So I read the article about time-gating, and I thought I could circumvent the problem with alts. So, I created 2 characters (one on 2 different servers) and I realized that all the free rewards are not account linked but char-linked.
For all altohololics like me, it is actually interesting.
Using all the free rewards, I got on 1 char 3 SR and 1 SSR (Zero + echo 2 stars). On the other I got 4 SR and 1 SSR. This second char has the SSR shield and the SR healing staff (that does not heal yet <- no star). If I am lucky enough, maybe I gonna have the ultimate support char at some point with shield/healing?
Overall and for now, I found the gacha aspect not too bad, if not a bit enjoyable.
The game itself for now really feels like Genshin for several reasons. Genshin is not a bad game but I got bored of it in 3 months. I wonder if the MMO features of this one will hold me any longer. The setting is a bit refreshing. I love medieval fantasy, but I am not against a break.
Some morons might see it as gating but normal peeps see it as ensuring that everyone is at the same leveling field and nobody is ahead of others because they have endless time and money.
It’s not pay to win its pay to be lazy. You’re not ahead of others power wise in PvP or PVE.

You're way wrong. You might be the same level but people paying are way stronger than you already.
Uh, so I made a character, and when I started the game, the appearance still was just the default white haired girl/guy. Do you get to make it look like the character you created later, or is that a pay feature?

You have to wait until after the tutorial for character creation
You trying to justify the gacha system is pretty funny. It's like you're saying "yeah these guys use this predatory unethical business model but it's less unethical than the other guys so hey you can feel good about supporting the game!"
I think I'll pass.
I don't see it as justification it seems more like an explanation. Seeing as how it was still called a predatory monetization system.
Gacha games with a pity system are better than gacha games without them. It doesn't make them monetization better than games with no loot boxes, but at least here you also get a currency when you roll so you can buy weapons you've already earned.
The monetization is no more predatory than the player allows.
After the initial wave of freebies is over it falls into the f2p norm. Advancement is eased and hastened through spending. Foregoing that makes progress a slow grind.
The cost of the game is dependent on how one feels about grind. Those that enjoy or at least don't mind it can play the game at a lower cost than those that insist on quick progress.
ToF accommodates play at a relaxed pace with their open world that rewards exploration while providing several means to go about it. That in itself will make the grind more appealing to some players.
But for those that want to advance quickly with no additional monetary cost f2p games are generally a bad choice regardless, with few exceptions. As such, those that want that shouldn't play them save for those exceptions.
For the one millionth time: we know, and we literally dislike how these monetization scheme have affected these games, including the grind. That's the entire point.
Uh, so I made a character, and when I started the game, the appearance still was just the default white haired girl/guy. Do you get to make it look like the character you created later, or is that a pay feature?
You need to wait to speak to celine(? or whatever npc) that allow you to select your custom pre-made appearance.
Every gacha game is pay to win, the only question is the degree of pay to win. Tower of Fantasy seems better than some (cough, Genshit, cough), but worse than others, but I haven't played it, nor do I intend to. Mind you, the main thing isn't what it's like at the start, but what it's like at the end game period. Mobile games especially tend to try really hard to be really generous early on, only to then barely drip feed the rewards at end game.
Then you have to remember that the very things provided in a gacha, are the things you need to play the game well, with often little, to no means of getting them outside of the gacha. Sure they will throw some "free" pulls out to players, but those are no different from the free samples of cash shop items free to play games would provide people from the early days of free to play games. They're just meant to get people hooked on said pay benefits, so they may be more likely to then spend money to continue getting said pay benefit.
Half the review telling us about needless time gating and half talking about the monetisation and how its "Bad but not the worst".
Review is all over the place, I have no idea from reading this how the game plays, what the characters feel like to play, what the "lots of side activities" actually are.
Honestly this review reads like some one had about 30 minutes with the game and had to get a word count in.
Come on please, we dont come to these sites for trash articles like this.
There's definitely better games to play if one's goal is to experience challenge and difficulty. Just turning to the rogue/roguelite genre offers a more direct use of randomization to present challenge to a player.
I'm a little confused by the "WTF"s to this.
Fact is the difficulty of gacha games is designed to scale in relation to financial investment. Pay more money, make easier game through gambling for better rewards.
The randomization only exists in this case to create a window for extra money to be extracted from the consumer.
Challenge of a game like a roguelike/roguelite, in contrast, is bound to randomization that is entirely insular. It's not generated through external pressure to pay more, it's at the behest of the game to present you with both easier or harder challenges.
Do the people that tagged WTF honestly believe paying money to gamble for an affect on challenge is the better option?

