This looks very exciting. I've never tried VR before but I think it would be great if it develops well.

A lot of my friends who are super into VR are getting this, looks like Valve is impressing the current market. Not sure how it will fare for people who aren't in the market yet, as the entry price is still extremely high.

Yeah $999.00 for full kit is still more than I would be willing to pay to get into VR. I could buy a lot of games for that. The headset seems like it would only be nice for games you can use a steam or xb controller in, still a bit steep.

I would also say, being someone who owns an HTC Vive, to try out their system before buying it.

The HTC Vive is great but I can only do it for short amounts of time before I get nauseous. Maybe they've worked to mitigate that, who knows, but no reason to spend a lot of money for something you'll rarely use if money is a concern.

Have you tried Sea-bands? They help with motion sickness. VR messes with your senses. Your eyes see movement, but you body senses none, your brain sends message to your stomach that your might be poisoned so end result is nausea. Definitely check them out if you haven't already.

    I'll do my usual.

Wait for reviews to come out, check it out before buying, and then wait for a sale . . .then if all checks out, I buy it.

Still need a "robust" system to support it?

VR is a LOT of fun. However, it will only take off if this actually becomes affordable to the mass.

I like it, but I'm not sure that I like it enough to throw $1000 at it.  I figured it'd be $800+ again, since they have all those sensors and such, but it's still disappointing.

With the price point, most developers just aren't going to bother.  What I mean is, the individual finger-tracking, while awesome, will just be a gimmick.  I don't see developers doing anything with that, really.
Since the cheaper devices like the Oculus series coming out will be more common and widespread, the unique features will just not be utilized much.

Dunno if some people don't realize that the 999$ USD price tag  is for one Headset, two controllers and two base stations for tracking.

You can however buy parts piecemeal.

Also what the big deal about the software or AAA games...it runs off steamVR and you can run off linux if you want to avoid windows 10.

I do admit I was hoping the pricing for the kit would be a little lower though.

1340$ CAD is a tad steep especially considering we will get reamed with markup so it will most likely be more like 1500$CAD

Sadly, still no official announcement of the VR game they supposedly have coming out alongside it.  The one that is rumored to be a Half-Life VR.
I imagine they'll announce that very soon to help move orders.

Mind you, the rumor was a Half-life 2 prequel, not a HL3.  Also, still no announcement of what the other 2 VR games Valve is developing are.

Why do they insist so much on the 20° more than Htc/oculus? They never tell you even on the offcicial website the real FoV. HTC fov is 110°, so Valve's should be 130°... wich is not much of a difference.

I did notice that, but I'm one of those people who feel like I'm missing out on something unless I buy the full experience.

I'll just keep an eye on it. I wasn't interested in Vive, but this looks interesting and may actually help drive development good VR titles, which is part of the reason I've never gotten on board, all the games looked crap.

They are covering their asses is why.

It give 20 degrees more IF you don't wear glasses.  The extra FOV is due to two things.

    1. The screens are not flat in front of your face anymore but angled, kind of like the pimax, to 5 degrees.  This increases your FOV some.

    2. They made it so you can move the screen closer to your face (eyeballs) or further away if you need to make room for glasses.  When it's close to your face (no room for glasses) this increases your FOV some.  If you have glasses or set it further away from your face you don't necessarily get the increased FOV.

In essence you you don't wear glasses and keep the screen close to your eyeballs you will go from 110 degrees FOV to 130 degrees FOV but if you set it differently you wont get that exactly.

I just read it has godray issues.  I believe the VivePro had this too but that is fixed with a (mod) lens swap..

While Valve’s dual-element optics might be focused on a wide field of view and large sweet spot, it seems to have come at the cost of an increase in internal reflections (god rays). Moderately high contrast scenes cause significant glare which unfortunately detracts from the other benefits in clarity.

Most people's comments throughout the web are very disappointed in the price and plan to buy other things. It's going to be quite a niche product and IMO the feature list doesn't do the price justice

After used few of those like go and rift , i think right now i want a 3DoF HMD headset with game pad and touch screen control that can be use to play PC contents.
And if it cheaper than $199 then it's a deal for me .

I want something to replace mouse control while still have mouse control calculation .
I want something that i can sit comfortable using it , not stand up and swing my arms .
Do i need to use my body to avoid bullet and weapon ? no , i don't need , my body not super human
Do i want to use my hand to change the magazines ? no i don't want to .

i understand that VR can be use for more things that not gaming entertainment .
But as a casual user , i want something that can be use to play old PC contents like FPS games

    I don't need 6DoF or hand tracking .
3DoF HMD and mouse control replacement is all i need for a headset. Sadly after nearly 7 years of VR development , there are no headset like that out of the market .

What about the weight on the head and the headaches people say they get after a couple of hours. That's what's holding VR back.
  • anemoanemo Member RarePosts: 1,903
This still needs Valve to release some competent games for VR to be able to make it viable, not agonizing Hearthstone clones.

TBH it's tempting to get these.   Since I loved my Oculus for the half year I was willing to tolerate Facebook spyware with Admin permissions on my PC.  Echo Arena as zeroG rugby was pretty awesome to play, and beat saber as a check this out game for friends was awesome as well.

Though two games for continuous play and a short story game every 3 months was "okish" for the price of admission for me.   Though far from recommendable  for most.  (Did lose something like 10 pounds).

Practice doesn't make perfect, practice makes permanent.

I own a PSVR that I got on a special and I don't play it that often, I don't know that I really would if I got this because the games just aren't as good as their flat counterparts, at least not good enough to justify 1k price tag.  If there were tons of incredible games then maybe I would consider it but....meh.

This is the unfortunate situation VR is still stuck in -- the proverbial "between a rock and a hard place".

Developers don't want to dump a bunch of money into developing for VR because the userbase is smaller.  Gamers don't want to dump a bunch of money into the hardware because there's not that many great games, in comparison.

Honestly, I see buying VR as a lot like buying a Nintendo system.  You'll get a few amazing games, but probably less value in games than you spend on the system at that $1k entrypoint.
