Games have always been a social outlet, stress relief, and mind/memory improvement in every culture throughout all history.  As is all art.

Teens/young adults can get in alot of trouble with other things...Video games are relatively harmless comparatively.

I went from blowing $450 per weekend to $15-$30 per month.

What is the benefit of doing anything?  If you are older, have a stressful job and a family, it is a way to recharge and be a little more stable to face the horrors each new day brings.  Its my me-time.

In layman's terms, playing video games directly affects and impacts regions of the brain responsible for memory, spatial orientation, information organizations, and fine motor skills. The study also reinforces the claim that, like exercise, playing games for as little as 30 minutes a day, can improve your life.

I would say the benefit is the social aspect and sense of community. Also filled out the survey

Does anyone else think its rather strange that after gaming started to make more money than movies we got so many people telling us how good it was for us?

Back in the day it was anti-social, cultist, irreligious, made us more violent and turned us into criminals. :)

I'm a a bit suspicious as well, Industries are no good until governments can make money from it. Look at all the craze now about marijuana for example. Video and online gaming is now a multi billion dollars industry, you are going to find all kinds of experts and statistics

The benefit is what you get out of it for the money spent.

If you sit in your basement and play games 20 hours a day, then gaming offers no benefit (unless you make a butt-ton of money playing games).

If you play 2-4 hours a day but spend an butt-ton of money in a P2W game, then gaming offers little benefit. (unless you are sitting on fat stacks)

If you play during free time while still taking care of your real life obligations, then gaming offers a mental release from the daily grind, which is very beneficial.

The main benefit is it gives you something interesting to do and focus your mind on instead of important things so life goes by faster and this shit show ends sooner.

For me it takes me out of the anxiety and stress of my job and is a nice way to spend my time while I'm at home.

As you may all know, video games are often discussed in terms of their negative effects on players. However, I belief that games also have many benefits and can be truly amazing. In a scientific project at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media (Germany) we are currently investigating the positive effects of gaming. And we need your help! Have you ever played a video game and felt like what was happening on screen was truly awe-inspiring? Have you ever been amazed by something vast while playing a video game, something that stood out of your typical gaming experience? Then please help us with our scientific mission and take 15 minutes of your time to fill out this questionnaire. You even have the chance of winning one of 20 Amazon vouchers worth $20 each! ww3.unipark.de/uc/awe/ The survey is part of a non-commercial, scientific project at the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media (Germany) and we take our research seriously: All of your details will be treated anonymously as well as confidentially and are used for scientific purposes only. Thank you for participating!

G'day. I'm Jen and I run CheckPoint, a nonprofit here in Australia which connects mental health resources with video games and technology. We're super interested in the benefits that games have for wellbeing, as many research papers have already suggested.

We'd like to know if you've had a positive experience with a game, genre of games, or gaming in general.

I'm using reddit to get the word out that this is something we are doing, and to recruit for our active research survey on the topic which you can find at bit.do/checkpointresearch.

I'd really appreciate it if you could complete it and share the link around whilst engaging in some discussion about these topics here! Thanks so much.

According to me, it all depends upon you. If you are playing games for a fixed time (not the whole day) then it will help you to increase your IQ otherwise games can dump your mind.

I mean if you are playing them in limits then games will boost your mental health. I play games after reading their reviews from a reliable technology blog. It helps me to find a good game for me.

You always know that you have something cool and exciting to do when you're back home. You know that you have more choice than people who only read books or watch TV series. There're dozen of worlds in which you can get involved. That's pure magic
...you can say the same about crack waiting for you to get home, however I would hesitate to list it as a "benefit".
From an outside view no but to THAT person, they feel like it is.

I find gaming's largest benefit is being able to relax your mind from the real world, you will actually forget the real world completely. That can be really healthy for the person so long you didn't put something on the stove to forget ..lol.

Everyone at times has too much on their mind, sometimes something from work pissed them off, people walking down the street talking to themselves, driving while talking to themselves, going over arguments in their mind.Perhaps you are behind on rent, can't pay the bills,it allows you to just calm your mind and relax.

As far as use in military training, that is a huge topic and depends on the quality of the software to simulate real life situations such as weather, wind, splash damage casualties or injury, detection etc etc.
