Maybe I'm getting old but what's the difference between this "survival game" and the plethora of other carbon copies? How is it any different in terms of gameplay from Ark or Conan Exiles.

I don't get it. These games have harsher grind than most korean grinder MMOs. What is wrong with you? They are all pretty uninspired.

Surprisingly great game, especially for the price. It's so well done on so many levels. I am not usually one for death penalties and as pissed as it makes me to see some of my skills go down after a death it still makes me really care about dying, which in most games it's just a nuisance. I think people who are downing this game are just pissed their friends have abandoned them for a few weeks, but fear not, the content will shrivel up and they will be back soon. :)

Having checked it out recently, I had no problem not playing it. Love the setting, just not the game. Glad it's doing well though. Lets see where then population stands in a couple months.

Honestly, I don't know why everyone is frothing over this. It's just another half-finished, janky survival game. Is it because Vikings are the new big thing now that zombies are on the way out or...?

Well, read the article and see what people are saying. I don't think it's because of Vikings.

I do think it has more to do with people being somewhat disposed toward a Viking game and being rewarded with interesting experiences while exploring.

Also, it seems that for some, having others there is part of the fun. I personally came into MMORPGs with the idea that they were more like survival games because of how they were advertised (play in a "world") and while my first MMORPG, Lineage 2, wasn't a survival game, the gameplay revolved around what you did in-game and your relationships with others.

In a sense, this game and others allow you to have that experience. This game seems less punishing than some others as well as less strict about its survival aspects from the little I've played so far.

    So that helps.

To be honest I never even think of a 'Viking' theme while playing.
I enjoy it so much because it is a really well done PVE- focused online Survival RPG.
Being PVE focused is a pretty big reason it has seen success I think.
I know there are games like it but for some reason this one just 'clicks' for me (and millions of others it seems)  on many levels.

That's a really good point, the idea that it is a bit more pve focused.

I agree, i don't get "viking" but that doesn't really matter to me.

These are a few minor improvements I would like to see. Are there any improvements, additions, or refinements any of you would like to see?

    Maps:
One improvement I would like to see is the ability to share Points of Interest on the map. Blueturtle has been exploring a bit more than I and has found a few cool places. Their map is marked but I don't see it. Being able to share POIs in some way would be helpful.

The ground leveling hoe could be a bit better... more consistent? I'm still using the early hoe so maybe better tools do a better job. That would actually provide a good incentive to craft better versions. Leveling ground is a little bit of pain and struggle.

I would like to see build snapping points improved. The system is really almost good enough but I do think it could be better to allow for more flexible and well constructed builds. An example (one of many): when building walls on inclined terrain, getting them to snap well is tricky. Sometimes they clip a little too low into the ground and sometimes they snap above ground level. It's possible to level and fill, but with some improved snapping points that wouldn't be necessary.
    I agree.

For #1 what we do is PING the map (Middle mouse button) and then we can mark locations on our own but a more integrated function would be good.

For #2 I think there is a easier way.   I struggled but one of my buddies is our main builder and he has created some fantastic stuff so I assume he found a better way.

I so feel you on the hoe. Some extra visual feedback is needed to see the range and depth (or height) of what you are doing, some basic raster or grid of some kind.

I would like to add that a command in building mode to adjust height would be great. By the time you are trying to put a third wall on top of the second one you'll be breaking your camera to get the right angle.

I won't go into why this game works really well compared to others. Most of the "critique" doesn't go much further then 'its really popular so it must be dumb' or 'I don't like EA games so this must be bad.'

"I can't stop thinking about and playing Valheim. And I'm pretty sure I'm okay with that in the end. I've wanted a game where I could just relax and play, one that isn't overly grindy, but still challenges you to explore and discover. Valheim feels complex, and seemingly every time we see something new, another peel of the onion is pulled back, exposing even more systems and complexities lying under the surface. It's been a real treat to explore, and one I can't wait to do so more with my friends as soon as I can."

I feel like the above sums it up for me.

I feel Valheim has been grossly over rated,a very sub par game with ugly rectangle huts repeated everywhere.

All that aside, the thing that would really make my day is if thousands of Valheim players went into Atlas Discord and spammed photos of Valheim gameplay.

I would love to see their reaction and attempts to slow it down lol.

I own both games. Atlas is pretty, but a much inferior 'game' IMO.

What games have you played lately or not-so-lately that are good? I'm genuinely interested, as I think contrarian opionion is healthy.

Building just takes practice for me. The more I build, the more I learn about building. I get new ideas all the time, better ways to support my structures, better chimney methods, better layouts, and then access to ever better materials that throws new variables into the mix.

Valheim requires a little patience and effort which a lot of games go out of their way to remove. I think that is part of the charm for me. I can't just slap a few buildings together and call it a day. It takes a little thought, planning, and effort. When things come together it is satisfying.
At the end of the day, early access or full release it's just not my style of game.

I'm not a builder, in FO76 I've literally built three camps in 17 months, definitely more of slap it together and call it a day mindset.

I'm definitely not a survivalist, I cheered every time Bethesda decided to walk back on such mechanics and if I "die" in a game once a week, well that's once too many.

Godz walk the earth...and I am one of them.

I am not entirely sure what is about Valheim. I normally don't enjoy survival games very much. When Ark came out I grew bored in a few days.
But a few things might be the reason...
    - Immersive
    - true to its viking roots
    - Attention to detail
    - It has progression content and meaning (it is not just a sandbox)
    - A great game already with a lot of content, and therefore huge potential
    - Their decision making is good, which bodes well for the future

Not really a fan of the Viking aesthetic too much.. I did enjoy the show for what it's worth. Glad people are enjoying it though. I feel the same thing about Pirates. Just not really a fan of the aesthetic/theme.

The “Viking Age” and the “Vikings” are purely mythological creations. But there are of course interesting historical facts about the Nordic people. Viking mythology definitely became mixed up with the real facts from the history of Nordic people. That is modern-day "Viking" Culture. Nordic people did not even call themselves such a term. Something about that bothers me, I can't put my finger on it directly.

Also, they were not giants as Hollywood portrays, most were around 5 ft tall on average although muscular. So basically Warcraft Dwarves! LOL! I can't lie though, a boat full of angry dwarves with axes is still sort of intimidating haha imagine them running at you full speed.

Look, I know this game isn't a historically accurate game, I get it, still does not excuse the "Viking" theme for me.

The whole "survival game but in this setting" thing is getting tired if im being honest. Also, the game is EA, not my cup of tea to pay for an EA Viking Survival game. Way too many negatives for me ha but I DO wish them success! More games are always a good thing.

So we finally got some iron tonight on our server, but after clearing out 2 crypts we only managed to get about 170-180 scrap iron, which didn't seem like much.

We did some exploring after we built the new longboat and one of our community member didn't go prepared and ended up dying, stranding the new longboat in distant lands. Thankfully we had other boats with which to do a rescue mission and get the new boat back as well as his corpse.

Actually, the only reason everyone was eager to help was because upon him dying, he accidentally ran across a merchant, lol. So of course we were all like, "Hell yeah!" to go and buy our new equipment.

Our next project will be to investigate the mountains more so we can make some frost arrows to take down the next boss Bonemass.

Note to self, if I ever need help recovering my corpse, I should say I ran across a merchant.

Well at least the developers are Swedish. The game is based on Norse mythology so its more fantasy and not trying to be like shows like Vikings or The Last Kingdom.

Perhaps they based it on 6 th century Anglo Saxons.
