I've seen this thread countless times. Awesome movies for a MMORPG, best books, best IPs etc etc.
Now picture whatever awesome idea you have and put it through the modern MMORPG dev cycle with one of the greedy "triple A" corporations exploiting as much monetization as possible.
Yeah I love Dragon Lance, but if they make a game around it and I have to buy Kender top knots in the cash shop... hard pass.
How about Dune where u can buy spice with a credit card?
Even if they don't go full blown cash shop/loot box the game might as well be a storefront, you will get yellow exclamation points and do quest hubs because apparently that's all these companies can do.
I feel like anything I can imagine that would be awesome to play will be ruined by the way MMORPGs are currently made and monetized. Probably why all I'm playing are old MMORPGs with no cash shops. Also why I have zero excitement for anything new. It's all innovative crap with a focus on cash shops instead of game play.

Dragon Lance would be cool. As long as the story doesn't end the way it did in the books. Even better if it's a Sandbox. And much, much better as a Sub game with no Cash Shop. Though, honestly, I prefer Forgotten Realms. The Sword Coast, Faerun, Abeir-Toril. Those have the potential to be good games. If done right. If made my way.
Sandbox/Non-Linear > Themepark/Linear for one thing.
Already existing Tabletop RPG Game/Campaign Worlds, Historical Settings (and perhaps novels, movies, comic books, or other such popular Intellectual Properties) do certainly have one major benefit: The Lore & History for the MMORPG does not need to be developed by a writer or team of writers.

The Great Pandemic of 2020. It would be a pure PvP experience with resource gathering
I'm sure the families of the 295K people who have died would find this hilarious.
Way, way less than one percent of the population of the United States has died from this disease.
So only Americans count then?
What is the percentage of the entire world's population that has died due to the Corona Virus?
using world cenus data for 2019 and the number of covid-19 deaths suppiled in this thread the percent of world population that has died from covid-19 is:

A US Civil War or Napoleon era MMO that plays like Planetside or WW2 Online would be pretty awesome.
If you've never played War of Rights, you should check it out. It's not an MMO, but does allow hundreds of players to to battle at once. The rules make solo players ineffective as you are less accurate when not surrounded by your bros. This forces everyone to play using period accurate tactics.

This website just isn't the same without Bill. Every article for the past few months has just been uninspired. I miss you old mmorpg.com, maybe one day it'll be worth visiting again.
Bill left?
Both he and Suzy run Gamespace.com

I was watching the amazon series Vikings, and they had an episode that took place in Islamic Spain, el-Andalus, great scenery.
So Islamic Spain or just the mediterranean 1000 years ago
You mean the series that was originally broadcast on the History Channel?

A good time period for an MMORPG would be the 12th-13th centuries AD, age of the Mongol Conquests and some of the Early Crusades. Basically the same time period as Age of Empires II. But players should be able to play European, Middle Eastern, African, or Asian characters. The game could be historical or it could be changed into an alternate fantasy version of Earth.
Another good time period would be anywhere around 1492-1600/1700/1876 AD. Basically the same time period(s) as Age of Empires III & Europa Universalis. Again, the game could be historical or it could be changed into an alternate fantasy version of Earth.

That last pic,Ronin/Samurai ,i could definitely go for a ROTK type mmorpg but done AAA not some cheap global world view map movement. So we would move about the inner city streets in real time, see other warriors, store fronts with patrons.
We amass our own army of followers and as we roam the world we see invasions and can choose to stand and fight within that city/town/village or flee.We can setup our own camp, leave behind guards as we roam to harvest or trade etc etc.
Each player will be allotted a small region within to build .The world obviously could not hold high numbers but 500 or so seems legit.
Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
