Genshin Impact has been profitable for miHoYo. Very profitable, actually, as it released its Gacha-based RPG in September. As the dust settles, we now know that mobile alone has brough the Shaghai-based developer $245m in just that first month.

You see, the dopamin addicts have open wallets. Its easy nowdays to crack the subconciousnes, so people spend money on a product due predatory tactics. And hence people got used to consum without questioning their time spend, those zombies are easy prey for fast money. Good for the company, honestly. I would try to do the same, if i could.

yep if you look at the number, and people pay for the gacha lootbox systems.

And they managed to do this despite pathetic summoning rates, even by gacha standards, and overpriced currency, even by gacha standards.

Lot of unfortunate suckers out there.

Well folks, I guess gacha is here to stay for years and years to come, because people indirectly gave game companies validation to have such a system in their games

With all the lootbox related court problems EA is dealing with, they are most likely paying close attention to gacha.

It's a matter of time they jump on it too.

Apparently people like their surprise mechanics best when they get surprised less often and when all the playable characters are little girls and the game is made in China.

When it's Star Wars icons of either sex locked behind fairly generous drop rates by a NA company, they start social media campaigns against it and governments investigate.

File this one also under "gamers do the darndest things."

I spent money once on a mobile gacha game and i learned my lesson real quick that the draw rates in gacha games aren't impacted at all in how much a person spends; so from that point on, i just play gacha games with the free currency the game gives the player from just playing over time.

Because it just isn't worth the money; also, i can't count how many time i've pulled some super rare limited banner character in a gacha game without spending a dime... i just did it 3 times last week when Illusion Connect launched globally.

I'd rather save my money for things that really matter; like Cyberpunk 2077 / Witcher 3 merchandise. :D

Remember, gaming revenue systems it will only get worse. That's the history of gaming since it went online, slowly becoming more about microtransactions and less about "box" and dlc revenues. During this process, the switch to casino play began.

But as I said, it does not end here, every time we have something questionable done revenue wise, something else is being dreamt up to hit us down the line.

Some people never learn. They keep spending and spending, and that's not going to end until they realise what they're doing.

    It's a serious addiction.

I don't think we have any hope to change this because players are a willing participant to this travesty.

I 100% agree with all the gambling related comments. This is something that should be heavily regulated by all governments, same as with any addictive substance. BIG disclaimers, a ban on selling to underaged, etc.

On the flipside HOWEVER, I genuinely like their operating model. It is easily achievable to complete every single bit of content in the game without spending $1 or investing hundreds/thousands of hours. And this will likely be the case for a long time. But if you can afford to, and want to, you can spend as much (or as little) as you want.

I am lucky enough to earn sufficient amounts of $$$ to afford to spend $100-200/month on games, and since COVID ran the river dry, I spent it all on Genshin this month. Next month however there are enough new games coming out that I won't (personally) spend more than $10. Other people I know who distribute their income differently have spent $2k+. It's 100% their choice and they are happy to make it. Personally I prefer going on nice vacations (have a $20k one coming up soon, fairly standard spend), which others might view as hyper-over-spend, but it's what I choose to spend my funds on.

And this is why gacha is here to stay. Since we are flexing, my combined income is $200k annually. I spend $0 on micro transactions and maybe $100 monthly on games (steam mostly). Back when I was gullible like you I'd spend $1k+ monthly on micro transactions and made about $80k combined annually. Point is, it has nothing to do with disposable income and "I choose to spend how I spend" but all about not supporting predatory practices. I luckily came to my senses and even with a huge income boost I have no desire to spend a dime on micro transactions.

I've spent a lot of money on this game and I don't regret it. I know this may be hard for the people here to believe, but the game is actually fun and earned the cash I spent. However, I also recognize lootboxes and the the way this game monetizes is very exploitative. I've seen streamers spend thousands of dollars on this game (which i don't recommend). This game prays on those with gambling addictions and Mihoyo absolutely needs to make changes to it. That being said, I spent what I spent, and don't intend to spend more until new content is added and changes are made. If you have a gambling problem or poor impulse control, I don't advise spending money, and instead going the f2p route, or simply avoiding this game entirely.

If the companies would just focus all that creative energy on making the game better...  But accountants count dollars, not smiles.

Logic, my dear, merely enables one to be wrong with great authority.

This one streamer spent $7k and got all genshin characters by that time though he was pissed he spent that much and quit the game lol.
    All that money for nothing.

Gacha streamers are hands down some of the most predatory people in gaming. They spend tons of money - usually donated to them by their audience for that very purpose - to make the gambling look more appealing to that same audience than it actually is.
