I've never really played any of their games, maybe the original Farcry, but going forward I wouldn't consider buying anything from them no matter even if they were contracted to make EVE 2.

That's really shitty policy. I can understand losing access to some stuff eventually when the services are shut down, but once I buy a game it should be mine for as long as the service is online, no strings attached.
Is this a consumer data protection move? Along the lines of not keeping data on people who want to be forgotten.
If that were the case, wouldn't it be more standard across companies? That said, I'm under the impression the "right to be forgotten" is an on-request thing and I wouldn't generally expect a company to go beyond what they might be legally obligated to unless it benefited them.
In this case, it just sounds like a stick to keep users logging in periodically so that they can show higher user engagement to share holders (or something equally cynical).

Pretty sure this isn't legal in the US either, not just France. Expect lawsuits to happen when they pull this move.
Ubisoft aren't the only ones. Google is also doing this and their requirement is apparently stiffer. You have to use your account "enough". Just logging into email or youtube once in a period of time isn't enough and they don't specify what the limit is exactly. Paying YouTube and Google premium customers are exempt.
Fortunately, I don't buy my games from Ubisoft directly. I buy them from Steam, Microsoft, and Sony and I doubt they are interested in hopping on the lawsuit bandwagon, so Ubi can do whatever they want until someone buys up their assets after they file.
The only video I watched on this said it had to be dormant for 4 years.
Oh, that's so unfair. To be "perfectly" fair, lets check how long a person might live and then deduct the first some years that they were too young to play games.
Jeanne Louise Calment of France lived to be 122 years and 164 days old (Guinness World Records). Lets round that up to be safe, and call it 123 years. Now, I am guessing here, but I'd say that 5 year olds could start playing games, as they are, so lets deduct that and come up with a 118 year period of possible gaming.
That means that a fair system wouldn't cancel a buyer out for those 118 years.
They are quickly becoming the new EA. This will make me seriously rethink any future purchases.
Interesting comment (that we all know by now, I suspect):
"While Ubisoft rarely releases titles that have been regarded as outright failures, the by-the-numbers style of gameplay in many of its releases has worn out its welcome for many players. This player fatigue is especially pronounced when it comes to the publisher’s open-world titles, with many gamers decrying Ubisoft’s frequent reliance on a formulaic gameplay loop of climbing towers and clearing checkpoints. In response to these criticisms, upcoming Ubisoft games like the Assassin’s Creed Mirage appear to be removing or toning down some of these features."
I remember a similar thing with Balder's Gate I and II, so many years ago.
They said this years ago too. And its inactive accounts with no games.

UPDATE 7/24: Ubisoft has since clarified that it will only delete inactive accounts that do not have any game purchases tied to them.
Good to know. Although I don't trust Ubisoft's claim, seeing as if this were their intention this fact would have also been mentioned on the e-mail sent and not needed any "clarification". But regardless, good to know they have to find a new way to screw players. now. lol
While I wouldn't dismiss your concern, I do want to mention that this has come up a few times over the years. Its a long running policy that they have had. I think the last time people went crazy over this policy was around 2020/2021. They were deleting accounts that were created to use their forums and had no purchases. These accounts were inactive for a year or more, and again, had no ties to purchased content at all. Around that same time a guy that actually had purchased games had his account deleted as well. UBI admitted the mistake and returned everything. I read they also gifted a few things for their mistake too lol. The dude did have to argue though. Which is frankly BS. They had initially said "there is no way for us to return your purchases". I don't recall any details outside of that.
Prior to that, I think it came up again somewhere in 2015-2017.
Im the outlier here, but I actually like Ubi games and have never had an issue. The games I choose to play have a ton of content and never required me to purchase any DLC (I never purchased any either lol). I don't complete a lot of games, but I guess I just meld well with theirs. In the last few years I've completed AC Odyssey, AC Valhalla, Ghost Recon Wildlands, The Division (kinda, its a GAAS game), The Division 2 (again, kinda, same as prior). I enjoyed a bit of Ghost Recon Breakpoint, but didn't complete it. If we go back further there are plenty more games I completed from them too. Im also someone who has never had any issues with their launcher. Ever. I know lots of others do. So yeah, I am not looking to hate. Been buying games off them for MANY years with no issues.
That sounds like just slightly anal database housekeeping after the clarification that they're only talking about accounts with no games.

I can see their point, if you haven't bought any games, or spent any money (is that true?), then we are not going to keep your free account database forever.
Especially if you haven't logged in for a long while.

Kind of an important wrinkle
Yes, but looks like a walk back in response to the initial outrage, else why wasn't it part of the initial announcement?
The outrage started from Ubisoft sending e-mail threatening to close an individual account. Then Ubisoft support gave owner of that advice account advice through Twitter, and that individual case was turned into a news story.
