How Different Do Our Avatars Need to Be?

What I want to talk about is the colour of our Avatar names and titles, so Scot is in Orange and Legendary. I am starting to wonder, could this be putting of new posters joining or staying?

We certainly need one colour for new posters and say another colour for those who have posted enough to do their own threads but that’s all in my eyes. Helps with spotting the bots for one thing and doing welcome posts for another.

We sometimes get called elitist; I think we can give the impression that we are a club where only what the “top” guys say counts. Being welcoming to new posters only goes so far.

So could this idea be a runner, do you think such a change would really make a difference? I think it would at least go someway to making new posters realise they are one of the gang.

There will always be people who have been around for a while, and cliques in any social group, be it real life or on forums.

We have some people who have built reputations here, for better or worse, one way or another, spats, rivalries, and of course rampant egotism, a new person coming in, can see that as their window to do the same.

Personally I think a new person coming to the forum feels that it is wrong that in your 17 years, and 13,000+ posts here, that you earned some recognition, gonna wager they would not be the kind of people that would make good discourse anyway.

Bingo - they serve absolutely no purpose whatsoever

Would also like to see an option for users to hide the post count and points if they chose to
Yep. If the likes of Gdemami can be legendary, no one is legendary.

To be honest, I wish we could do more with our avatars.

I was on another forum, where you could flag your play style, preferred setting (fantasy/sci-fi/etc), Genre (MMO/FPS/MOBA/etc), so that you could make a proper presentation of yourself, right from the Avatar bar.

I almost kind wish we could link our steam accounts to our forum accounts, so we could show what games we have played, how well we have done, etc, etc.. that way, if someone says "Oh yah, XYZ game sucks" and you see don't even have that game listed as one of their games they have played, you can dismiss them fully as speaking out their ass.

It would be kinda cool, to know more about the poster as a player, even if I don't need to know anything about the person themselves.

But let's get real - the chance of this site adding any features is zero
The change I am suggesting would be a two colour system with no titles.

I can see new features are not something they would do lightly, but I am not sure how much change would be needed to keep white as "new poster" and change the rest of us to green?

I don't accept your reasons for the sites decline Remsleep, we have less posters now primarily because forums got steamrollered by social media and this site is quite specialised. A good reason for it to broaden the type of articles they do, which they have done to some extent.

I pretty much raised a similar complaint when MMORPG.com introduced the entire post liking system.  These type of systems tend to be divisive and are definitely off-putting to newcomers.  It wouldn't hurt anyone if this system simply went away.

Plus, there is always someone who doesn't understand the basic precepts of humor and takes themselves far too seriously.

I never paid attention to the colors and until Scot mentioned it had never bothered to put 2 and 2 together.   Just figured it was something you could change on your own like your avatar picture.   The only thing I ever look at is the post count and then only if it's an off the wall post / spam to confirm my impression.

All jokes aside, legendary posters such as Gdemami, aren't a good advert for the site. Opinions are good, disagreements fine, bullying and toxicity should not be tolerated or indeed applauded ( as it essentially is by his rank being legendary).

I mean anyone can get Legendary rank by just posting any old crap currently, there are some good posters, some who don't post a lot (myself included) but equally some posters who post the same old bollocks over and over again.
its a meaningless title that uses mmorpg gear rarity naming.

    Legendary/rare/epic/whatever- its all diddly squat

Nobody should pay any attention to this, if anyone actually puts any significance on the color and title - shame on them

The message and content of the post is all that matters
I agree but perception matters so much these days, especially online. It should not matter, but I think it may well do for many potential posters. I can't blame them for that, it is an assumption any of us could make though we might like to think we would not.

Very new accounts should have some restrictions to inhibit spambots, and I'd favor making it clear which accounts are still restricted and which aren't.  Beyond that, I don't care.

Why would anyone come and stay here? What exclusive content is there for those who stay?
For me as I don't follow any other 'gaming' sites it's news of what's new in the industry;  New games, New patches, content etc.....

And yes the free keys, contests are nice, but I've been around here since 2008 and just don't generally see the need to comment on much except a select group of things.

All in all I'd rather see a 'joined' date, along with the post count.

If you have to ask why anyone stays here.. when you are still here? That is like people that play MMO's saying the MMO sucks.. why the hell are you still playing then?

I don't see Avatar rankings doing any harm. It's not like they confer magic powers. No one has to bow or genuflect. And I have never seen somone be so simple as to claim "I'm right and you're wrong because my Avatar has a higher rank!" Seems like a solution looking for a problem to me.

And as for why people (me at least)  come here, it is a community of shared interest. If I want to talk about dots or nerfs or dps, I can't do that at work. Or with my family. It's nice to associate with people who know and understand your hobby. Besides, over time I have become fond of some of you. *Cough* Some of you.

that's why I'm here. The community that has grown from our interest in online worlds, no matter our taste as to what consists of the "perfect" online world.

    Good discussion and good people.

Not the colors that make me not want to read these forums.  It's the fact that everyone here is a contrarian asshole looking to score imaginary points on each other.  Its really douche chill evoking...

Yeah, I don't think the colors/rank system is a deterrent.  If there's somebody that looked at it and told themselves "well, I was going to become a member of that site, but since it would take me too long to get an orange name/title, that's absolutely enough to drive me away".

I mean, the chances that happened are probably a non zero chance, but even Delete, the person who is never content about anything but the very confused ideal of a past that never quite existed hasn't posted 47 different threads about the subject.  At least not yet. He's probably too busy finding a different way to word out Pantheon is taking longer to release than he expected.

I lost my old account from 2008, really didn't care so started a new one.

I post and read 99% of the time on my phone (mobile version)... so I don't even see the colors and other stuff.  No biggie.

If they're going to use a points system, it would be nice to have a posts vs points ratio, rather than flat out cumulative points. As it stands, you just have to post enough times and you'll eventually hit "legendary", but if the points were divided by your post count, you might end up with a more effective rating system.

But, mostly don't care. I do try to take the time to "react" to a post if it contains something good so that the poster gets some points, but I also use the reactions just as a way to say "hey, I read your post but I can't be arsed to respond right now".

    The joke's on us:

"Another interesting survey finding: both men and women increasingly dislike orange as they age!"

Why do you think Blizzard devs use blue for their posts? and while we're at it... that Blueturtle guy sure gets a lot of upvotes here.

"The most popular color in the world is blue. The second favorite colors are red and green"

    Coincidence? I think not.
