Looks like a fun game, but I will not play gacha games like that, I already play BDO and although I stopped spending, I learned my lesson there. And with Archeage before BDO. Never again!

Wtf is Genshin and why should I care?
It's an RPG Game, and you are responding on a Gaming Site
More importantly it unexpectedly made a boat load of money while being well received by western audiences and you can easily see how game developers will quickly try to emulate it's success in future games.
It has made a lot of money, that's all that counts, Gatcha is heading our way and we may soon be fondly remembering how "fair" GAAS was. It is tragic really. Of course it won't be called Gatcha, elements of that payment model will get slowly introduced.

The game raised 250 million dollars in a month with just a few hours of generic and predictable stories. 250 million taken from people with gambling addiction and people who will have problems with gambling.

Developers have spent years creating a friendly interface for people to get addicted to a type of casino slot anime game and some imbeciles call this game masterpiece.
    A Masterpiece of what?
A masterpiece in taking money from people with mental and vulnerable problems in a worldwide pandemic, if so, then I agree with you.

European Union will go after these developers soon, so I hope.
250 million from people with mental problems involving gambling, this game must be fought and not revered as this site has been doing.

I don't know, but it looks like they're investing a lot of money on sites like MMORPG.COM to stay in the spotlight and attract more and more addicts.

Masterpiece is really stretching it. The parts of the game that are good are good, but with such sparse storytelling, lack of characterization, and lack of enemy & objective variety, it strains credulity to call it a masterpiece.

I hate the monetization model of course, but I don't see what's wrong with advertising and writing about an amazing rpg on a web site dedicated to rpgs and mmos.

Most of the stuff on here is hyping up unfinished crowdfunded mmos that play like shit even when they release or get close to release. It was refreshing to play a game that actually worked, was tons of fun, and had some pretty neat ideas.

I despise ESO's monetization model as well, but I fanboi it up at every opportunity regardless since the game itself is just so bloody good.

I mean the whole front page is framed with a Raid: Shadow Legends ad so I don't think we're particularly discerning here.  That game is even more predatory while simultaneously being lower effort than Genshin Impact.

Calling this a masterpiece really tells something about the decline of mmorpg.com - How much did they pay you to write this crap?

We wouldn't even be talking about this game if they didn't make lots of money from their gacha monetization.

Right now there are suits in zoom meetings figuring out how to add gacha systems to their PC games.

This could go down in history as the 'just the typ' game that brought gacha monetization to PC gaming.

Anyone in that other EA thread wanting to regulate loot boxes should be in full protest mode for this cause once that type monetization enters the PC genre it will make cosmetic loot box gambling seem like charity.

Gacha belongs in mobile. Everyone should be boycotting this game instead of recommending it.
On the contrary, gacha belongs nowhere. That's kind of why this game is a big deal. The bigger this game does, the more money it makes, the more waves it makes, and the greater the chances are that regulators will take a look once they realize the predatory impact the game has.

Because Genshin isn't Star Wars... it's not going to get noticed, unless it becomes "a thing" and it's slowly becoming such a thing, that it could push governments to regulate loot boxes across all genres soon enough.
And that banning will only lead to even more predatory practices. Never forget that these CEOs complain that games should be ~90$ while not changing a thing except even more gacha. So, I say that it's the best to leave few popular games infested with this crap so other games don't have a lot of it. Hopefully. /meh

Word on the street (though I haven't attempted to confirm it) is that they already plan on combatting the slot machine loot box by giving players the option to select a character every 10 picks.

That in itself would be their way of combatting the "slot machine" stigma, and probably would alleviate the fears from many that this is nothing but GACHA cash grab nonsense

Though it's still gacha cashgrab nonsense, but at least you're guaranteed a character you want after.. what.. like.. 15 dollars? With 5 star characters available for pick after 100 pulls?

Still cash grabby, but just slightly less so.

People with gaming addiction have been literally killing themselves and others since the 1900's well before people started hating gacha. Are you saying that the European Union is more concerned about peoples spending habits then murder ?

I don't care for a lot of the kinds of gacha systems in games and more then support more regulation or removal of them if it was done right.  But have the balls to say you don't like them and want them removed for that reason there is nothing wrong with that. Instead of hiding behind the excuse that your trying to protect all of the children and mentally unstable people of the world.

