we can counter one success with many LS games that have crashed. Gaming is so diversified and varied now, players can find what they want. I think thats the point. For me LS is not about cost but being forced to play the way the LS wants you too. Look at new World - the new season is dominated by PVP and so is the ways you earn seasonal XP. I don't PVP so I don't play. Same is true with D34. Seasonal content was not something I enjoyed. I think @Scot post is accurate that many gamers are abandoning live service because they have seen it for what it is. Sure it may be successful for some games and that's great but for many, live service is something be avoided. The different is how much the game appeals to you.

Xiaoki always take a very "industry" line, I have posted with him before about this and pointed out that gaming media journalists have talked about this themselves.

Sure a new LS with a really big splash can pick up new players but the days when nearly every LS game would grab a decent player base are gone. Too many players are being conservative about sticking to their current LS games. I also think there is an east/west divide here, I think this affects less players in the east which is where if you remember LS became a phenomenon.

So, your rebuttal is ...not every Live Service game is a success?

Wow, amazingly astute. Surely, you are the genius of our times.

Not every single player game is a success either. Whaaaaat?! How can this be?

Video games of all types fail for whatever reason. Did Dragon Age: Veilguard fail because of people rejecting Live Service monetization? No, I dont think it did.

But, none of the above changes the fact that the most successful games of recent times are Live Service games.

But that is changing for new LS games and you seem to have your head in the sand about that. It also depends on what you mean by a success, if you mean monetary return then yes, but that does not mean the live service "genre" is healthy. Look at any gaming genre it is how the new games are doing that shows how healthy the genre is not how the old ones are doing, that would be like saying MMORPG's as a genre are doing well because WoW is still making loads of money.
