Bloomberg has reported this morning that Amazon and Leyou Technologies Holdings have canceled the in-the-works Lord of the Rings MMORPG, citing a dispute in contract negotiations from Tecent's recent purchase of Leyou.

It honestly looks like Tencent's recent acquisition is the wrench that eventually scuttled this game. I mean, Amazon is something of a mess of a game developer/publisher lately... but still. Woulda loved to see more Middle-Earth video games coming our way... atleast ones that aren't centered around Gollum.. ugh.
Calling a MMO failed when its just barely got to the drawing board. ok.

Seems like the very definition of project failure which btw isn't always a bad thing as many need to have the plug pulled sooner rather than later.

Yes, Lotro is still going. I don't know about a graphical upgrade though. It does have a 64 bit client and will use DX11 I think. Can't say past that.

I'd rather another studio take the IP mantle to give Middle Earth the game it deserves.
Sad, because that may be many years from now.
MMORPG experience + Survival game experience... and they mostly honored the lore of REH in Age of Conan... and the lore for The Secret World.
What we know now the average time frame for AAA mmos is 7+ years, this was just announced last year, barely in its infancy. I think this would more fall in line with a failed business dealing that an failed mmo.
If Amazon had any confidence in themselves they would just make a AAA game without paying any added licensing fees or trying to use someone else's popular brand.
Create YOUR own brand,a title that years later people are saying AMAZON made that great game.
Developing a game is VERY difficult for studios now a days, they all are making the same mistakes, looking for some gimmick to cash in with a cash shop.
I don't want anything to do with Tencent or PW or LOTR for that matter,i want a AAA open world interactive game, you don't need a brand IP to pull that off.

Lotro was a great game but it has not aged well a new entry in that universe if done well would be a dream come true
I was really hoping to see Amazon revitalize a Middle Earth world with new polish. Ah well
