Almost a year since setting it on the training queue and 1.2 Billion ISK later, Bradford finally has one of the best ships in EVE Online: The Vargur. Too bad he's too afraid to fly the thing.

My advice, fly her when you are at home with no distractions, not when with the family showing nephews and nieces what the game is about. Hopefully that's not still too raw, to be frank if that had happened to me I would still be in recovery. :)

That's always the fundamental issue with games where you can lose your stuff. It encourages people to move with a zerg. It encourages people to put their "good stuff" away and only risk trash equipment... or even run around naked.

I love the thrill of danger these games provide, but your experience is really common and probably human nature.

Said the Pandemic Legion or Goonfleet member.  ;)

This is one big reason I left EVE 5 years ago, after training two pilots to fly a Rorquel capital mining ship which could perform their system wide boosting role behind the safety of a personal station CCP decided it should have to fly within 100 kms of the rest of the mining fleet in the belts.

They added a 10 minute or so shield of invulnerability, a whoop ass weapon of mass destruction for defense, and created awesome new drone mining capability.

Sounds great eh, more risk but now it would contribute heavily in gathering ore instead of sitting idle in a POS?

Except that, the Rorq was already a 3.5B ISK investment and the new drones in particular brought the total value over 10B.....

Talk about creating new content, Rorqs were already high priority targets but after the change I saw a Goon lead roam take out 25 in one evening as it moved relentlessly through renter space.

I never undocked any booster larger than a Porpoise from the date of the change which ultimately spoiled my fun, so after a 10 year run of continuous subs (six when I quit) I left EVE for good.

So yeah, I know exactly how the author feels...

Yea, it's not great. But market price in Jita is around 300Million, which I can afford to replace at least the hull. I also bought the Gila a while ago, probably over two years ago, and used it for running Abyssals, and I don't remember it costing as much as they do today.

Nothing compared to my Vargur to replace though.

Its nowhere near as risky as you think in hi-sec - btw a decent missioning fit with implants is going to run you 5-7Bn (decent not high-end), to put that 1 Bn hull cost in perspective ;)

I've flown marauders in hi-sec missions for years without even a slight issue (Golem, Kronos, Paladin...Vargur is a hideous abomination...no offense :D ).

Hitting the scan key every few seconds and watching who's in local was all that was needed.

IMO tension/risk is the whole point of Eve; but you could run a couple of missions on the test server so at least you get to fly the ship!

You know what makes me angry about your immature attitude?

You never, not even once, stop and thank the Goon commander for spending his entire evening running around providing two dozen other players with PvP excitement.

Think of it from his perspective.

He and his team of elite max equipped buddies - all of whom have invested countless hours in the game - take time out their busy schedules to provide some entertainment for some noobie low level players and for this they get nothing but hate.

Do you think he and his posse of 10 other death-boat commanders enjoy gang wtf stomping your arse all day?  They do NOT.  It is boring as hell but they're willing to do it ..... to MAKE YOUR GAME BETTER.

Frankly, your lack of gratitude is shocking.
Sure, they'd *prefer* to exclusively fight others combat pilots or pilots with escorts, but Kyleran *forced* them to have to attack players who were just interested in enjoying some PvE.  God, how much of a PITA is Kyleran for those Goons?

This is why I never tried EVE. I didn't want to spend time making a ship just to have it destroyed for lols by some angsty teen skipping school who's mad that he got turned down for a date.

Well I hope Wargfoot just forgot to end his comment with  "/s".  Otherwise how often would he like to have something you invested a major portion of your time demolished and with the prospect of it being repeated.

I HATE HATE HATE losing my stuff.  From the least copper to the flimsiest weapon.  If it's mine....I don't care that it's only pixels....ITS MINE.  I do like games that you can lose your stuff though.  The consequences really make it a more intense experience for me.  I do get upset, but it's worth it for the rush and the suspense of playing.  A shame that more don't like that type of consequence.  It really is fun in a masochistic way.

The really sad thing is none of the hardcore PvPers I met ... er and flew with ... sorry ... were angsty teenyboppers. They were all either business professionals or current or ex military. Outside the game most of them were quite well adjusted normal individuals. Strange but true.

It's sort of the same concept as "The Purge", helps those folks exorcize their inner psychopath.

See, the thing is many gamers expect everything to be "fair" for everyone in their games.

Those people should probably not play EVE.  (Or most PVP MMOs for that matter)

Classic EVE saying, 'If you ever find yourself in a fair fight someone did something terribly wrong.'

I guess the problem with games like Eve is that the great risk does not equal the great reward. The risk of losing everything you spent hundreds, maybe thousands of hours getting is offset by the great reward of what? You probably already have better stuff than the person that just lost everything, so the reward isn't close to the same as the person that lost it all.

If your reward is the feeling that you get making a person that has less than you lose everything, I feel sorry for your wife, kids and dog.

I just never found it fun for a game to have this dynamic.
