I too enjoyed that aspect of Everquest. I would work hard to gain faction and then reap the benefits of that gain in faction only to occasionally be killed by someone in the town who still considered you evil.

Don't care one way or another.  I'm siding a little more on not if it involves more complicated time management or worst limits who you can play with.  I also hope the complexities of design does not add another un needed year of development..... The more I think about it, no !

Something like this could take a co-op PvE game and divide it.... Why would you want that ?

Err ... occasionally killed by somebody ?!? I dont think I've ever heard of any game that implemented that this way. Would be really annoying for the player.

And faction systems, as far as I'm concerned, are pretty stupid. Oh you killed thousands of mob X near our city, a mob we dont like ? Sure, now we loooove you. Yeah, right. Thats how that works in reallife, too, doesnt it. Oh wait, no it really doesnt. People dont magically know all your archievements in great detail.

Instead I would prefer to see questlines. So you're a troll and want to enter that human city, you need to get official papers for that. You'll be given a number of tasks that show you're harmless enough, then you have to provide certain hard to attain items, then you have to pay a hefty fee as well, and only then you'll be allowed inside.

Also I would prefer to see that some things just cant be done. So those Highelves just wont allow you access to their city, unless you're a Highelf. Woodelf, human, dwarf, halfling, etc - doesnt matter, all stay out.

Likewise a troll settlement wont tolerate other races unless they are really strong. An orc or giant (as a race thats massive, but not necessarily evil; at least in D&D the most powerful giants arent actually evil) might enter, but the only way for a human, elf or dwarf to enter would be if theres a troll, orc or giant in the group as well.

You do get killed because certain NPCs never come around. They don't care about the faction work, they are on another faction and therefore all the faction grinding has no effect on them. Granted you can avoid them if you're careful but sometimes you could still be killed if you're careless. You could not use the main paths but had to traverse the sewers or other means to reach the bank because the whole city isn't one faction and your religion also played a part in EQ. Your religion could get your killed even if you worked on your faction.

@Adamantine you didn't play Everquest or would have understood how it worked there.

Why would you compare this to real life?

Of course they are aware because the people who live in the area mention your name and the authorities are made aware of your contributions. How else do you prove your allegiance if not showing the people that you're willing to kill their enemies. That even works in real life. It is not stupid at all.

Factions were excellent in EQ. Sometimes they led to comical results, like a buddy of mine ending up KOS in his home city.

I’m guessing you didn’t play EQ. It didn’t affect the ability to play together to any great extent.

I didn't play EQ, but yes. I believe factions and reputations are planned for this game and should work in similar fashion.

One of the best parts about EQ was the factions. It was fun to take your Dark Elf and go kill guards at the High Elf city. I used to take my enchie into a couple of evil cities and use the race transformation spells to move around (though occasionally some NPCs could see thru that).

I guess many of us (myself included) are guilty of playing this card. "Oh noes, they are working on 'whatever.' Now they will never finish teh game!"  Issue being, "whatever" is part of "the game."

If I wanted to play EverQuest I would play EverQuest.

And I compare it to reallife because its an idiotic system that makes no sense and wastes a ton of time for no good reason.

Yes, I was a Dark Elf Necro in EQ, I killed enough gnolls to be good faction wise for Qeynos guards.  Then I would have to watch out for Holly Windstalker out in the open area, and maybe a couple others that were on druid faction I think... I think I found something to get faction with them also...  Then all I had to worry about was a roaming paladin in Qeynos, because I did not have paladin faction and I don't think I ever found anything to get it.

I don't mind it, and I never played EQ2 (well did for like a week I think, but the wife didn't want to play it), and we are playing it now on a progression server, and you have the same thing there.  I have to worry about Freeport guards killing my good character, while getting quests and such (some I cant get).

I would rather see a detailed religion mechanic personally. EQ2 tried to do it but it fell very short of being worthwhile. Specific quests for specific gods, a tiered faction with your god that granted boons and banes unique to each god. It would b especially neat if there was a small chance your god, or a rival god, came down to smite your enemies or you!

EQ2's guild leveling system was done very well. I would like to see that translated into a religion system.

I loved that my Dark Elf Necro could walk into almost any city in the game. He was a Drizzt in the making.
