One of Bradford's biggest regrets is not playing Final Fantasy XIV when it first started years back. He's playing it now and is enamored with the flashy Red Mage class, a Final Fantasy Class he's loved since playing Tactics as a kid.

RDM and Dancer are the best classes in the game.

I wanted to play the game till I got FF cross-play event with Behemoth in Monster Hunter. Then I've remembered - why did I hate WoW and Rift raids and quit the games soon after I've started raiding.

I don't really wanna rant on one of my least hated mmorpgs but, I see from the first and second image that they're still using that ugly gown-looking gear, only reskinned over and over and over for the last 9+ years. I can't be the only one that hates the armor design in this game, right? It just looks downright tacky and too over the top..

what? for example AF are aweasome (think class sets ) a red mage of course will have have the iconic hat , and look gorgeus , Ninja will have the mask and whatnot ...

there are ton of offsets that look cool and not over the top :D

    take a look :

    https://ffxiv.eorzeacollection.com
p.d the only thing i dislike is that some sets are the same for tons of classes but recolored (see casters & healers)

They need to revamp the MSQ, currently @ 47 and there is literally no side quests any where unlocked since I've cleared the maps of all the ones currently available. Beast tribe ventures, levemetes don't really drop enough XP for anything, which means you have to resort to spamming duty finder for dungeons.

You should play on a preferred server. On my second character, I went from 1-54 in 3 days only MSQ and Blue Quests. (I did skip cut scenes.)

I play on Zalera, and I get queues to get in game, most days around prime time. Tons of people playing!

There is a certain time of the day you get insta queue as a dps. Usually on weekends and usually right now(ish)

Every class feels sameish. 1,2,3 throught hp padded baddies. Nothing feels skillful. I can be a healer. Boom. Done, feels no different than any other wow like game. In Tera healing at least felt unique enough from being another class.
Story nothing to write home about.
Graphics , some look like pooped pudding, some maps look nice. Everything generally just feels like a big boi in diapers said " I put ff thing here for westerners. Look. Chocobo hurt your hurt" killing anything original and brave enough to be different, yet felt FF.
But hey, it's not gw2 so ok

I can only assume you made it to like level 30 before quitting? The classes are really boring until around 65-70 (a major fault with the game imo) when they have enough buttons and mechanics to keep you busy. Some of the classes at 80 are actually skill/mechanic/positional bloated imo and even with the juicy 2 to 2.5s gcd there are so many off gcd skills and other things to monitor including the boss mechanics that you can feel overwhelmed at times. They left a few jobs pretty basic though and they're never that taxing to play, like RDM and DNC. That said, the only job that's even remotely close to your 1,2,3 description at max level is Dancer and even it has multiple other things to do any monitor so really nothing even partially resembles your description of combat.

"Sensing this, we made the decision to get one of the boosts to level 70 and immediately become a Red Mage, or in his case, a White Mage. I also bypassed the Realm Reborn and Heavensward stories, instead relying on the cutscenes in the game and recaps online to catch up like I did with Legion previously."

Either the MMO is good enough you want to play it or you might as well play something else. Buying your way to higher level inevitably means you are closer to end game which MMOs struggle to make as appealing as levelling to top level. So you are buying to have a worse game experience.

A lot of FFXIV players do it though. Long term ones even.
SE makes crazy money off their boosts and story skips. Granted, for a first time player I kind of ask myself why they're even bothering to play such a heavy story focused MMO if they're just going to skip the main thing the game is about... :|

Rdm is my favorite class in ffxiv to play.

Unfortunately it is also one of the weakest in terms of dmg output and team dmg increase. So it is bad if you are going for savage/ultimate clears compaired to other things. Aka any serious static group will more then likely ask you to play Blm or Smn instead if you are a mage as they both do more dmg.

Dnc is sorta in the same boat just considered too weak for serious raiding, but it is really fun to play.

Sorta hope FFXIV moves away from the mentality of using dps checks to gate everything at upper endgame, would open the game up to adding alot more supporting type roles if having X dps as a raid was not a hard requirement.

To comment on complexity... there is none. Every class in ffxiv is do your rotation, it is 100% the rotation on every single boss fight without change. Even with healers it is a rotation... as long as dps do not mess up you do the same dmg/heal rotation in every fight. There is no real thinking. Only thing you need to know is how to maximize the rotation while dodging aoe and 1shot mechanics. Once your rotation and squeezing the most dmg out of a fight is mastered you as a single player cannot improve anymore it is all about raid comp to get top parses.

Rdm and dnc are just weave in your off GCDs in your main rotation. Dnc buffs are part of the rotation.... so no real thinking there either.

The completely 100% scripted fights are one of the weaknesses of ffxiv in my opinion.

    scripted fights?
EVERY single npc in EVERY single game is scripted lol,how do you think they operate?I know what you are getting at,the ideas like every 30 secs this happens and at 20% life this happens but that is the way npc's are scripted, just some have more scripts than others.

