Best quest you have experienced in a game?

CryomatrixCryomatrix Member EpicPosts: 3,223
Tons of quests seem to be like filler quests just for experience gaining.

But for me, the few quests I remember are what I call transformational quests. It alters your character tremendously and is fairly difficult to achieve.

The one i remember the most was the Lineage 2 quests to choose your sub class, it was a lot of fun.

Another one on a much lower scale is the Path of exile quests to transform your character into the subspecialty class as well, but not as much.

Any other thoughts?

I can rarely remember quests, I don't value story in my games and it's rare to find interesting gameplay attached to a quest. Transformational quests, as you explained it, are something I've never encountered. Closest I can think of are some quests in early LotRO that unlocked legendary skills, but the quests themselves were pretty dull.

So, best quests I have experienced in a game:

    SWG's terminal quests!

    No unnecessary story
Good selection of what I actually want to do i.e. choosing my enemies
Good rewards, in the form of XP and credits
Target of my quest only spawns in when I get close, so no worries about others ninja'ing my kills.
Very easy to team up with others, whilst you couldn't share quests, you could all get quests in the same general location, regardless of personal level/template/faction.

I spent so much of my time in SWG playing these quests. I loved squill hunting groups out of Anchorhead (for xp), as well as rancor quests on Dath (for credits). That time and those quests stand out in my mind more than anything I've experienced in a themepark.

Secondary vote: Sara Oakheart / Amarthiel storyline from LotRO.

The quests themselves were dull as shit and really frustrating, but they stretched from level 25ish through to level 50, and the final few quests had some interesting things going on, with a lovely twist or two and a custom instance at the end where we fought a nazgul. I still prefer the SWG terminal quests tho....

I don't ever remember the Lineage 2 quests fun but they were definitely an achievement.

Once you did one you KNOW you put in your time.

Bounty quests in SWG were almost always fun.

Enjoyed the Legendary quests in EQ and EQ2.

But one quest that really stands out to me was in Vanguard: SoH.

Had to talk to a wizardy type NPC in a tower, which led to kidnapping various people, and at one stage you kidnap a dwarf, and stuff him in a sack, then throw him off a bridge.

Really have no idea why, but found it really, really funny that you had to throw a dwarf off a bridge in a sack.

The one that gave me the greatest satisfaction was the ranger epic quest in EQ1.

The ones that were the most fun for me were the Darkshire quests in WoW. The story was fantastic.

the only game that had any semblance of engaging quests was the secret world and not a single mmo (that i played) ever came close to that.

vanguard- It's been awhile so my memory may be fuzzy but I remember a sort of twisted quest chain where you used some item on a guy and it accidentally took his soul but left his body, and to cover it up you put his body in a meat grinder.

Well as a DDO player, there were some great dungeon/quests in that game.

Personally, the Dreaming Dark series in DDO was one of the better quest lines I ever did, as it linked together several other quest lines.

Mob1: Is that Ungood.. the one who bested Sorjak?

    Mob2: Twice.

my favorite quest all time is The Aerlinthe quest in Asherons call. It was such a amazing, time consuming and tough quest to do back in the early days of AC.

I like quests that tell good stories well - not necessarily long or tough ones although that's neither here nor there for telling a story.

I have two from recent memory that I can think of and they're both quest chains not single quests.

The first is the Sith Inquisitor class quest chain in SWTOR that had some great and very funny twists and the second is the Wilderking / Wilderqueen chain in the Greenshade zone in ESO that has some feeling behind it and is told very well.

The escort the sleepy nightelf druid npc in wow was funny, he would lay down and sleep during it and you had to blow a horn in his ear to wake him up and continue journey.

I seem to remember the one on Dragon Age Origins with Branka and the Anvil of the void. Really liked that one.

There is one in oblivion where you go to a small backwater town to look for this young woman and uncover the secrets to the town. That's a very good one.

Enjoyed some of the class quests in SWTOR.

GW2 when they asked you some questions during making your character. One regret was never knowing what happened to your parents, years later I did the quest and found their graves.

Aion, becoming a Deva and getting your first set of wings, thus being able to finally glide and fly.

ESO, enjoyed the main story quest and the vamp quest.  Also enjoyed the quest in which you caught the werewolf and he asked you to if he could say bye to his family, hint: just say no!

SWG, loved doing quests to get access to Jabba himself.

    Lots more in other games...

And of course there is this famous quest:

ARTHUR: Go and tell your master that we have been charged by God with a sacred quest. If he will give us food and shelter for the night he can join us in our quest for the Holy Grail.

GUARD: Well, I'll ask him, but I don't think he'll be very keen. Uh, he's already got one, you see?

    ARTHUR: What?

GALAHAD: He says they've already got one!

ARTHUR: Are you sure he's got one?

GUARD: Oh, yes, it's very nice

There was this one quest in WoW where you had to collect 10 bear asses, but only 1% of bears in WoW have an ass. It was very exciting.

"Will this be the time I get a bear ass? I've outleveled the quest by 9 levels and I still don't have as many as I need, but I'm committed to this epic endeavor and won't stop until I have all 10 bear asses."

Then finally I got all 10 bear asses, turned in the quest and got 0.5% of a level and 3 silver. It was an epic journey I will never forget.

One of my most memorable quests in TSW was the one where I fell asleep and when I woke up I had somehow beaten the quest........It involved NPCs helping in some sort of battle and I slept through the whole thing......

I did love the Norn Personal Story in GW2, where you get drunk at a MOOT and steal a Charr car. That was hysterical.

The best quests came from the most story driven MMOs, those two elements go hand in hand. Lotro, SWtoR, TSW.

Not a MMO, but the title and OP didn't specify MMOs.

The Bloody Baron quest chain in The Witcher 3. Just... oof.

This made me think of GW2 Claw Island, Vigil.

Warmaster Forgal: My Father was the last of the Dolyak Shaman, and you Monster, will not make me Kneel.

I mean that part hit all the feels when I played through it.

Later, I learned that the Dolyak was one of the Spirits that died fighting Jormag and it just gave the whole thing a much deeper meaning.

I love it when lore intertwines like that

This was my first thought.  The dugeons were great and were a unique experience. . once.
Whenever we ran a dungeon  - if someone hadn't run it before they had to go first and make the choices.  We enjoyed them that much that having others experience them for the first time was more important than progress or farming.  I found every dungeon was pretty neat.  As a rogue I had my part to play. . loved it.

There is a quest in EQ2 where you have to kidnap a Goblin in Runnyeye then bring him to an altar in Obelisk of Lost Souls to offer as sacrifice to start a ring event...always loved that one for some reason, lol.
