In game awards for your time are paramount to keeping players engaged, and Bradford can't think of one that players he speaks to love showing off more than a hard-to-earn character title. Is there a title you craved and had to have in any MMO you've played?

"Alliance Slayer" in WoW PvP lol. Can't remember how many you had to slay to get it but the goody-goodies needed to die.

Explorer in WOW way back in the WotLK days.

My last bit, Thunder Bluff, (I was Alliance in Emerald Dream which was a PvP/RP server then) was bugged so I submitted a ticket right from the spot where I should be getting credit and got the achievement via a CSR :)

And no I didn't use stealth, I got it with a Paladin.

DAoC "Lone Enforcer" for getting 2000 solo kills. I got up to 650 on my Warrior.

The funniest one in LOTRO was "Well Traveled".

You got it by falling down a well and dying.

Everyone in my Kin has this one. We called ourselves "Masters of the Blood Port" as a result.

For me it was High Warlord in vanilla WOW. I wasn't interested in raiding and had the time.

Otherwise, I only cared if there was a concrete reward ala SWTOR legendary for running every class story. Each on you completed gave you a new ultimate to use on a timer. although explorer titles are often fun to get in the right game. I cared more about exploring in say GW2 than many other MMOs.

    "Crosser of Roads" in LotRO.

To get it, you had to complete all of the quests from the chicken session play. Most of the quests were pretty straight forwards: go to another zone and speak with some animals. Sure, you're a level 1 chicken with no health who aggros mobs from a mile away, but still, just be careful and you should be OK.

    but the final quest......

for the final quest, you had to complete the objectives from every single previous quest, plus a bunch of new objectives, all in the same session. Basically, you had to visit every single pre-moria zone using a level 1 chicken....in one life.

Quickest I heard it completed was about 3.5 hours, longest was closer to 8 hours. In a single session, with a single life.

I attempted it a few times as part of guild groups, but inevitably I'd lose concentration, or not spot something, and then a single arrow would come flying in from some archer I aggroed from half a mile away and that would be it.

Chicken life, as the song says, it's a hard cluck life...

I'm a completionist, which has a quasi built-in feature of hoarding the titles as well.
Thus the only titles I crave/craved for are the "off-game" titles, or the full RNG ones.

In LotRO's case maybe my most craved is the Amazing Angler... available once a year, for about two weeks on a daily cooldown (meaning even if you're free during that time of the year, you have about 15-16 attempts), and it's so much of an RNG it makes the "random" in RNG to blush.

An another I really craved after were the different fashionista titles, awarded also one week every year, randomly, by a GM if you bumped into her in-game and he liked your outfit enough.

One I was proud of getting at the end (before Legends killed off TSW) was the Dev killing t-shirt (I don't remember whether it came with a title too, or not), since I don't pvp much it was very unlikely I'll cross that off the list, but somehow I managed to get there.

ed.  all this craving made me miss the closing questions of
"What is the most significant title you use in an MMO and why? Do titles even matter to you?"
(btw. my box has "of Snowbourn" in it... but I rarely use the title, most servers feel like home anyway)

Titles do matter, and (sticking to LotRO) my favourite is The Openhanded.

I loved it especially at start, when only a few players had it for a year - of course when the festival returned, a lot more players bagged the deed, but that meant less by that time.
As with all the hidden deeds/titles, the early birds get it "honestly".

(with the Openhanded's case supporting the poor on Christmas, while all the other players scold them off for the payback in event currency... not charitable at all)

"Jedi Knight" from preCU SWG. It was earned from getting full template and completing the Jedi Knight trials. I finished my build shortly after the CU hit but the Knight Trials had been disabled. It is THE reason I am playing Restoration 3 at the moment despite Jedi not being obtainable (yet). It's a videogame bucket list item.

"God Walking Amongst Mere Mortals" from the Original Guild Wars is hands down the best title in any game ever. Not only do few players have it because it was so hard to get, but it's just a damn cool title too!

I got "Road Kill" in Asheron's Call. The devs were summoning Tremendous Mongua all over Ayan Baqur and were talking to everyone in Global. I thought I was witty and said something to them, they teleported me to the feet of 3 of them and I was DESTROYED.

The gave me the Road Kill title for it.

RiP Asheron's Call... and my main Jayden.

Grand Marshal in vanilla, I was denied it by the 'cool kids'. I got a lot of hate for not adhering to the rules they set. I took first place for 3 weeks in a row, an unhealthy amount of gameplay. Then they ran 24/7 premades by sharing accounts to keep me out of the top 10.

Other title was the Horde Slayer. It kept bugging on me, I could never get the bounty trigger from kills. Though funnily enough purely on accident my girlfriend got the trigger, she went stealth as druid and people came after her only to see me, I killed them all. She got the title without killing a soul.

Well someone tried skipping the longstanding horde group that kept generating HWLs.  A dude had his GF share the account but our server was small enough that he just blacklisted himself anyway and couldn't keep it up.  Even in the "cool" group i played 14-17 hours a day for the last month

I'm a fan of "Seeker of Blood" and "The Strategist" in FFXIV. Seeker sounds so dark in a game like FFXIV and the Strategist just makes me thinks of those smarty-pants characters in many anime. Can't sleep on Jenkins in wow though since it can fit like a last name there.

"Silver Hand", it was the RR6 level in DAOC that I got on my Nightshade. Back then it was really freaking hard to get Realm Ranks and getting to 6 was a big deal. Had a Nightshade in the my guild who had gotten to RR 10 and was basically a god on the server.. I couldn't figure out how he did it given how much time it must of took. I think he was the first to get RR10 on a Nightshade in the game.

We had an Inf named Rock like that on MLF Albion, RR 10 very early on plus he was one of the earliest multi-boxers.

He would regularly run his own 4 man groups (every character in them had "rock" in their names) then pick up four randoms, almost everyone had been in his leveling groups at one time or another.

Despite being deadly as an Inf he was one of the nicer guys I ever met in MMO gaming.

I am not really a titles player, they mean little to me, rather like Steam achievements. So many guildies love them, I can remember conversations where people were showing off titles, it was a bit like that scene in Jaws where Roy Scheider realises he does not have the scars the others have. :)

In LOTRO it's not so much about wearing the title but it's not having it in your arsenal that is pain. It's the UNDYING title! Gotta never suffer a defeat until level 20. I think my favorite is still the Unwise title you receive after ingesting poisonous and rotten cheese which means certain death
