I haven't really followed this game very much, but it looks interesting. About all I know is that it has been in development for a long time with a huge budget. I have a couple of basic questions:
1) is the game available to play? Is there a free trial?
2) how soon before the game is released to the general public?
3) is there any indication of the how much it will cost? And how much you'll have to really pay to have a viable ship/game?
4) if it is still in beta, is there a way to get into the beta without paying a lot of money?
thanks in advance.

2) Well, honestly, your guess is as good as anyone's about a release date.
3) depends what ship you want to buy. Check the website for prices.
4) It is not in Beta at all yet, still Alpha.
We had Empires run by Emperors, we had Kingdoms run by Kings, now we have Countries...

You don't pay more once you own it, if the price increases again as it did before for both SC and the SQ42 split it won't affect the people who already own it.
I think both SC and SQ42 bundled went as low as 20-30$ back then, now it's 45$ or 60$ with the SP campaign.

You can fight, mine stuff, or be a hauler who buys stuff from one NPC and transports it to another NPC for profit. But at the moment the game is still very unfinished. If you're looking for a game to actually play right now, you should look at other games.
Some space-themed games that are launched and playable right now are Elite: Dangerous, No Man's Sky, EVE Online, Everspace, Star Traders: Frontiers, FTL: Faster Than Light