The problem i had was the formulas used on classes ,like potency and the instance like content.Playing as ANY class just felt severely handicapped, then adding in the heavy influence on gear...aka WOWish design, again turned me right off.

When we played a RDM in FFXI ,you could really sense the freedom and ability to take on crazy tough fights solo. Then mixing in other powerful classes like the Ninja turned the RDM/NINJA combo into maybe the most powerful class ever in mmorpg gaming history. However over time the BST really became quite powerful, yet another class that could not be replicated in 14.

    Red Mage

    Tactics

    pick one.

That being said, DNC is the worst class design of any job in FFXIV, as it core functionality has very little to do with actual Dancing. Last time I checked I didn't see any fishing in the IDO world championships. Tanks do more dancing than any dancer.

The original content isn't the same as the more recent content. They add expansions over time like most games. So judging the game by the first part is false.

I checked out RDM a bit. I like the style of the Job, but I can't help but feel like something's missing... or I'm missing something. But I check out the rotations, and I'm following them so I know nothing's being left out. Just an odd job to me.

That said, I'm surprised (not at all, really) that only one person reacted even remotely critically to the fact that the author bought skip potions to bypass 2 full chapters, and to level 70.

When a certain other person, a YT'er, did so - at the insistence of fans who insisted "the best stuff was at the end", but still found the experience unenjoyable, people were lashing out at them for it. Declaring they couldn't possibly opine on the game if they skipped so much of it.

I've seen the same argument when anyone else is critical of the game and happened to buy a skip potion. Their opinion is invalid because "they skipped the game instead of playing through it".

In a thread about that event, I pointed out the hypocrisy of fans' behavior toward that particular detail. I pointed out that the only reason they cared that he bought skip potions was because his final opinion of the game was negative. He'd committed the crime of having "the wrong opinion" and had anything they could throw at him to disqualify it. Someone even suggested mental health as a reason for his negative reaction to it.

I predicted that if he'd had a positive opinion of the game, even having still skipped story/levels, no one would have a problem with it, because he'd have "the right opinion".

I'll even quote myself from that post:

    === BEGIN QUOTE ===
"Let's be honest, folks. It has nothing to do with what Peon did or didn't do in the game, how much or how little he played, or anything else.

It has everything to do with his opinion being critical/negative. He has"the wrong opinion" and must be punished for it.

If he'd played the game *exactly* the same way, showing *exactly* the same footage in his video, but concluded with "in the end, I really enjoyed my experience and look forward to continuing" - not *one* person would have had a problem with it. Not one person would be berating him for buying a skip potion, or telling him he "did it wrong".

Because he'd have had "the right opinion", and that's all that matters.

I'd bet on that, because it's how it goes. Every single time."
    === END QUOTE ===

Now, I expect people might go into all kinds of reasons why it was totally different with that situation. But in the context of what I'm discussing here, it isn't. It's exactly the same situation - people buying potions to skip content in FFXIV, and the selective outrage and double-standards in how the community reacts to it.

Well here we are. Someone writes a column about FFXIV, openly admits to doing something fans shamed and berated others for... and there's nothing. Not a chirp of anger or outrage. No one telling them their opinion doesn't matter 'cause they skipped content. No one telling them they're playing the game wrong.

And why? Exactly what I said in that quote... This author happens to have a positive opinion of the game. They have "The Right Opinion", and that's all that matters.

I can't even say the hypocrisy is suprising or shocking. It's entirely predictable and consistent. Many FFXIV fans have their identities so wrapped up in this game, they treat any criticism of it as a personal attack and rush to "protect" it like some injured puppy.
  • WizardryWizardry Member LegendaryPosts: 19,332
If he finds the RDM in 14 to be really good then he definitely missed the boat on FFXI's RDM which was 10x better than ANY class within FF14.

The problem is just look around at all the threads. There seem to be obvious trends, perhaps legit but often seem sketchy.Like the every week thread of GTA online advertising their cash shop, how does that deserve to be an actual thread?Or like how we see so many meaningless ESO threads all of a sudden and of course the many FF14 threads that imo seem more like endorsements than legit "opinion" articles.

This site really went downhill because it TRIED to deceive all the readers with so many non legit threads it made it VERY tough for readers to decipher real from fake.So is this guy being real, perhaps, maybe not.

Then again ,i seem to have different evaluations of games than others but i am also trying to look at games objectively and not as a fanbois and by breaking down the various games design structures and
the various systems within.I look at a game like FFXIV through the eyes of a FFXI player because it allows me to decipher the changes and decisions made,i see BOTH the positive change and the bad direction in changes.

The verdict is that mmorpg game developers are just NOT good at their job, they often come close, but a whole heck of a lot of hit n miss.I am more than certain devs see their own mistakes and flawed designs but cost and time will not allow things to be better but instead only good enough to SELL the product.

For myself FFXIV could still be the best mmorpg ever made but would take some work but still AS IS,is better than most of the rest but not good enough for myself to warrant playing it or to enjoy ANY of the classes/jobs.

Never forget 3 mile Island and never trust a government official or company spokesman.
