It is kind of disheartening that we, a community with 600k members, can only muster this kind of response.

Might i suggest that we make an official statement, clickable from the "home" tab, to remedy this?

Never seems to work properly on my machine.

I got a quad core, and my CPU is runing at 15% after installation.  It was running at that, before installation.

How do I get it to actually use the rest of the CPU power that is just sat there doing nothing ?

  • OzmodanOzmodan Member EpicPosts: 9,726

There is controversy about this because of the wording used in the activation.  Sorry it is too vague for me, you will not see it installed on my pc's.  Something like this does not belong on this site.

heh i put both the cpu and gpu clients on my computer and i've noticed my computer slow down with just surfing the internet.... Nice program to help cure diseases and etc, but i'm not liking the affects. BTW with so many computers working for this, they must have folded millions of proteins by now.... and i dont really see much of a result of this. Is this really helping?

I do not Fold for the following reasons:

#1) I know any research to any new discovery means a group of people using such discovery to make money and not really benefiting the majority. This is true in most of the upper level technologies and discoveries found in most fields.

#2) There are folding places that will PAY ME for Folding. Why is being paid so important to me?

    Power Consumption and Part Replacement.

In order for a person to FOLD, it means using excess processing power. In short it means increasing power consumption and bringing your technology to much higher stress levels. This means lowering product lifespan, increasing overall power consumption. Sorry, but I don't believe in "out of goodness of my own heart" if I have to pay the costs and consequences of my actions.

The minimum required for me to Fold is a complete reimburstment of all Extra Power Consumption to the folding device and all power consumed by the Folding device if used for Dedicated Folding duties.

#3) Folding does not count as a Tax Exemption. If I were to do something for others in any other area, it would count as a tax exemption that can be documented. Time is Money and the Government recognizes that enough to allow people to benefit from investing their time.

I don't want to list more reasons, but I will tell you I have folded before. It is not a free process and the money spent does add up over time. The costs of Folding using a playstation 3 45nm versions left on for a year at 20 cents a kilowatt is

    .100 (100 watts) x .2 (20 cents) x 24 (hours) x 365 = $175.2

Please note this is the Extra Amount you will spend for folding a year on a PS3 if you own a 45nm version. If you own the Original Version, its maximum total power consumption is 380w. In short, its 3.8x this listed amount. Also this is assuming the base is 20 cents per kilowatt, which is too low. In an Electric Bill you add up the Transfer Charge and the kilowatt Base to get the TOTAL AMOUNT it costs per kilowatt...In places like San Francisco, it is 52 cents a kilowatt, Folding with a PS3 would cost $455.52 a year over there...Sorry, but I refused to let myself be used...specially to those I know who have folded and their PS3s have failed losing an investment.

Sure, its true that we can all care about protein folding to see if new discoveries are made to beating disease...but that won't matter when Corporations will control the cures themselves and you will have to pay the HIGHEST AMOUNT OF MONEY for a health plan and insurance along with anything else they choose to milk that discovery and slap all contributors in their faces simply because Stanford doesn't want to actually do the research themselves.

This is greed at its prime, being sugar-coated to look like its "goodness of the heart" when its mass population exploitation. Notice I did not factor in the Internet Connection itself. FOLDING is meaningless if you do not have an Internet Connection. :) That in itself is another cost...

I've been running Folding@Home for maybe 5 - 6 years. I'll be in the top 40,000 contributors by the end of the year. My computer is on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. My monitor uses more electricity in stand-by mode than that expended by having Folding@Home running.

Why do I let it run on my computer? I feel good about doing something for someone else with minimal effort of my own.

You spent more effort writing that critique then I have in all the time I've supported Folding@Home. I will continue to do so.

Edit January 31,2011. I've made it into the top 43,000 contributors. There are fewer people not participating anymore who can be passed by and more people with better computers passing me by.

I'd like to run this, but Stanford (like many universities) has a history of receiving CIA funding for various projects.  Any guarantee that none of this is being researched for offensive purposes?  Any guarantee that none of the processing power goes toward classified projects or projects that the University expects will be classified if results are forthcoming?  There is or used to be a similar project (I forget who ran it) that did put users' computers to work on projects with military applications, but also let users opt out on those projects.

I am pretty happy to see people still doing this. I started it maybe 7-8 years ago for testmy.net and was one of the top guys for years. I stopped when my CPU started being next to useless and GPUs took over. Excited to get back into it though and 5 computers I can throw into the mix here.

Happy Folding, and watchout for me :)

Hm, seems like my dads firewall is blocking it for me because it wont work. But well I'm going to take my comp back to my mom today and there we have no comp standing as a firewall just a router which hasn't blocked anything like that.

Edit: All my current WUs finish in about 8 hours on the PS3. My server is running constant WUs but it's slow in comparison. Once the weather cools down here and my electric bill drops back under $200 I will set the laptops and desktops up to run F@H as well.

The server CPU will be slower. Graphics processors are designed to handle the arithmetic functions that are used in folding much more efficiently than a CPU.  The F@H client for the PS3 uses it's GPU for processing. Your gaming rig's GPU will easily outperform the server CPU or it's own CPU.

Trying to run F@H on the GPU at the same time as playing a game is a recipe for disaster. Full screen games may cause the system to blue screen and restart immediately. Windowed games will run like shit and then might blue screen. Running it on the CPU at the same time as a game will vary.

The GPU client can even negatively effect something like scrolling on a web page. It's better to just pause the F@H clients while playing games.

    Fold on.

I'm a little surprised to say this but my Folding @ Home donor account named Gus_Tarball just entered the top 20,000 donor accounts.  I'd been folding for about eight years.

A couple of years ago I assembled a new system.  Since then my donor account went from the top 65,000 to what it is today.  Maybe in a couple of years the account will break into the top 10,000 donors.

Everyone come and join up on MMORPG.com's Folding@Home

    Download here: folding.stanford.edu/download.html

When you download, type in your name and use the Team number: 80427

This is MMORPG.com's Team Number, Make sure you use this number!

Please do this! We can all help!

What this does is it takes all your excess CPU power (NOTE: It does not slow down your computer AT ALL, it takes what ever isnt being used, trust me, does not slow down at all). With this extra CPU power it does equations for Standford University and helps solves diseases such as Cancer, or does research on important things like nanotubes.
