No that's a separate faction, not sure why they call the thin bloods a clan even.

You start the game as a thinblood (one of many from a mass embrace), then pick a clan about 5 hours into the game (speculation is that diablerie is involved).

The way it worked in the first game, thin bloods were people who were turned without consent and left on their own without any guidance and didn't belong to any clan.  You as the player in the first game had guidance and was welcomed into a clan, even though the person who made you was executed for not asking the head of all the clans first.  You would have been executed also but he decided to spare you and provided guidance, for political reasons.

    No.. that would be caitiffs...

Thin blods are generally vampires that did not show any clan traits and usually could not create new vampires. Going by game lore they where too many generations separated from the first vampire. Each time a new vampire is created it get pushed further away, the blood gets.. well.. thinner. Less vampire magic in it. In this way.. Bob is generation 4.. three times removed from the source.. bob creates a new vampire.. it becomes gen 5... bob is still 4. the new guy.. lets call him steve. creates 3 new vamps.. they all are 6 gen... Steve is still 5.

and so on and so forth until generation 13 or 14 by the old lore... at this point you are getting close to being a angry goth with a sun allergy... gen 15 and up.. you are a angry goth with sun allergy.

5:th ed Vampire the Masquerade plays a bit with this but it is still a fairly good way to envision it.

Yeah, I'm making my way through it and remember the people on the beach who were thin bloods and "most likely didn't know what happened to them."

I'm just not clear what it means in this game where you are a "thin blood" but it seems you can pick the clan?

Thinbloods' vitae is too weak for them to manifest any of the normal abilities or features of their clan.  Fully blooded vampires generally regard them with pity or disgust and do not allow them to be members of their hereditary clan.

Vampires can "thicken" their blood to become as powerful as vampires of previous generations through a process known as diablerie, where they literally absorb the essence of the older vampire into themselves whole.  This is generally an aggressive technique and not part of some sort of agreement.  The essence is taken by force.

There's also examples of the diablerized entity retaining its own consciousness (if it was powerful enough) within the host, and I think in a few very rare cases the entity takes control of the host itself to essentially commandeer the body.

As such, diablerie would be a very interesting mechanic by which the player's Thinblood becomes a full blooded member of a clan, specifically a Malkavian.

This talk of diablerie; there is a plot device if ever I saw one as the Vampire clans would hunt you down if they knew.

I do wonder how they will play it, if it is 'you choose what blood you find in a chalice' that's a bit cheesy, but not sure how else you would do it. Maybe an Ultima style personality question and answer session to tease out the various clans:

What does anarchy mean to you? For our Brujah.

Have you ever howled at the full moon? For our Gangrel.

Would you you feel more combatable living, sorry working in an institution? For our Malkavian.

Do you get out much? For our Nosferatu.

Do you know what a soiree is? For our Toreador.

Have you always wanted to have a goatee beard and handle bar moustache? For our Tremare.

What is the price of a pint of milk? For our Ventrue.

Diablerie is often ignored during a blood hunt and sometimes offered as a reward by the Prince. Fans have been speculating that this is how it happens in the game since we learned that we start as thinblood: a blood hunt is called on multiple vampires and you hunt the one of the clan you want to join.

Saying that, diablerie isn't the only way to lower a vampire generation, just the "easiest/fastest" in-lore way to do it outside having Cain's thickening the player's blood (which is speculated to be what happen in BL1 by the way). The other options are long complex rituals that only a few clans have, dealing with demons or drinking a bit of blood from an Antidiluvian...

A good plot device though, you were a thin blood yesterday, somehow I don't see your new clan welcoming you with open arms, you just killed one of them regardless of how much he annoyed the Prince. :)

    Vampire politics.

Sounds like the Devs may be into doing their own thing and loosely following the traditional aspects of the theme.  Gameplay and plot should be interesting.

If they opt for something like diablerie, they could very well write a narrative that sees the player sending shockwaves through Kindred society.
