Honestly not even interested in the direction they took the game with this one, should have focused on making the core game more enjoyable and filling out that giant galaxy with something more to do in it.

    From my perspective:
Excellent Base Layer Of A Game

But frankly its boring, they overhauled mining which made it fun and then just stopped, trading is boring, passenger missions are meh, salvaging is just collecting worthless containers and getting attacked, the galaxy is devoid of pretty much everything, the large capitol ships are stupid money sinks but hey they look cool! My point is the features they have in the game are shallow they should have focused on bringing them to a fun factor first then added layers of depth with the first person bit but thats just my 2 cents I like the game and I want it to succeed just feel like they jumped the gun a bit trying to compete with other titles and it will ultimately keep the game niche at best.

This update is going to open up exploration in so many ways, although most of the commentary has been about the combat stuff, I really hope they do something for exploration also this year, so much potential there, they could take notes from No Mans Sky in that regard

I do wonder how they will integrate a star-faring game with "footwork". For that matter how well has this worked in NMS? It seems to me you have a gameplay 'continental rift' here, essentially trying to tie two different games together?

Now if they can just get a functioning player-driven economy like Eve... wahoo!

Large-scale in terms of the size of the universe, yes, but still not "massively" multiplayer afaik. While Star Citizen promises a real MMO universe.

I don't think I have ever seen a game where spae battle and land battle was good....It's almost always ship focused and that is where they lose me.

I think both Elite: Dangerous and Star Citizen are already large scale. It's just that in Star Citizen the scale is huge amount of inconsequential space between few points of interest in their single solar system. Elite: Dangerous makes better use of their scale.

Can you guys unicorn all that from a screenshot? :D

Cause FPS battles like those have been a thing in Star Citizen for years now.

What's next? Gonna make a party when ship interiors or EVA come to play? :D

Oh wait, you never even played Elite in the first place. Such weakling nonsense, as usual.

If you played ED and SC you'd know that it's the way around.

SWG already did a pretty good job (for the time). It even had multiplayer ships with interiors , that SC fans now claim is so innovating. As SWG is an old MMORPG, it obviously had no fps combat, but more old rpg style combat.

I hope E:D devs will hire some devs specialised in fps combat development.

I will admit, I'm a little bit worried about this new expansion.

I play elite with a HOTAS setup and it's great fun! Sure, there isn't that much depth to the gameplay, but playing with a stick means that simply flying the ship is really satisfying.

But, I cant imagine using a HOTAS to control my player will be doable or effective, which will mean I'll need to move things around on my desk every time I transfer to a planet or back into space. It may sound like a minor problem, and it is really, but it's something I worry about. Plus, I don't like first person shooters, so the planetary gameplay doesn't appeal to me in general, but I imagine there will be some worthwhile rewards that will drive me to engaging with it.

I mostly agree with you and have the same issues with the game. Just two nitpicks:

    1) While there are good elements in the base of the game, the huge size is an advantage and a disadvantage. The advantage is that everyone can go carve a small piece of the galaxy with the BGS without anyone noticing them and messing up with them (some people like it for this exact reason and I appreciate that). The disadvantage is that doing so is largely inconsequential. Plus all systems are the same. Nothing you do really matters.

This also means that the only "hotspots" for communal activity are the community goals which are just "kill 1000" or "fetch 1000" quests. And this seems like a structural issue to me which kinda spoils the "base layer" of the game.

    2) I am not sure the game is considered niche. Not a blockbuster either but I think it is doing pretty well. I and you may be disappointed with it but there are plenty that like it.

I disagree for the same reasons: sameness and lack of hotspots for meaningful community activity.

I think the difference between us is that in Elite I'm happy flying alone. For me the design without hotspots allows to do that. I guess for each his own.

Agree, different strokes for different folks. And their player numbers clearly show there is a crowd for that. But they already have the solo mode for that, they did not necessarily need all the empty space. They went for size and realism but as far as I am concerned it has more downsides than pros.

Unless by "alone" you also mean "out of civilization", "without NPCs". I would be interested to know what percentage of the player base goes out of the bubble, because these would be the ones catered for with that design.

A space game that is actually doing things with a released product!

On the issue of scale, I do agree with some that you cant get a scope of things. The only time i get a sense of scale is when playing in VR. This is one of those games that is vastly superior in VR for that reason alone.

Man I need to redownload this game, pirate hunting in my viper was fun!
