A New Keyboard

I have some ideas but none match all my criteria:

Cherry (or equivalent switches)
Full keyboard; Numpad function keys etc.
Spill proof. Not using a plastic cover.
Backlighting preferred but no LED light nonsense. Yes I know you can turn it off, this is the wish list bit.


Thanks for any ideas.

    If you are looking at e.g. Cherry keys I suggest you do a little research into the various types of Cherry keys. They are identified by "brand colour" - there are variations in noise, how positive they are, how "quick" they are etc. Different keys work better for different people / uses. Gaming keyboards tend to default to "Red" (from memory) but red may not be best for you. And usually you can get most keyboard in different key "brand colours" - black, blue, brown etc. Or with terms like "silent". A lot depends on your typing and what feedback you want, a positive feel when you press, an audible click etc. 

    If you have a local "specialist" store maybe ask them if they have one of Cherry's samples - which has one of each type of their keys on it - and if they do maybe call in to try them out.

    From what you are saying I will have a try at finding somewhere to try Cherry types out would be a good idea, I have had them before and think they were Red. I have used Scan before in fact, they are rather good, very professional.

    Most of the review lists I have looked at seem to all be LED madness, but I will have another look for gamers who don't need a light show. :)

    I've had good luck with Corsair K68. 

    It is LED, but monochrome. Can get it with just about any type of Cherry switch you like.

    I have Speed switches - they are almost too twitchy for me, they actuate at about 25% depression, but they have a nice even press with the resistance I like. My wife has Browns , they are loud but she likes them.

    Full size, no macro keys, does have multimedia control and 1 USB port.

    The K68 is also supposedly spill proof. I've never tried it. These guys did, and it seemed to work.

    Razor Blackwidow Ultimate is also super spill proof and mechanical. It's also very RGB

    I am looking for a top range keyboard, but as soon as you put the word gamer in the title of anything it costs go to into orbit. But I do like the best. :)

    I have looked at the corsair range, may get one and just put up with the LED's or use software (Some don't seem to have any) to sort that. I am not keen on loud clicks so already realised I need to steer clear of Browns, I may just go for Reds.

    Will keep an eye on Kailh switches as well, outside Cherry my knowledge of switches is zero.

    I believe blue switches are the loudest (Have one myself). If you're by yourself you get used to it, but others might hate it xD Speaking through experience.

    Thanks, I will go through this thoroughly as I do with anything I am buying for my PC, but sometimes I do wonder: I am just buying this right, not making it? :)

    Cherry do do Silent keys. This keyboard comes with Red keys for example but is also available with Silent switches. Manufacturer refurbished options are available as well.

    As noted above though there are other makes available - including those by big box manufacturers for e.g. Dell Alienware - if you want to expand your search.

    If you are into fantasy genre games, then maybe something like The Diviner Keyboard or The Seafarer Keyboard might be cool to have. B)

    Those ones have Cherry MX switches.

    I use the Corsair K65 with red switches. I prefer the backlight and aluminum body which is easier to clean. Even though it doesn't have the click on depression and a low depression distance, it still quite audible when you press a key compared to a dome designed keyboard.

    I second the G910 as far as feel goes. I've used Kailh blues, Cherry Reds and Browns. The Romer-Gs just feel the best for me. Not too loud either. Full keyboard. Nice backlighting. 

    Not spill proof though. Not sure how spill resistant it is either as I've never had the misfortune.

    Best of luck. There is no shortage of keyboards to wade through. I would definitely try to find a local store that carries a few just to get an idea of the different travel distances and clicks on different color model switches. If not, try to go through the link above and maybe see some videos/reviews of them. Once you have a good idea which switches you want you can start looking for the chassis to carry them.

    I had a Logitech G610 once upon a time as well. I liked the way it typed - better than the Cherry Speed switches I have now in my Corsair.

    And... the cat yacked on it. Killed the keyboard. Only reason I didn't get another was because the Corsair was on sale at the time I bought it...
