It's another year, it's another Game Awards come and gone. This year saw some unprecedented challenges in all facets and walks of life, and it was on full display as presenters and award winners mostly joined in via Zoom, and performers performed on video feeds, rather than the main stage. However, what didn't change were announcements and the actual awards.

I have to say it is rather noticeable that the Game Awards are structured to not give awards to genres that gaming media journalists have issues with. Roleplaying gets an award, but nothing for Shooters. FPS are a staple of gaming but gaming journalism has issues with that and it shows here. Sure Half Life Alyx got in under VR but that's a "platform" award. Which shows how popular they are even when you try to pretend they don't exist.

Good to see NMS recognition, they are single handedly (to my knowledge, though maybe PoE?) showing how to operate a unique and fair revenue system over a time frame you would expect for a MMORPG. Don't expect any other company to follow with this model, as gaming history shows us it is only abusive monetary model ideas that move at light speed around the gaming industry.

Not sure about remakes getting onto the list; what next, games that just have big graphics updates being contenders for an award? I have heard they did a lot to FF VII, but still it is a remake, maybe they should have their own category?

Why do the journalists from the major rags think people are stupid? That's what I can't stand, like they think they're so smart that noone can see that what they're doing is trying to influence the young into favoring progressive themes in video games.

Its an agenda and its blatant but whats worse is they act like people can't see it. "I went to a New England or California liberal university, these plebs will never see what I'm up to! har har har har"

    "lighten up francis."

People get to make the video games they want to make. That should never, ever be a question.

If the people covering these games like or want to support them that's their business. I'm sure you would be "all a titter" if some more conservative game won.

Also, these awards really don't mean much. I'm kind of glad there is recognition for game developers and it can be fun to watch (other than the blatant advertising but whatever) but people need to put this stuff into perspective and not attach too much of your own self worth to the proceedings.

They are just video games. Just like other awards shows are just about movies or songs, etc.

There will be another next year.

The actual voting part of the Game Awards is meaningless. The winner in every category is selected by the judges and you don't have a voice. And the judges liked what they liked.

The actual game of the year that actually matters is the Player's Voice award. Always has been. That's where your voice is heard.

How many of these fragile, whining egos have actually tried the game? Or are you just railing cuz you feel it is too SJW for your toxic male gaze? I absolutely hated the first TLOU, thought it was clunky and never finished it. I played some of TLOU2 because it came with the console I bought. I thought the game was beautiful, visually interesting with a tense atmosphere. While it was nowhere near my goty (I actually voted Ghost of Tsushima...did you unhappy posters vote?) I can understand why some people (journalist or otherwise) voted for it. I just find all the anger at awards of all things, hilarious.

Last of Us 2 seems to have done well. I tried to play the first game on my PS3 Eagle Eye for Playstation 3 - DiscoAzulcom

with the little gadget that allows you to use a mouse and keyboard(eagle eye converter),I never got very far before I was completely overwhelmed and died in the first part itself. I was unable navigate properly. Game was probably never meant to be played on a mouse and kb no matter what gadget you employ.

I have been always very curious about the story and always meant to sit and watch a walkthrough but I don't have time to spare for that in my rather hectic life. The second game seems to have made a lot of people angry because it favours certain interest and I don't understand why that is an issue. All the years that have passed without stories that focus on these interest has never once been weighed in to show that it is about time these stories were told.

I would support it wholeheartedly if only I could play it. I have no idea whether the game deserves the accolades but I leave that to the people who have actually played the game.

You know how difficult i am to please but i may have to agree with this assesment because it blew me away.I was also surprised because i thought given Square's trend over the last 7 or so years that i would see a very simple, shallow remake but they actually put a lot of effort into it.
Typically remakes just feel like the exact same game however with FF7 it feels like a brand new game.
What makes it more impressive is that i don't even like FF7 combat and yet the game overall still impressed me.

The biggest laugh i got out of browsing over the winners>>>Best Esport ATHLETE ...ROFLMAO.

I used to consider myself and actual athlete and would take serious offense to any gamer being called an athlete because of a game.
The only argument if there is even one is that a gamer uses his mind as does an athlete and often you can outsmart a better athlete to victory. However simple keyboard and mouse button pressing does not support the mind use theory in a way that acknowledges an athlete.

Maybe you do not. But it's easy to see the overt militarism of something like Call of Duty as leaning conservative. If you are conservative or if you support that military fantasy, you aren't viewing those games as political, because that's your status quo.

All things are political. All things. It's just a matter of what politics being used for what purposes with what degree of tact and subtlety.

I wonder what a person does to be an ESport Athlete?
What does it mean to be an athlete?
1 : a person who is trained or skilled in exercises, sports, or games requiring physical strength, agility, or stamina.

Well to be in E-Spots you need to do a lot of training to build up the needed skills to win., Such as.

