The thing I think most players do not seem to realise is that we can say this is not good for gaming, we can say there are loads of scams (and there are), we can say we will never play this type of game, but it will make no difference.

We said all this about F2P and it marched over gaming regardless of our objections. I saw posters on here who were against F2P who slowly came round to thinking "well, its not that bad" and then "I only play F2P because nearly everything is F2P". Slowly but surely this will all happen again, some of us will hold out more than others but even I have played a couple of F2P games in my time when I said I never would.

So I come back to old advice I have given, play that MMO you like now, play it to death because sooner or later the NFT's are coming your way as an entry level for your acceptance of crypto. Then eventually you will have to ask yourself "Am I going to ditch my favourite MMO because of Crypto", good luck answering that question.

I think we always end up supporting the least egregious of the lot. I don't think that will change because most of us do that in real life too. I will probably have to abandon MMORPGs altogether if it ends up really bad and I don't see how I can support gambling in any form except may be in a known quantity meaning like how I did in PSO2 I decide how much I am going to spend in the casino and I never spent more than that.

I can also do that without whatever abomination they introduce to our gaming since I see no other choice or I go play on private servers.

I think the real question that NFTs and Crypto will present the gaming community is simply 'how badly do we want a game?'  From what I've seen, the NFT/Crypto trend isn't adding anything new to the game play, while increasing the cost of entry and embracing some of the P2W aspects of older games.

Individual costs are increasing rapidly to make up for years of avoiding inflation.  Developers are seeing numbers in the volume of players, even for substandard quality games.  Companies are actively pursuing the course of inflating costs on more customers instead of taking their profit solely on the increasingly larger customer base.

The NFT/Crypto focus with its P2E lure doesn't benefit the customer any more than free samples at an ice cream shop.  The earnings offered to the player are a pittance in comparison to what the developers/companies hope to take in.  While some may actually prosper, a higher number won't.

The sad part is, I don't know if I wouldn't take a similar course if I were on the creation side of he equation.  Money is a powerful lure.

Gaming is fast becoming a rich man's game.  My near disastrous personal circumstances and impending life on a very fixed income will someday separate me from my hobby.  As a customer, I can't afford the risk afforded by this new monetization scheme.  Food is pretty important to me, also.

I had hoped for better from a hobby.  Something relatively inexpensive, but engaging me mentally.  Now, I am being priced out.  Can't say I'm happy about that.

I don’t think this is analogous to F2P.  F2P thrived because there was no barrier to entry. It literally cost 90% of the players nothing but time as they never spent a cent.  For the Crypto gaming to catch on,  people will have to actually purchase something.

It is for that reason that I think there is a chance to ward it off.   We will see.

If the recent events revolving around Pixelmon are any indication, we need better warding devices, and fast.  The more there are fools willing to give 73 million dollars to a nobody online, the more companies will see that as an opportunity they can't pass on.

Never underestimate the ability of greed to blind a person's common sense. The "play to earn" market is just the Toxic Stocks of this generation. The only people who will be getting rich are the brokers. ... Same as it ever was.

I think the lure of pay to earn will be as great as free to play as long as there is no stake to put in. In fact if they are free to join and then you earn money, they compound the attraction. If there is a stake then B2P may become the "stake" and I don't see that as too high for players to jump as they already do so, indeed I am sure you have seen that when you B2P you can purchase the likes of a "bronze, silver or gold package", that will be how your increasing "investment" will be rated in a B2P-P2E MMO.

I think many players are more savvy than they used to be about the effect of revenue methods on gameplay, but most are not bothered and they will carry us into a P2E future just like they did back in the days of F2P coming in.

I don't want to sound like a doom merchant, but I think it is always the best approach to prepare for the inevitable and that means play the MMOs you love now.

    The answer to your question:

"I think the real question that NFTs and Crypto will present the gaming community is simply 'how badly do we want a game?"

Is that we are prepared to pay anything, no paywall is too high. And here there may be no paywall at all, at least until you are well in to the game and learn about the advantages of "investing" in the game to "earn" more from it. I think a lot of players getting their fingers burnt may be the only way this tide gets turned.
