For me it means it is more complex and has more options for weird builds that interest me and character building options. They have a lot of abilities tied to skills, twice the amount of stats as UO, and a lot of other meaty differences. Its a much heavier system.
I prefer heavier systems. I did not think U7 was a good game because its rpg system was so streamlined and lite, I think U8 and U9 barely qualify as rpgs. I prefer the two Buck Rogers games to all the other gold box engine games. I preferred Darklands and Realms of Arkania to U7 and UU. Etc. I like heavier systems with more complex character building. More complex and heavier doesn't translate to more popular or acclaimed. Its just my preference. It always has been and always will be.
Except that's not happening. There is no huge outrage. They're inflating what a few mouthy people may have said on some topic somewhere on the internet at some point. This is what people do now, create an artificial bogeyman and manufacture a big fight where there isn't one. If those indie projects ever make a decent superhero game you know everyone that loves those will play it.
