If they turned Witcher into an mmorpg would you play it?

I would try it, but highly doubt it would be better than the single player trilogy.

Gameplay is important. But gameplay without a convincing, living world and a compelling story is just Pac Man (which is a fun game mechanically, but with no lore).

this is most likely the best thing I will read today. What a way to start the Holidays!!!!  <3

Honestly, for me The Witcher series was one of those I'd prefer to read/watch vs actually play. Of course I showed my support for the franchise by buying all the games, but I never really cared for the games. ::prepares to be stoned::

That's a very dark and twisted view on Pac-man...  (though it made me curious on the dad's opinion about Centipede, with all the mushrooms and splitting it just making the task even more challenging, etc. )

I prefer the Pac-man explanation version of Dave O. Screed (editor of Weird Non-fiction magazine) about the conditioning, since it sounds more logical, and plausible :)

Why not? MMO's like this are about living in the world, and the Witcher world is pretty cool. But if you couldn't play as a Witcher....what's the point?

I would be interested and give it a try, but it ultimately depends of whether it meets my expectations. Just having "The Witcher MMORPG" name would not suffice.
  • SovrathSovrath Member LegendaryPosts: 32,013
You couldn't play as Gerald or Ciri obviously you would do the elf, dwarf, human adventurer thing.  But they could have cutscenes throughout that you could choose to activate at your convenience where you either helped the Witcher characters or played as them for a bit.  If they did a Witcher mmo I would sign up.  What do you think?
We have that, it's called ESO. So no. I will pass on that.
    They're very different worlds.

If it is a good game, yes. It would certainly have to be very story-oriented and the benefit of a live-service game is continual updates and new content to play rather than waiting 4 years minimum between games. I think it could be a hybrid where you can opt to share the world with other players or not. The story-telling would have to be on par with what they provide in a single player installment, too so I don't know how possible it would be to make this game and have the best of both worlds.

Yup would definitely play. Would want to play as a mage.

True, but seeing thousands of witchers wouldn't break the immersion? Wouldn't make sense as an mmo if there was that many witchers around.

I'm talking out of my ass here. I know nothing about the lore past 3 episodes of the new series xD

Maybe the game would be an earlier incarnation where there were more witchers?

Or maybe it's more like guild wars where the world is your own instance and people can party up in towns? Not really an mmorpg but games that have "hero" people (Star Was with Jedi for example) seem to run into issues with Alpha characters.

Based on my extremely limited knowledge weren't the witchers hunted down? Which is why there are so little left of them? Wouldn't an mmorpg in the past be drastically different (more pvp oriented than monster hunting)?

I do know at one point they were disliked and shunned. But I believe there are so few of them because they lost the ability to make more (?)

Also, there can be pve hunters. Look at Assassin's creed Odyssey for npc's that hunt you down (one of the better features of that game.)

If it turned out another single player game-like progression with online components a la SWTOR, better leave the game as pure single player.

My knowledge is coming from 3 episodes of the netflix series so forgive me if i'm wildly inaccurate. In the series at least the elves mention how humans where intimidated by them using magic so they thought them, and as payment for their kindness as usual the humans slaughtered most of them.

IF staying true to Witcher lore there would only be allowed 500 to 1000 withcers per server, depending on when the time period is. At worst you would have no more then 50

If done right they could have a very dynamic class system tied to the lore. You could start as a nobody and depending on the path you take as you progress you can become a Witcher and do what they do best, a female Mage (if sticking to lore, otherwise both genders for gameplay purposes) and be prosecuted by certain faction, a Bard, etc.

They could do something good, but I honestly think generic mmo mechanics would hurt a Witcher mmo more than the positives would benefit it.

Looking it up, they were attacked but even though most were killed (and some lived) none of them knew how to use the tools they had to make more. So they had all the equipment and recipes but needed someone who knew how to use them all.

At least that's one school, not sure what happened to the others, maybe the same situation.

In 8 years will we care about The Witcher series? Probably not...

Considering The first Witcher game released in 2007, The Witcher 2 in 2011, and The Witcher 3 in 2015, yes we will still care about the series in 8 years if CDPR keeps pumping out amazing games.

If you mean the Netflix series, maybe.

Also, if Sapkowski writes more Witcher books, ooff... CDPR would get their hands full after Cyberpunk 2077 releases.

I think 4 years between games is good time, maybe even 5, to keep wanting more spin offs after the end of TW3.

The world and magic systems (not just the limited magic the Witcher can do) are interesting and deep enough to support it. I'd definitely check it out.

Just don't tell me about it until it's a couple of months from launch. I'm totally burnt out on the trend started when KS became a thing of updates up the yin yang announcing the tiniest details.

No.  The franchise works fine as single-player games.

Only if some of you guys played too.

    Nope I wouldn't.
We should not ask for every SP franchise/experience to have MP, turned into GAAS or become MMO's.
It has a way of messing them up more than enhancing them.

I quite like my SP games and most wouldn't benefit from adding more people with me.

No, I would not play it. I'm completely burned out and done with the medieval themed video games.
