Played the game from an early beta until summer 2008 when I stopped. Didn't care for the direction they were headed and haven't been back since. Glad they are still going though.

I love difficult games. Path of Exile and Escape from Tarkov are among my favorites lately. But those games I listed have designs that sort of naturally lend to teaching you about the game so your brain power is spent being guided on how to think for yourself and improve. EVE on the otherhand is so freaking boring. The game in many regards doesnt teach you anything but the most worthless basics or put you in a position where you naturally learn. The community knows it too, they setup “training guilds or colleges to teach new players” but those too just feel like a job instead of fun. Ole spreadsheets online probably is an incredible game if you have been playing it since the beginning, but for most everyone else I have met including my opinion, the game is an absolute mind numbing slog.

Path of Exiles never seemed to be much of a challenge, new league comes out, players just look up the latest FOTM build, play up to level 94 or 95, rinse and repeat.
Sure, you can put it on death match mode I suppose, but I could also just self delete my character if I died in any other game, actually met a gamer once who always did that, single player, or otherwise.
EVE is an acquired taste and it's pacing isn't for everyone.
I feel it's much like a real world Navy, some folks want to pilot the fast attack boats while others want to be Captain of the Aircraft carrier.

Amazing game, almost 20 years of a good story. Yet CCP is trying very hard to mess it all up every year and it's sad to say they are on a good way to make EVE a thing of the past.
They had an entire universe in the palm of their hand, a true multiverse base but instead of building on it they wasted tons of cash on crap spinoffs that never picked up and in the end they sold their dreams to a company from China. The reason why I don't play EVE is is CCP.
No fate but what we make, so make me a ham sandwich please.
This should come with a "Paid Article" tag or something because no one who actually has time spent in EvE think's it's in a good position , it's literally shedding players by the minute.
It's one of those things that you can't really explain why it is successful....They caught lightning in a bottle....The timing was perfect for that kind of game....It was extremely niche......What impressed me was people would actually have 4-5 accounts with a sub.
Also there is just something about sci-fi...I look at things like Star Wars and Star Trek and see how fanatical people are about them.....Look at Star Citizen....Not even really a game and it is acquiring record amounts of money being donated to it.
"EVE Online: Why So Many MMOs Try To Replicate Its Success"
Which ones? For the sake of completeness, it would have been good to cite a few examples.
This is what I was trying to find out.
Obviously all MMORPGs aim for success, but I can't think of any that are trying to achieve success in the same way as EvE. I don't even really know what that means!

Regardless of what you think about its current state, EVE has been successful throughout the WoW era, something many other MMOs failed to do. And it's done it in a niche genre (sci-fi), niche PvP focus, with sub-par graphics and weird cockpit only gameplay.
EVE has basically defied the odds and been successful because it blazed its own path instead of trying to duplicate the WoW formula. Maybe the title should be "why so many MMOs FAIL to replicate it's success." I don't know the exact number but I bet given a couple of hours I could produce a long list of MMOs that fared way worse than EVE has.

While not stated in the article I can recall more than a few indie MMORPGS claiming to be inspired by EVE including Crowfall, Ashes, and I even think the folks at Fractured perhaps.
Sometimes they are referring to an off line skill training option, or not providing a more wide open sandbox like environment.
I only recall one MMO, some sort of Mech like game which copied EVE very closely, right down to it's crappy UI menus.
Just as many games say they are the next coming of UO, EVE has some who reference it in their design talks, but few, if any, not even CCP are trying to replicate EVE in any close fashion.

Ignore the reddit haters, for the game has been "dying for 2 decades" , the game is still amazing to play and there is nothing on the market that even comes close to it.
I've been playing Eve since 2004, i recently unsubbed, just got tired of having my sub increased to pay for the alpha players, far as i am concerned the alpha f2p model is a failure, one i will not be continuing to fund.

The best example is probably Albion Online. Albion has taken the best parts of eve, put them in a fantasy setting with a hefty dose of MOBA combat mechanics.
It has a tight, more clean gameplay loop than EVE, while still retaining the full loot PvP, risk/reward balance, integrated economy and single shard nature of EVE.
It was very rough when it came out in 2017, but the publishers have polished it ever since.
Albion at this point is the best designed, not only mmo, but game out there in IMHO.
Now, I am not saying it is the BEST game out there, not even the most FUN game, but the mechanics of it are hands down the best game design I have ever seen.
If you are familliar with board game jargon, I would call it the euro game of MMOs.

He cant lol, there are none.
(Oh the COUNTLESS articles and comments I’ve read retreading the same points over and over in defense of Eve)
Is this a weak attempt at satire or parody?
