I would say something negative...but then the FFXIV community would send some guys around.

If you won't do it, I will. FF14 is not a bad game, but it's so generic, mediocre and boring that I don't see what people like about it. I'm a huge anime fan, even went through a weeb phase in my teens and I still don't get the appeal of the game. I'm sick and tired of Vanilla WoW, but I'd go through Elwynn Forest and Westfall for the 6,823,4753,845th time again than force myself to play FF14.

I think its always going to come down to personal taste more than anything. I prefer ff14 to the ones you listed even though I am in the same camp in thinking it does a lot of things barebones (putting it nicely), like gear just being pure stats and nothing else like other mmorpgs at least try to do, with their excuse being its for balance purposes (even ff11 had better interesting gear....). This expansion has left alot to be desired though and judging by the official forums, I'm not alone in that thinking.

We are not saying FF14 is a bad game, just that's it's mediocre, it's not doing anything new, maybe some things better, but IMO a lot of things worse than Vanilla WoW. There is indeed a cult following around it, as well as another very mediocre game - Lost Ark. I don't want to insult people, but the cult members of both come across as not very bright and they can't even argue about it, they just insult anyone who doesn't agree with them that the object of their fandom is the best thing in existence.

Tbf, most of these titles have cult following, which as you say, aren't very bright in the grander scheme of things. The 14 community will defend the game's cash shop being updated monthly for example and write it off as 'optional' and 'just dont buy anything and it wont be a problem for you.' WoW retail is another where you arden defenders of dragonriding essentially replacing regular flight with the only 'acceptable' criticism (in the forum's minds) is that they want their dragons to be able to do it too (or other flying mounts). Classic is another one with an weird logic cult following, being against lfd but turning a blind eye to boosts (and the ways people can get around the 1 boost per account 'rule,' which is honestly contributed greatly to rmt sense tbcc).

Going back to 14, all I'll say is that what it does is consistent. Its always been a casual game with some 'hardcore' elements sprinkled here and there but can be easily ignored and doesn't try to be anything other than really a fanservice game. I really think at the end of the day, the people that keep playing 14 are really just FF fans first and not really there because they like the game. When you see certain things, like Eden from ff8 and exdeath/kefka/golbez/etc, ff nerds can't help but to geek out at what might be coming next.

FF14 boss fights are more spectacular and have better music than boss fights in other MMOs. The culmination of the story to these fights and then the fights themselves are thus more impactful and leave a greater impression on players than other MMOs. That's why I think a lot of FF14 rave about the game. The experience left a strong impression on them. The nostalgia for FF games also helps.

How many previously multi player dungeons and raids are made single player in this update?

FF14 is more like a single player RPG with an optional multi player mode now. But, it seems, that's what it's fan base wants.

Sure, its got better boss fights than probably anything out there. But then, mechanically speaking they are cluttered and overdone. Aoe (dont stand in the fire zones), invisible zones, many multi tier fights, whole arena damage.
I get trying to make everyone take incidental damage but half the time I either can't see where the damage comes from, or can't escape it anyway amidst the 8 thousand effects I need to dodge. For 10 minutes a fight.
It seriously needs better ui for all it has going on too. I can't fully keep track of all the stuff I need to do (especially with dailies) I've got 80+ in all crafting and gathering and I still don't know exactly about writs...

I am a Final Fantasy fan, and this game really appealed to me for a long time. Especially when they add nostalgic content. I saw monsters from previous Final Fantasy games, and raids with previous Final Fantasy themes.

The community was generally very good. Though finding a Free Company (clan) was not easy and I hopped through a few until I found one I liked (and was active as much as I was).

I also liked the story. I feel that End Walker would have been a total flop if not for Yoshi P.; because he didn't tolerate the pile of crap they gave him. Shadow Bringers was my favorite xpac, and I think it was their very best.

After a total of 2 years (and more) in the game, I finally burned out and I am not sure if I ever go back. If one thing FF14 suffers from, is generic and boring combat. Especially when they simplified it even more in Endwalker.
