Sadly, twitch has become what you usually saw in SF movies where advertising was ..everywhere.

I mean I literally got ads on a stream which said 1 out of 7 ADS. Like what in the fuck?

And its not something rare. I often see 1 out 3 ads and some which goes for like 30-1 minute...each. Pf ..

No wonder they are going down. This..method of getting revenue is pathetic.

35% Layoff is pretty huge. They're not cutting fluff at that point, they're cutting people they actually need and are figuring out how to have someone else pick up the slack meaning they're basically working two jobs. It's times like that where you wonder who has it better, the people who are leaving or staying? People leaving get severance and can go find another job. People staying get to try and adjust to the increased workload. Not a great time for Twitch and I'd say they're on the ropes financially if they're making these cuts.

Or maybe just maybe- they have better workflows now and dont need a larger headcount? Dont forget they are owned by Amazon which were the first to build the Cloud tech (in the begging for internal use- before they saw a market potential- it went 7 years before Microsoft, Oracle and other companies could catch up) and were the ones who pionered online reveiws by users and customers (There are even more thigns but this is just from top of my mind). People forget how effective that company is.

In my eyes - this a normal thing. Espesially when you consider that Amazon is listed on the stock exchange.

Twitch has two major problems...too many effing ads... I hardly watch any twitch stream anymore due to this and I am not "paying" to be ad free.

Too much soft core simp porn allowed which is only there to funnel said simps to only fans...looks at amouranthe and such.... you cant really blame some of these girls tbh as she made like 57million gross on OF in 2023....

Gamers are watching players playing instead of gaming themselves, that's just daft. If you are learning from a tutorial I understand but this made TV couch potato's out of gamers, bizarre.

It is not going anywhere though, just cutting down and I will still have to the opportunity to express my amazement at players finding this interesting in the years to come. :)

Youtube actually has tons of good content and amazing content creators that actually create good content.
So I am actually paying for Youtube Premium family, as my son watches a lot of youtube too.

Twitch is just a waste of space. Like others have said. It's just plastered with ridiculous ads and pushing Amazon Prime. Then you have all those twerking girls on there, pushing OF.  It's a sad joke.

If you want to watch some good streamers playing games, you got much better content on Youtube. There are plenty of excellent channels like Cohh, TheRadBrad, etc.

You can still block ads it just doesnt work with some ad blockers like AdBlockerPlus which is becoming more n more crappy.

My son and I still watch youtube and dont see ads, my boy got a warnign once or twice untill I turned ABP off.  Youtube is losing the war against ads blockers as they will just adapt.

Dunno but kind of feel like it time for something to come along to replace both twitch AND youtube.

"As you all know, we have worked hard over the last year to run our business as sustainably as possible," wrote Twitch CEO Dan Clancy in a blog post. "Unfortunately, we still have work to do to rightsize our company, and I regret having to share that we are taking the painful step of reducing our headcount by just over 500 people across Twitch."

The layoffs come during concerns over losses at the company. Several Twitch executives have also left the company over the past several months, reports Bloomberg.

Doesn't exactly sound like better workflows to me, but hey keep drinking the Kool aid.

I think people are forgetting that Twitch had to layoff 400 people in March last year.

That's 900 jobs in less than a year.

Twitch revenue has been on a steady decline for years. Down from $101 million in Q1 2021 to just under $30 million in Q2 2023.

Twitch exploded because of people staying at home during Covid and their answer to recoup when people went to their real lives was heavy handed ads.

Just a continuation of the trimming of the tech industry.  I think it's gonna continue for a while.  I also see a lot of layoffs in other industries.  I think the economy is headed for a bit of a correction.  The Feds increased interest rates for a very long time.  It takes time for the economy to catch up to it.  Hopefully not, but just a feeling I have.

You think I am subscribed to Youtube Premium just to watch Cohh and TheRadBrad? lol.

For me its astronomy (science in general), miniature painting, hiking, photography and channels like Gamers Nexus I watch a lot.

It's fine you don't care about such things.... but for me it's worth subscribing and watching all that excellent content ad free.

I mostly use it to watch developer announcements for upcoming updates. I think some enjoy watching streams as there is a social element to many of them, between those in chat and sometimes with the streamer. That makes it a a bit less passive than television.

For tutorials, I usually look for those on YouTube as I think those are better suited to that platform. Twitch would be useful for asking questions on the fly based on active play if the streamer was inclined to answer such.

Thing is though. Times have changed and a lot of streamers have moved away from Twitch already and stream on Youtube instead these days.

A lot of the developer announcements these days. Same deal. They either stream on multiple platforms (Twitch, Youtube, Twitter(X), etc)  or YouTube only (like Nintendo and TPC for example).

Either way. A lot of the more popular Streamers use both platforms to stream and upload videos. Often they stream live on Twitch and then directly opload the video to their Youtube channel afterwards.
Some of them even started spreading their live streams between Youtube and Twitch.

Are there costs associated with streaming to any of these platforms? Also when you mentioned Nintendo and TPC are these officially recognized streamers or something, what stops them streaming through the other services? Shows you how little I know about this area, to me you are making it sound like they get a license to stream for a platform!

I don't think there are any costs associated with live streaming on Twitch and Youtube?
Isn't the whole business model for Twitch and Youtube revolved around Ad revenue?
Plus on Twich, Amazon is also using it to push Prime membership.

When it comes to Nintendo and TPC (The Pokemon Company), that was in response to developer address.  Nintendo Direct's are streaming/posted directly on Youtube.
Same with official XBOX Live showcases/streams for example. I always watch these on Youtube.
There are plenty other examples, but the last couple years, I watched every major developer stream live on youtube (Square Enix, Sony, CPDR, etc, etc).

I haven't logged into Twitch for over a year now. I only used it now and then back in the day for some Twitch drops and that's it.

I don't watch Critical Role for instance on Twitch. I prefer watching them on youtube. Their format the twitch format isn't good in my opinion. Even when I was playing Undecember I never liked watching videos on Twitch. People just don't edit them well because it is live streamed so it becomes a slog to watch. I prefer watching edited stuff on youtube on builds and such.

The reason I even bothered to watch Twitch for Undecember was because there was a dearth of videos on builds on youtube. So you had to slog through a 2 hour video of some guy trying a build to see what he slotted them with or how he used the skills. It was a nightmare but for some builds I did do it. Like Ogre Arrow which was  quite well done by this guy but his vids were like 4 hours long that I used to skip through to find the relevant parts. I would not voluntarily use Twitch to be perfectly honest. Sucky format.