    • Scream Endless Words that sound like Vulgar Profanities but can bypass the profanity filter and not get you kicked out of the completion. This takes a LOT of Stamina and Cardio to maintain that level of constant yelling, not to mention strong vocal cords, and quick thinking to make sure you call someone "Stuffed Cabbage" so harsh that it felt like you called them a "Fucking Asshole" when they fragged the hell out of you.
    • A E-Sports player must also have very well built agility to dodge any blame for the mission failure.
    • A Strong Constitution and Endurance to withstand the endless barrage of veiled vulgar profanities that get spewed at them.
    • Their fingers must be strong as Iron, to maintain the endless mashing of the buttons, because we all know that the harder, faster, and more times you mash that button the greater the chance you have to winning! And of course you can run and shoot faster the harder to press the buttons, to powerful fingers and near indestructible tips are requirement for E-Sport gamers, and to achieve this level of perfection they must endlessly drive their hands into vats of Cheeto dust and Crushed cans of Mountain Dew to keep them tough and hard, a true E-sports gamer must never be used for anything weak, like sex or washing.

So.. as you can see.. it takes a lot of work and dedication to be the best.. they deserve to be called athletes.

Well, that was "if ... "

I don't really look at any game and say "oh my it's liberal I have to play it" or "Oh my it's really conservative I have to play it."

If the game is good or has something I like I'll play it. I'm ok with people, AS one Youtuber (ACG) said "getting their message out."

Fine by me and good on them. Now if the game is racist or abusive in a way that I don't like I won't play it. No matter where what side of the spectrum it's coming from.

    Poster above mentions Microsoft..lmao
Yo udo realize it was Microsoft that forced out SOT WAY too early before it should have and at a whopping $80 price tag,so don't go expecting anything good to come out of Microsoft.

I talked about what is typical of remakes and why i thought FF7 remake showed a lot of effort.Microsoft did remakes of it's AOE series and they were LAZY cheap remakes.I am simply trying to point out that Microsoft along with it's recent forced W10 crap is NOT the good guy...EVER.

These awards certainly seem meaningless to me.

I've been noticing this for a few years, but it definitely seems that the games industry media is going through the same thing that the film and TV industry media went through (and is mostly stuck in).

If I wanted to be really cynical, I'd say that they're becoming pretentious snobs who enjoy the smell of their own farts. They seem to be ignoring the engineering, the gameplay, and are instead focusing on the art and drama, which is why story-focused games and esports are getting the attention.

If I wanted to be more realistic, I'd say that being a professional game critic / journalist simply involves playing such a large quantity of games that they don't really have the time (or inclination) to get deeply involved in the gameplay, especially true if they are having to review games in genres that they are not particularly interested in. So, the art and the story become easy targets to talk about and rate and thus the perceived importance of those features rises.

If I wanted to be generous, I'd say that having probably been a gamer for a decade or longer before even becoming a journalist and critic, there's an inevitable sense of "been there, done that" with the gameplay. I mean, most hack'n'slash games, most FPSes, most driving games etc all play pretty much the same as they always have so it must be hard to get enthusiastic about the minor improvements seen over the years. Much more obvious are the increases to graphics, the new settings and the new stories.

Whatever the real reason, all I know is that games reviews, just like film and TV reviews, have become completely meaningless to me. I'll still read them for the small amount of factual information they contain, but as soon as it switches to opinion / judgement, im out. Sadly, even the amount of factual information about the actual gameplay has been diminishing over time.

If you think that being left leaning means you are against the military that would make sense. Not sure then what the Red Army was doing in the USSR back in the day mind you. :)

But does the military define FPS? I question that from Doom to even CP 2077. Now it can be tricky to define a FPS, I would not actually put CP 2077 in that category. But many FPS have a lot of story, the definition can get blurred.

But if what you are saying is true, is that why The Game Awards leave FPS of the list? That would be a political move that should not be part of our hobby. Personally I think they just don't like the idea of young guys with guns and that FPS feeds the desire of youngsters to get them. There is no evidence that there is any influence mind you.

Those of you who understand what games have come out on which platform might be able to answer this. Does the number of platforms your game comes out on influence the chance of getting an award? I notice they had a separate award for mobile, but I am not sure it is that easy to ensure fairness.

If your PC/console game had some sort of version on mobile, that would hugely increase your chance of getting an award. And which version comes first seems to be changing, mobile is increasingly considered right from the beginning.

The same is true for games that only come out on PC or Console, they do seem to have a disadvantage.

And I'm somewhere in the middle. GoT was okay. Beautiful and expansive but a bit vapid. Fun and content-filled, but umabitious and uninteresting. Not unlike Assassin's Creed.

And yes. Regardless of quality, Cyberpunk is the most overhyped game of all time. No game can live up to that.

I wonder at the nominating process behind awards like this.  Really, lumping Sim and Strategy into one category, while giving eSports 6 awards, including Best ESports Host?  What's next Crowdfunder of the Year?

(P.S. What's an honest WWII strategy game got to do to compete with Microsoft Flight Simulator?  Is MFS simply the only one they know?)
