Some basic questions from someone who hasn't been following this game

olepiolepi Member EpicPosts: 3,091
I haven't really followed this game very much, but it looks interesting. About all I know is that it has been in development for a long time with a huge budget. I have a couple of basic questions:

1) is the game available to play? Is there a free trial?

2) how soon before the game is released to the general public?

3) is there any indication of the how much it will cost? And how much you'll have to really pay to have a viable ship/game?

4) if it is still in beta, is there a way to get into the beta without paying a lot of money?

thanks in advance.

    1) yes, they have free fly weekends and such.
    2) Well, honestly, your guess is as good as anyone's about a release date.
    3) depends what ship you want to buy. Check the website for prices.
    4) It is not in Beta at all yet, still Alpha.

    1) Yes, a game package (45$) gets access to all available now.
Free-Trials are 1-2 times a year, this year might have one in November/December.

    2) The game will always be updated and the priority is not actually Star Citizen but the single-player campaign first called Squadron 42.

    3) The basic starter package costs 45$ and allows access to 2 play with the starting ships (Aurora & Mustang).

    4) Still in Alpha, Beta stage will only come after all the major tech feats are in place.

The rule of thumb is "If you have to ask, Don't jump in".

The game is coming along nicely and there's some fun to be had with what's available right now, bugs and all, but it's not a polished experience recommended for gamers but more a test bed for players game testers to give feedback, stress the servers and help development by breaking the game and reporting bugs.

With that said there's a 14 day refund window that can be used to play the game at ease and test the waters and if you don't like you can have your money back by going through the official proceedings. Dunno if it would be worth the hassle to you but I doubt it.

This video goes through all that in a more smoothing vocal way.

$45 isn't very much. You get a ship and can fly, fight, craft, etc? And what happens when the game comes out? Have to pay more?

You get a ship you can already do a bunch of the gameplay with. You just earn and progress towards whatever ship is your goal, the game still wipes every major update and such but it has the ability to buy/rent this ships in-game.

You don't pay more once you own it, if the price increases again as it did before for both SC and the SQ42 split it won't affect the people who already own it.

I think both SC and SQ42 bundled went as low as 20-30$ back then, now it's 45$ or 60$ with the SP campaign.

Hmm, it says I am making a contribution, not a purchase. There is no guarantee that I would end up with anything. Is there any verbiage that says when the game releases I get the game?

Also very important is to check your PC specs and compare with the community to see how much FPS you are expected to have. > https://robertsspaceindustries.com/telemetry

Yes this is not a purchase, you are instead backing the development of a game with the perk that you get to play-test what already is available to play. If you have doubts about the project or concerned about "losing" that money stay away from this game.

It's said you can do a lot with a starter ship but remember most people you go up against will be using much better ships.  Join a corp as there are always people looking for players to man positions and even let you borrow a ship.  Best thing to do, wait for a free fly weekend and try it for yourself, until then watch all the getting started YT videos you can because the game will have you asking a lot of questions.

It's a crowdfunding project so there are disclaimers as the product is in development. A game package guarantees the game access from the moment you buy it, that is SC's digital download.

You can't craft in Star Citizen.

You can fight, mine stuff, or be a hauler who buys stuff from one NPC and transports it to another NPC for profit. But at the moment the game is still very unfinished. If you're looking for a game to actually play right now, you should look at other games.

Some space-themed games that are launched and playable right now are Elite: Dangerous, No Man's Sky, EVE Online, Everspace, Star Traders: Frontiers, FTL: Faster Than Light

X4: Foundations and Rebel Galaxy Outlaw also deserve a shout!

My advice don’t give them any money until they release a complete and finished game. That should save you the hassle of having to check back for at least another 10 years or so

There's a convention coming up soon which will have a lot of info, free flight, and probably some sales. 23rd November.  There's a  learning curve so I advise you study first or you will be constantly posting to chat on what to do next.

All this means it's still a work in progress.  An Alpha doesn't get me excited period. They may see more money from me when they announce a beta and I mean for SC NOT Squadron 42.

I decided to try No Man's Sky and am really happy with that game. It's a bit on the simple side, but a lot of fun.

I'll wait until Star Citizen is a game I can buy and play. I'm not interested in giving them money with no guarantee of a product.

I think you fundamentally made the right choice but Star Citizen is a game you can buy and play. It's just not one with polish or persistent gameplay.

I'll share this video with the perspective of a No Man's Sky fanboy that recently got into playing Star Citizen and is in it's honeymoon stage so he's overly enthusiastic about it (too much really) as in he's overreacting the state of the game but nonetheless his passion is a bit endearing and maybe almost contagious.

With that said, stick with No Man Sky and don't listen to the guy saying "omg buy Star Citizen now!" but understand that you can buy and play it right now :)
