I played SWG Pre-CU. One character I had on the server ran alot of quests, 17,000 credits worth. My first character was a Wookie named Choobacca. Original, I know! LOL The game was a slog to me. I got bored and gave my account to a friend.

Pre-CU SWG is still my greatest gaming experience to date but it was terribly broken from jump.
Still surpassed a lot of what is being made today in a lot of ways but it never, as an entity, could get out of it's own way enough to succeed. It did not help that it was managed by SOE.
It deserved the death it got, even it if killed me as well at the time. I'm sure my posts from 20-ish years ago will attest to that lol.
I've been to the EMU but until they get it to the point where there won't be any more server wipes it's a moot point. Only so many times the resource gatherers and crafters are gonna build that economy from scratch knowing the reset button is looming. Even if that were to happen, it now feels extremely dated and I wonder if it could hold my attention once the nostalgia wore off.
Great experience from the most broken ass game.
RIP to the 3-legged GOAT of MMOs

I really hope that *insert game name here* will be the first game to ever live up to all of its pre-release promises, maintain a manageable hype level and have a clean release. Just don't expect me to hold my breath.

Since there's a few SWG Emu's which one's been doing wipes. It's not Legends I know.
The main SWGEmu, the primary developers.
As far as im aware, it's their code that sits as the backbone for nearly all other emulators. They've been working their asses off on getting the full SWG game to what they call 1.0 - which is based on SWG patch 14.1 (pre-cu) and will include Jump to Lightspeed.
They've had 2 big wipes that im aware of.
First long time server was called Liberator (or, at least it was the first server I tried). Then, when they'd made enough progress on the code, they wiped it and launched their second server.
The second was called Basilisk and was a much more complete version of pre-cu. But, it's also a server where they started experimenting more, testing ideas etc. For example, I believe you could have unlimited characters (which undermined inter-dependency), and there was some sort of new item (ATK? summit like that) which prevented items degrading (which really hurt the economy).
The SWGEmu devs are now on the final stretch, homing in on 1.0. So, they wiped Bas, and launched "Finaliser". The idea being that the code is as close to possible for their 1.0 release, the bugs we find are almost certainly related to core code and not experimental stuff that they've added.
But once 1.0 is ready, complete with JTL, they're gonna wipe Finaliser.
At this point, it's unclear whether the SWGEmu team are actually gonna run a proper 1.0 server themselves. Some of those devs have been working on the emulator for 10+ years, they're tired and a little bit bored. So, they may simply release the code and let others run the servers.
I think some of the devs also have competing ideas on what they want to do with SWG in the future. They've been held together by a concrete goal of replicating patch 14.1, but once that goal has been achieved, they'll have much more creative freedom. Some just wanna design new content. Some want jedi, some dont. Some want to rebalance the professions, add new ones, others want to stay true to 14.1
It remains to be seen what's gonna happen next, or how close we are to that next phase. We're awaiting a video from the devs to shed some light on what's next, due soon.

Anyone member's when G4 TV and Julio Torres tried to insult the playerbase on tv but ended up just showcasing what a buggy PoS the NGE was? That was when I knew the end was near.
Hmm, I played SW Galaxies years ago and couldn't see what all the hype was about. I tried it last year on an emulated server, using the disk I'd bought at the time, and honestly I still wasn't impressed. I uninstalled the game once more, and the disk was flung into a drawer somewhere or other. I have no inclination to spend an hour watching the video. Never heard of Porter Robinson - I can only suppose he used to be somebody.
I looked up Porter Robinson just now, he really never was somebody.....
After SWG won the "Coaster of the Year" award from CGW I had no interest in giving the game a try as my tolerance for buggy messes is pretty low when playing online games.
I know you are old as dirt and all but did you use a 50 year old copy of encyclopedia Britannica too "look him up"? because he's a pretty well known EDM DJ and producer, even google will tell you that. I mean his music was literally in the first Forza Horizon game back in 2012. The song Raph speaks of has 68 million views on YT; How many views you got on your channel for old cat memes?

Don't forget the song for League of Legends in 2022.
Or, you know, the frickin' Grammy nomination.
I'm just glad that Amaranthar is impressed with Stars Reach.
Yep, and still impressed. And I haven't been around gaming for more than 2 months. So I have catching up to do, although I still don't have a lot of time yet. I'll tell ya, Raph, I'm still missing the modern UO that I always dreamed of. I appreciate your honesty on "who the game isn't for", and hope that some day in the future you'll apply what you've built to a UO type game. This won't stop me from buying Star's Reach, of course. That's sort of gaming history, isn't it?

You missed out if you never got to play Jump to Lightspeed...

SWG (pre-cu) - AoC (pre-f2p) - PotBS (pre-boarder) - DDO - LotRO (pre-f2p) - STO (pre-f2p) - GnH (beta tester) - SWTOR - Neverwinter
SWGemu was one of the 1st yes, but I wouldn't call them the primary developers, especially how they've fallen behind the other SWG projects.
Also with Legends being SWG-NGE and Restro being a mix of both I can't see their code coming from the SWGemu project.

You leave Mr Tiddles out of this.