This was a review in progress. If you read the article you'd see they linked the preview before that, and there will be a final review score.
I guess you read it but didn't understand it.
Right now the game is good to a point, but a mess.

I'd say... yes? If you count maxing out the SSR characters winning? But you can max out the SR characters without spending any money in like.. 2 or 3 days just by playing.
It's really weird actually. Most of the time you'd expect more lower tier characters and fewer high tier but this time they have only a few SR characters, and they are all pretty good. A maxed out low tier character will out perform a 0 or 1 or in some cases a 2 star high tier character in a lot of cases.
Also, SR characters are still really good, and you will do just fine doing all of the content with SR if you get unlucky with not getting any SSR. That said, there is an abundance of opportunities to pull them without spending any money at all.
u ger 3 for free 80 gold pulls thats 2 100% guarenteed , and 1 from the box
more if u are lucky on your pulls
with the basic currency (lets call it primo 2.0 ) u can buy red crystals to roll for the other banner too .
u get tons of gold orbs while exploring the issue is once u are done with that....what?

yeah when i do any group content some1 is doing like 50% + of the dmg lol
im half support and my SSR dps is tsubasa (bow) and bow in this game are kinda meh.

Did you look at the cash shop? It's quite clear you can spend money to advance more quickly than those that choose not to. Advancing faster provides comparative advantage, especially in PvP.

Actually, I've heard that the gating in the storyline is based on the account itself, not server-side. If you make a new account right now, you will be capped at 24 in the story basically being behind everyone else that started, say, yesterday.

Quite possibly. Fortunately there is plenty to do when the story is time gated so it's still possible to play and be rewarded in the meantime for those that don't want to take a break until it opens up again.
i played it 16hours now and i dont feel the p2w aspect for now...
i'm a casual player so i dont mind to be a "winner" as long i got fun and stuff to do and after genshin impact that i stopped cause i feel turn in round, it's a fresh moment for me to play TOF.
maybe it playes better with a controller, or on a high end phone, but with mouse and keyboard it sucks.
How's that?
It is very responsive on PC. Controlling camera is (for me) easier with a mouse than with a controller or by touch (phone). Since it is a "phone" game first, the number of inputs is limited and is not more than your average PC MOBA.

I really do not see how controls suck here?
Control is quite personal.
I play ESO with a gaming mouse and keyboard. For some reason the game refused to recognize the side buttons on my mouse for an extended period after the High Isle update. I found the game quite difficult to play with a controller, despite that many can do so with no trouble at all.
While I haven't personally found mouse and keyboard problematic in ToF I can see how someone may.
In my very limited playtime so far, the amount of stats/damage on weapons of varying varity of the same levels seems incredibly high (i.e., a lvl 10 R weapon vs. a lvl 10 SSR weapon). I can't tell if that was partly because they were different weapon types (a spear vs. guns), but the SSR guns at the same level seemed incredibly stronger stat-wise.
I recognize that isn't necessarily unusual in gacha games, but gives me the ability to easily pass on this type of game. I won't allow myself to get invested in games where my ability to earn "strong" equipment is controlled by gacha RNG. It isn't even about being top ranked or competitive in PvP, etc. - it means the power scale can always be changed and will be at the whim of not just current gacha draws, but future ones as well.
The mobile client is absolutely terrible btw, it lacks precision and is only useful in higher momentum use. The PC client is pretty good overall, although when using a controller there seems to be some functions not mapped to a normal Xbox style controller that required the use of the keyboard/mouse.
