imageThe Outer Worlds Review - MMORPG.com

From the very first presentation of The Outer Worlds it was obvious to see that there would be a lot of the DNA of the beloved Fallout series involved. Fallout: New Vegas developer Obsidian Entertainment certainly delivered on that expectation. The Outer Worlds inherits the strengths, but also some of the flaws of its spiritual predecessor and struggles to find its own identity in certain areas despite the original space setting.

Still waiting on confirmation of FOV slider. Kinda scared TBH because no one is reviewing this on PC. Shades of the shitty port done to DA:I and no PC reviews before launch.

Good article though. Honestly kinda dampened my hopes with your Cons though.

    Not to nitpick but ...

"To give you an example for unrealistic behavior, basically all of the companions join your team in a heartbeat"

Is there a Role playing game where the characters don't join you right away if you want? I mean, "maybe" this can be explored but in a game where you have multiple characters, all designed to be companions, it might just be more work than not to make each one coy in a certain way.

It's not nitpicking, you have a valid point. Certainly they don't have to be coy, but it should feel at least somewhat organic in my view. For me, The Outer Worlds stood out negatively in that regard. However, looking at other reviews, I'm totally fine with admitting that in general apparently I had more of a problem with the writing than most other reviewers.

In adventure mode, many characters will not join you unless they have good reason to:

Yeah it has me wondering also. Are they going to lock things down to what a crappy console can do. Curious about the control scheme for the PC. Is it going to be a half baked thing where you are forced to use a controller because the keybinds are atrocious or can we customize keybinds to our own preferences, ect.... That is one of the big things for me personally.

ok fair enough! Probably one of the few exceptions though. I should probably add that "clear roles of good and evil" is a preference and not a con. There are many games let alone stories that have "clear roles of good and evil."

8 Seems like a slightly high rating for all the negative things mentioned in the article, I have been looking forward to this game since it was announced but some of these "untapped potential" things are kind of a bummer.

What about animations? In the previous videos before launch they looked extremely sluggish.

I strongly suspect, given this review, that you would be better served trying it yourself or at least reading other reviews.

You very well might not see things the same way the reviewer does. No to say they are being disingenuous,

But when I read reviews I look for very specific things. When I see things like "untapped potential" that essentially means that the reviewer has preferences that may not be my preferences or that the content doesn't present itself to the reviewer in a way that they respond to but might not be an issue for me.

Does clear good and evil bother you in a role playing game? Maybe, maybe not. So many role playing games use that. So maybe your are tired of it or maybe you like it or just don't care.

Also, I should add, don't look at numbers. Look at what is being said.

That's what I got from this as well. None of the cons actually seem like cons so much as very subjective preferences.

And that's the thing, reviews need to guide us, not make up our minds because we shouldn't think for ourselves.

Looking at other youtube reviews I get that the game mostly has positive feedback (which does seem to be the general thrust of the mmorpg review.)

We just need to listen to what is being said and apply that to our own preferences.

you mean like baldur gate? with there is severals chars and some would only jaoin you if you did a quest for then or would never because your allignment are oposed? or they won't join because they are in another faction you are enemy with?

from what I see today, is since graphics are the main thing, story and writing are being left as a 2nd or even 3rd hand they jsut don't want to spend on it, even more if they have VA, they wnt the VA to be used in the game since they paid him to talk

I still think a awesome gameplay topples everything in a game, but in a SP a good story goes a long way

I recall all (well those I remember) the companions in Baldur's gate joining you until you pissed them off.

The two evil guys you meet at the start, Minsc and Jaheira, and Khalid for examples. Sure, I guess there are others you might have to do something for but I certainly can't remember them.

I think meeting companions and have them join you happens more often than not in these games. Quayle too come to think of it. He just offers to join you.

"Obsidian draws an interesting, pragmatic take on the typical dystopia."

Which for me is why every Sci-Fi game, TV and film starts with a yawn. Outside of Star Trek Discovery I don't think I have seen anything in the last five years which is not set in a dystopia.

'Would you like dodgy corporation chips with your dystopia sir?' It is all so predictable, that's not to say this game won't have anything new, but you could be radically, astonishingly new by not being set in a dystopia in the first place.

I like the look of Outer Worlds, will no doubt get it (though it says on steam release is 2020 which puzzled me), at least it won't have 'relationships' and 'we have to talk' the other bane of Sci-Fi which every writer now seems to fall back on rather than moving ahead with a plot.

Why can't relationships be part of the plot? I mean, books and movies have them. And it's a role playing game so talking seems to be part of the whole package.