Aside from rewarding players better for exploration. The only thing taken from genshin impact that could be applied to mmo's is that good guys finish last. The elemental system and solid object physic's are enjoyable but you can't use them in a mmo's because of trolls sadly.

It' won't. You have to keep in mind you need like 5-6 copy's of the same character. People are spending thousands of dollars and still have a chance to no unlock all of a characters skills and passives. That's just one character in a game designs around you using 4 and a weapon for each of them that is the gacha system as well.

You can not spend nothing on the game and still have a blast if your a explorer type of player. But if you want to play a specific build and min/max it the price becomes absurd.

While Gorwe's post is a bit exaggerated it's true.

They used the same mechanic's in pay2win upgrading gear. People went up in arms over pay2win. So shady developers changed the mechanic's to pay for convenience. Which means you start off with 5 inventory lots and they design mobs to drop a crap ton of trash loot. Or they make a single level of progression take 6 moths to a year if you do not buy exp boosters.

Better yet they take players feed back about costumes and none combat pets as ok to sell. Then make your end game gear look like a god dam green chicken if you don't have a costume to hide it. Make those pets and costumes with effects that allows you to progress 50% or more faster then every one else. All the while saying it's not pay2win we are given you what you want.

You don't have to make good games in the video game industry. You just have to buy out or bankrupt your competition. EA and company's like them have been doing this from the very start.

Because they are making more then 50% of their profit from shady ingame microtransactions. They can sell those games well under what is needed to even pay for the production cost if they don't down right offer the game for free. This forces other company's to drop their game prices to be competitive and find some way to recoup their loses.

It's a nasty loop that promotes bad game mechanic's and practices but it works. This is why you have developers like Pearl Abyss being so successful even if gamers hate them. They can buy out games like eve online and still having the funds to developed 3 other games in the same year. While company's that choose to not use more shady tactic's often close down within a year.

Semi required gatcha at end game is a thing but you get 50ish hours out of it before it becomes too noticable.

This isn't a signature, you just think it is.

If the changes do go in place, it would make it substantially easier to max out constellations for 4 star characters. 5 star would still be a slog, but at least you have a guarantee you'll get one.. and the one you want, even if it would take you a long time or a lot of money to max them out. But at least you don't have to leave it up to chance.. 100%.

In that way it does fix the "slot machine" feature to the point it would be hard for a court to argue that you're buying into a system where you can't "win" like a slot machine. While it would still be a soft slot machine, if you're guaranteed a payout every 10 rolls and a jackpot every 100 rolls, with additional rolls on special banners...

I'm just saying that sure, it's still predatory, but less so.

Too many people just think "Free to Play" means that if theres any necessity to spend money, then suddenly the game is a cash grab.

I have played a few gacha games, and in some cases, I've even whaled in a few. RIght now, Genshin is pretty bad... but if they implement a guaranteed 4 star of your choice at ten rolls, it suddenly becomes one of the better systems out there.

I can't say for sure what will happen, but even if we pretend that genshin never implements choosing your characters, ever, the game is still one of the best by mobile standards, and probably average for a console free to play title. You could do worse.

just want to point out to the author and anyone interested, Genshin is not an MMO, it is a 4 player Coop max, by that standards Halo is an MMO, the pets are in the game as collectibles from events, but mounts are not needed as you can teleport and they are really close,
the problem is you are comparing it to an open world MMO in which this is an action adventure RPG with coop elements.
Also the gatcha system works fine, it is just no that used in the west as people see it as gambling gives the characters you have more meaning to you and ensures that you enjoy the game more with what you have instead of giving you all the toys right out the box and then you get bored of it, makes you always want to strive for it as a F2P, or just whale and waste your money if you are a Whale, up to you really.

    1. How to generate maximum revenue with minimum effort.

    2. How to inspire the masses to throw money at you regardless of the incredibly low odds of success.

    3. How to get your user base to religiously promote, excuse, and apologize your predatory monetization model to the unwashed heathen masses who aren't already tapped into that sweet sweet revenue stream.
How very ironic coming from a Fallout 76 player.  :D
