Where's the good christian "compassionate conservatism" on matters like this?  Does economics win out over compassion?  It usually does with conservatives.

    Hmmmmm, what would Jesus do?

What's the matter?  Haven't thought about that saying since your bracelet wore out?

It's a cold cold day in alaska; there are 6 men. Two of them is fully clothed and prepared against the harsh winter; the other four are naked and dying of frost. One of the guys with the clothes says to the other, "We should give them our clothes to keep them warm so they won't die.". "Go ahead and do it, but I'm not going to die with the rest of you out of fool-headed ignorance." So the guy that proposed the idea gave his cloak to one of the four, his coat to another, his shirt to another, and his pants to another. The five of them end up dying the next day.

The problem is the government has plenty of money for "clothes" to give to everybody. Sadly the government seems to care about things outside the country. Heck for the amount NASA is spending to go play around in space, we could be giving that so people can LIVE. These are the kind priorities our government has, its completely messed up.

Generally I don't involve myself in political discussions on the internet. Probably the most futile and damaging thing you can do to your intelligence. I'm involved in political laws most of the day, every day. And I don't like to take home the work, so to speak. Also, most game forums just ban religious and political topics to keep the peace. But the missinformation being thrown around in here is mesmerizing. So I'd like to offer some answers if anyone has questions. In here or in a PM.

    But just a few things.

Canadians and Europeans (and some Americans) Please note that what all you hear about the USA is not always true. Yes there are political and economic differences but remember that we are all human too, just like you.

    1) The US was isolated from the rest of the world in the most recent history, this is why the political system may seem odd and uncomfortable to Europeans. Even over on the continent by themselves, they were spread out even more making most cities isolated. The "community-socialist" ideas were not very practical in that type of environment. Think of the politics like evolution, necessity drives most of that. So the government was set up to give the tools to it's people to make their own way, mostly unimpeded. As the population grows and the global community shrinks, both US parties (left & right) are shifting more left. So you can rest your worried minds. :)

    2) Health care is not the greatest, but it's not as bad as everyone would have you believe. Keep in mind that most of the US's poor live better than the average person in Europe. Last I checked, the US is the only country that has fat poor people. There may be others now, I don't know.

    3) The US isn't as barbaric as most think when it comes to helping the sick. There are laws that all hospitals must accept and treat anyone that comes to them for medical help. They'll worry about paying for it later.

    4) It's not a perfect system, but can anyone honestly say that their country is perfect without any problems?

    5) Remember to be intellectually honest, and avoid brainwashing, ALWAYS listen in to the other side of an idea. Put yourself in their position if you can, and research facts. Don't believe anything unless you can prove it on your own.

And if anyone has any questions, or curiosities about the US that they may have wanted answered or cleared up. Please ask me. I wont sweeten anything up, but will answer directly and honestly. If we are to be damned, I want to be damned for what we really are.

Cool beans. /agree on the disparity point. Keep up the thoughtful processes.

That's a cool story and all, but I'll tell you honestly.  I'd be one of those dead people.  Call me a sucker if you'd like, but I'd rather die trying to help everyone in the group survive than to be the smug person who lived.  After all, what other kind of life is worth living?  That is the way I look at it.

I'll tell you a true story to illustrate it.

There was a bad wreck outside my apartment complex one afternoon.  A car with four kids in it had run off the road, hit a fire hydrant, started to flip and while in the air hit a power line pole.  When the car landed one of the kids was thrown through the front windshield.  The other three were still in the car but hurt very badly.

My roommate and I heard the crash and ran outside.  When we got to the entrance to our apartments where the wreck occurred we saw the little boy laying on the street.  He was covered in water because of the fire hydrant being broken.  Two of the other kids had gotten out of the car, but one of them, a girl, was just sitting on the ground crying.  The other kid was walking around in a daze.  They were both in shock.  The driver was pinned in the car.  He was in and out of consciousness.

I used to be a Hospital Corpsman in the Navy.  We were taught to always assess the area you came upon before going into the field to aid someone who is injured.  Well, dangling over all that water was one of those power lines that used to be attached to that pole.  And it was damaged, just barely hanging there.

I admit, I hesitated to go help.  Because of what I had been taught in the Navy.  But then my conscience took over.  The little kid that was laying in the water was face down, no way he could breathe.  So I went anyways.  I knew there was a good chance that line could land in that water.  But it just didn't seem to matter to me.

When I got over to the kid, I saw the back of his head.  His skull was shattered.  He wasn't dead though, he had a pulse.  Weak, but he was still there.  After I flipped him over to get his face out of the water he lasted about 2 more minutes before dying.

My buddy ran into the water too.  To get the other two kids who were dazed in the water to come out of it before the line landed.

I'll tell you something else too.  There were two people who were in cars that stopped and identified themselves as doctors.  One of them was right there with us.  In the mud and water helping.  He didn't hesitate.  The other, a lady, stood at the edge of the water, looked for a few minutes, then disappeared.  She left.  The lady who showed up, identified herself as a doctor ended up leaving.

I wonder about that woman everyday, and I wonder what she thinks about herself.  I don't hold any grudges against her, I feel sorry for her really.  Because I wonder what she thinks about herself.

I don't regret going in that water one bit.  I would do it again, I know I would.  Because I felt something inside of me that made me go in there.

So your story might sound cool but when you're in a situation like that, it hits home harder than you would believe.  And I think part of the problem that this whole healthcare dilemma is that it hasn't hit home yet.  People feel removed from it.  That instinct that I felt to go help just hasn't kicked in yet.

I'm just afraid of people who might take the same route as that lady.  How will they feel?  After all is said and done you have to live with your decisions.

Reavo: Your story was completely different from mine, and I fail to see how you even correlate the two. The math is just immensely different and really has no similarity to the parable I used which I'm sure you understood was in reference to the welfare/socialist mentality.

"Fear not death; for the sooner we die, the longer shall we be immortal."
