That sloppy gun play has you hyped? LOL...k, it looks like a less cartoony No Mans Sky so far.

Indeed, I think some people are going to end up disappointed.

Have....  Have you ever played a Bethesda game?

They were never known for Bungie-quality gunplay.  The Laser Musket, in particular, was clunky as hell to use in combat.  And that was Fallout 4.

I expect a Bethesda game in space, hopefully with all the lessons learned from previous titles and experience with that engine.   When those games are good, they're *really* good and *also* provide a platform for modders to create, like, 8 additional, awesome stand-alone experiences to go along with the base game.  And that's not even mentioning the other, smaller mods that will be created.

If that's what we're in for, I'm chuffed.

It's an RPG. It is neither an FPS nor a spaceflight sim. Many seem to struggle with that distinction because it has guns and spaceflight.

Fair point. However is it really impossible for them to make a game with a combination of those features considering today's technology? Knackered old game engine aside.
Just because its an RPG does that really mean that by law the combat must be lukewarm at best? Seems nonsensical.

It would be awesome if they nailed gun play and space flight. I just don't expect that from them and won't get bent out of shape over things like no landing transition or poor cover mechanics.

I do expect a robust character spec system, good stories and quests and plenty of interesting explorable places off the beaten path, good crafting, etc. If they don't deliver on these core RPG parts I'll be the first to be all over them for it.

Space flight with some details abstracted or less than superb shooting and fighting are just extraneous stuff for me and the way I play their games. Like I said, it would be nice but that's not something I focus on or expect.

I hope the planets are not mostly empty
They've said procedurally generated (but by them, not us, so everyone gets the same planets) but with "some handcrafted touches."

I guess we'll have to wait and see just how much additional handcrafting they do and its quality.

I've long thought that procedural generation could help development.  A handcrafted world could look immensely better, but it takes a lot more time (and money) for people to develop.  A very complex and computer intensive world that takes a day or more to generate is still processing that isn't occurring on the client end.  Ideally, it will be generated once and doctored before the game releases, and downloaded once.

Handcraft the systems that operate on top of that world, and build integrate any story, plots, quest dialog, etc. manually.  Until the AI becomes more capable of taking that last bit.  Procedural generation of worlds is a logical first step towards a dynamic game.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

This game being hyped is also with the expectation that it's an RPG by Bethesda so expect a bunch of subpar gameplay, got it. lol

Good thing they've created such a following they've got fans making excuses for them.
I'll knock what needs knocking but your comment made about as much sense as knocking GTA because it's not Forza.

It's more like we want an RPG first, and are okay if the gunplay isn't Call of Duty level.

We all know you prefer PvP, so this isn't your type of game anyways, you just want to talk shit.

Ouch, very good point. However is it impossible for a company not run by a maniac with delusions of grandeur and a messiah complex to make a game with a combination of those features and release it some time in the next two decades?

If there's a genre that has been worked on extensively over the years, it's surely FPS games. So finding a few solid devs that can make exciting gunplay shouldn't be too difficult? It might be heavily dependant on their engine and in all honest, Bethesdas engines have never really been...groundbreaking...

I don't think it's a question of easy or hard, rather it's a question of money: If they wanted to do FPS gameplay, space flight, base building, RPG mechanisms, lot of stories, and huge amount of places to explore well, then they'd need many times the budget of a game with more narrow focus.

A game like Starfield that tries to have huge amount of stuff is either going to have most of that half-assed or cost a billion dollars to make.

Narcissistic egomaniac was the call from an Origin employee who worked with the dude for years.

I don't know what Todd Howard's deal is, but I wouldn't trust his pronouncements either.

Possibly Bethesda is afraid to put out anything that doesn't allow relatively easy full-on modding, as that's the thing that's saved their game sales countless times.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Seems to be a engine limitation problem.  SC is having trouble, Elite dangerous cant do it either.

Seems like it's "easy" to make a decent rpg, or decent fps or decent flight sim type game with air space combat but melding all three seems to be very difficult.

Dunno I think if we want such a game it will need a new engine built from scratch with this very blending in mind as it's main feature.

I would hardly call less than half your userbase being able to even maintain 60 FPS nailing it.

Get back to us if that changes due to optimization, and not CIG delaying the game another 9 years while hardware bails them out.

AAA studios have to show a profit and don't benefit from hundreds of millions of dollars in "free" funding.
