But can i play a dps warrior with a giant greatsword or am i relegated to tank duties? I've not seen this answered anywhere unless i missed it somehow.

Plate dps is my jam. It would be a huge bummer if i can't play as one.

Hard to say but classically there is a trade off for your choices. Defense and dps in the same build Doesn’t seem like it would fit.

Exactly. As much as I'd love to be "plate dps" why would anyone wear anything else? If the game made it so that "medium/light armor (and cloth should never be an armor) made your character faster/more nimble then perhaps I could see it.

There is way too much that goes into a proper class/combat design,it would take me many paragraphs to go through it all.
I can simply say that EQ1...EQ2...Vanguard did NOT get it right, not ever. Most dev studios like previous create the systems in way that feels handcuffed, like you are not even in control but more like your gear is the real hero.

So i will sit patiently and wait and see a more concrete explanation of their design systems,i still have a gut feeling that if they never got it right in all the past years, they are not likely to GET IT,this time around but let's hope.
I have no written off this game but i also am not some blind fanbois,i can only hope a few people within this team really have a good vision for design systems and not turn it into yet another gear fest.

Here is the big million dollar question, how does this team create interest without turning their game into another Wow 2/0 gear grind?Like here in this article,it is nothing more than  a small tidbit of GEAR,how about the actual game design systems that really matter?

I think at this point the only concrete thing we have to go by is the history of the designer, and in EQ there was no real plate DPS (24 box SK armies mass harm touching aside). There was in EQ2 but I dunno if Brad had a hand in that. I never got VG to run so I can't say.

As a current EQ1 player I can say there are plate heals (pallies are hypercapable of healing a group) and plate support (bards) , and SK put out decent DPS l, but no "fury warrior" type of thing. They made that class chain (zerker).

Interested in finding out tho. It might make me try a plate wearer! I usually play a smushy healer or support

RIP Ribbitribbitt you are missed, kid.

Disagree, i liked how Eq1 solved classes. Maybe it wasn't right for you, but i've not played an mmo since with such a array of unique classes

I disagree as well, bet I know which game did get it right though, FFXI by any chance lol.

Wathcing this game with hope that it can become a great Mmorpg. The success of WOW classic I think proves there is a market for "old skool" MMO design so this being billed as the evolution of that design philosophy excites me.

WOW Vanilla was considered new school back in 2004, I wouldn't use the success of Classic to gauge player interest and acceptance of "old skool" gameplay.

The first question is will Pantheon end up being closer in design to EQ1 or Vanilla?

It will be closer to Eq1 than WOW but obviously it's own game.

I wouldn't even bring WOW into the topic with talking Vanguard first. This is a whole different game but has it's roots in those two games rather than WOW of 2004.

So you say, until we actually get our hands on the finished game (in 2025) we won't really know for sure.

Well ... Vanguard definitely allowed dps in plate and greatsword.

My main was Dread Knight and I didnt ever felt the need to complain in this regard.

Maybe not exactly the same dps as a melee damage dealer class, but very close.

I once even won first place in raid dps, while being main tank and thus in defensive stance. That was with a pickup raid though.

I play a dread knight and always thought of them as more "tanks."

Though I should add that my first Dread Knight on the official servers only got to the late 30's.

I like the fact that the newletter shows the weapons look realistic. I can live with a little weapon enhancement in a fantasy setting, but I hate when swords are 9 feet long and 3 feet wide.

Plate dps is my jam. It would be a huge bummer if i can't play as one.
Not only has Brad never included a Plate DPS type, he's also completely ignored the Conan trope -- loincloth and sword.  Where are the warrior types that don't try to wear every piece of metal they come across?  An iron codpiece sounds awfully uncomfortable.

I'm ok with the 9' swords when they are in a setting that makes sense. So, Asian games are less about "realistic" and more about character and perhaps their version of a super hero/Villian. They are more fantastical/over the top, for a reason.

However, my preference for a game like this is more realistic. I don't like some of the more ridiculous weapons in Lord of the Rings Online (for example) but that has less to do with size and more to do with design.

If one really wants, they can look through these very forums to read any number of accounts of how WOW isn't Old School.  You can probably find more cases of "WOW caused the decline of MMORPGs" or "WOW is de debil"  outbursts than coherent thought here.  It's your time, waste it which ever way you want.  (Also, a sly dig at this site's near-nonexistent "Search" functionality, but no one probably noticed that).

That merch store is ridiculous when it comes to pricing. I know that it is supposed to help with development of the game but even hardcore supporters on the forums and the reddit are pretty upset at the pricing.

I actually wrote them yesterday and the response was ...

"Thank you for the feedback. We are evaluating the responses we've been receiving and looking into further discussions with the supplier. Thanks for taking the time to offer your thoughts!"

I was hoping others would chime in. Part of me thinks it's not so much "sell some items and make some profit for the game" so much as "donate to the game and here's a present."

Which I indicated in my e-mail.

If they lowered the prices they might make less each sale but more over all with more people buying.

Yeah I was excited by getting a shop but I already put 1k towards the game. I don't want to pay 40$ for a shirt (because I would get the one with the character on it) when I can get a AEW shirt for $25, go to Disneyworld and get a shirt  for $25, etc... I would pay $30 tops
Yeah, and the mug is $35 which is a big "no."

Even the mug I bought at Cirque du Soleil that was solid black but when you poured hot liquid in, it would then reveal a color scene cost less.
