It's actually a lie. The actual employees in Texas studio have no idea what this is about. Kotaku is Kotaku, but people eat a lie today, so why not publish it as truth because everything that stinks sells better than everything that smells like roses...

You have no idea what you are talking about xD
It is okay to like Star Citizen and to cheer for its success.
Here is the problem people have - it seems like one of the following is true:

    1: Game is pay-to-win.
2: You can spend thousands on a ship and have no real advantages.

I don't know how you avoid really angry people when this thing releases.

It seems that an early backer is expecting something for his money and he's going to be pretty upset (I'd guess) if his $1,500 Ultimate Panther of Death is easily bested by a easily acquired noob boat.

Conversely, if I join a game and get whacked by the Barge of Death that I literally had no chance to beat - a Barge of Death I cannot earn in game or ever hope to afford then I'll write off the game as a rich boy's playground and go elsewhere.

So are early backers getting ripped off or is the game pay-to-win?

    Kobayashi Maru, eh?

Hey gotta get those $900 ships built so they can bring in more revenue.......
Posts like this are hilarious. Just shows you have never played the game. Almost every ship is purchasable in game. The game literally chucks money at you to buy ships. Yes there will be a wipe but there has not been one for months and months, some people have had their ships nearly a year(from in game purchase) much longer than games like Escape from Tarkov.

People really do not understand the scope of this game and the bugs that come with games with similar open world, vehicles, and large player counts. There has been a massive amount of progression. Maybe not near where they should be and they have made mistakes but you can't be mad at the people who forgive them and continue to support them especially when the game is getting drastically better with each recent update.

Haven't played the game but I did see all the articles saying they were selling ships for $800-900 real money......YOu can have your p2w game, i'll gladly pass on this.

I have put over a hundred hours into star citizen this month. People acting like there isn't a game to be played either have not played it recently or likely have not played it at all. The xenothreat event was great!

In the end star citizen keeps succeeding because enough people have played it and can see it will be great.

How exactly DO you play an unfinished game?!?

It's a really funny video, any gamer should enjoy it independently of your opinion about Star Citizen!  B)

You should try it! And in the case you have already, this one is nice too:

What do you mean? Many games are unfinished but playable. I spend most my time learning all the stats on the ships, weapons, shields, coolers. Then I test them out on many different ships. I do the Idris group mission, or hammerhead missions. Xenothreat events, bounty hunting or pirating. I dont even do the boring gameplay loops. I focus on pvp and have more to do than I have time.

Pretty telling when in a 12 minute video there's about 30 seconds of explaining what there is to do and showing any footage of it. The rest is just sweeping shots of landscapes, ships and stations with commentary about what might, maybe, possibly, hopefully someday exist.

The game has pretty assets, for now, but I think most people care more about the 'game' part of video games. The game can't live on its visuals forever.
    Glad you to asked!

    Enjoy B)

I don’t know what 3.12 did to my framerates but I hover around 15-25 now with frequent drops. I have tried just about every trick there is but right now SC is unplayable for me.

I had to swallow my pride and accept that there is a reason this game has 350 million funded and growing. That money didn't just appear from thin air. This game has continuous support, which a lot of games can't say they have.

Whether I like or dislike this game is irrelevant, but I have to give it to that team for what they've accomplished. Marginal Progression.

The idea of the game has a lot of support. The game, as of yet, does not exist, but only components of it in an alpha state. Maybe when it reaches a release state it will be the best game ever. Maybe I'll be alive to see it, but with the pace of development so far there is a genuine possibility I may not.

Performance is still very much server tied so depending on your luck when joining a server that has been going for a lot of time or a fresh one will impact your performance.

Also, Spawning at a major city everyone will have bad frames, but once you go out in space it improves tremendously.

Still, there's some "optimizations tricks" that might improve the experience:

Honestly... of all the issues to try and bash SC over... this ain't one of them.

I recently upgraded from an i5 6700k to an i9 9900k and that difference alone was huge for me. I was bottlenecking my 1080ti pretty hard. I gained around 20 fps. Sounds like you have a good settup although a 1070 is becoming somewhat dated but still should run most everything on med/high settings at 1080p with stable frames.

I upgraded from a 980ti to a 1080ti and had another 10-20 frame increase. 980ti and a 1070 are basically the same. I think its mostly a SC server issue but at the same time you could probably gain about 30 more frames on average just from a newer GPU and CPU.

Yeah, an upgrade will happen in due time. Problem is that I was running SC perfectly fine before 3.12 hovering around 35-40 FPS on the highest settings.

Well, I think CIG does have a grasp of what visuals do for marketing.  And marketing is what they do to fund the game's development.  Unlike a traditional company that might do one convention marketing push a year, CIG is pimping SC 24/7.  They've got to spend a considerable amount of time, effort, and money just to produce all this marketing paraphenalia to keep the supporters spending money.  Add servers with some sort of gameplay.  And more visuals.  I really see it as a fork from Hollywood style promotion.  And obviously they have brought in the money.  If not the speedy development.

They've got a live service game in early alpha.  Ten years in....

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.
