Fans of PC Gaming and MMOs are likely already familiar with Black Desert Online - one of the best looking MMOs to hit the genre in quite some time - and have been enjoying the game for years now. I was severely addicted to WoW and then ESO so I never jumped in until I had the opportunity to review the recent release of Black Desert (minus the Online) on the Xbox One. I’ve spent a couple of weeks in the game now and I’m ready to give my thoughts on this gorgeous, but sometimes confusing, MMO from Pearl Abyss.

I enjoy the combat controller scheme on this XBox version versus the PC implementation. I love the ring menus. I actually have a higher level character now on BDX versus BDO, LOL.

Does it work okay on the Xbox one consoles that aren't the X? I wouldn't mind trying it out if it runs alright, but if it's going to be like 15 fps and look like crap I'll just play the PC version.

I can't say, I play on an XBox One X. Robert mentioned XBox One in his article. I play with 4K on and it doesn't bother me like it did Robert I guess. Maybe my eyes are too old to notice.

Can you use Keyboard / Mouse with the Xbox version?

Looking online it doesn't seem like you can, yet at least.

If you have the right setup - you can use it for all Xbox games.

Heck there are rigs for mobile platforms with full mouse and keyboard.

Yeah, but the XIM and things like that emulate a controller, which in this case would be not great. It works great for shooters or games that wouldn't have a different UI for M/KB

It's 30fps locked and draw distances are decreased vs one x. Lod bias isn't as high, either. I played on both.

I find it puzzling that games that aren't controller-friendly on PC decide to make a console version where basically everyone will use a controller. Black Desert wasn't nearly as bad of an offender in this regard as TERA or Path of Exile. But it leaves me wondering whether the console version is basically unplayable. And if the console version works well, then why not bring that to the PC version? In the case of Black Desert, more versatile control configuration options might have been the only thing it was missing.

My bigger complaint about the PC version of Black Desert is that combat was just awful. Mobs basically stand there waiting to die and don't meaningfully fight back, apart from the occasional elite that is suddenly really hard. That's fine as a brief introduction to the game, but it should still play like that several hours in.

The Achilles heel of consoles and BDO is performance at world bosses - it's an utter shit show, unplayable

Some of the worst rubber-banding you will ever see

In general the performance sucks on consoles for any content where a larger group of players is fighting
What excuse does one give when performance gets that terrible on a console game?

"Get a better model number bro!"?
"As far as the forum code of conduct, I would think it's a bit outdated and in need of a refre *CLOSED*"

The excess shaking of the camera was a bit too much to stomach when I played the beta.

    Is that still present?

Also, in terms of quests - do you have to do them? Like are certain systems or content locked by quest gates?

This game kind of begs (for me anyway) to just wander and grind/explore.

Something I think I got a bit spoiled by in ESO was that all content is simply there for the taking.

So with most quests being mob grinds, do you really have to do them?

I have it on the X (gifted) it runs great on the X with Gig internet.
Looks great and plays great. No issues even on world bosses. In fact it runs better than my gaming rig with an i7 8700K and a1080

Not starting any kinds of console/pc war, but there is something good to be said about developing for a single platform. Make it work on one X, they all run good. I sometimes wish we had that kind of stability on PC.

I much prefer the controller rather than keyboard for this game.  I couldn't get far on the pc version because of the mouse and keyboard setup.

I still consider this game to be a supermodel - looks great but tends to be shallow.

So they'll put it on XBOX1, but not PS4? How does that even make sense? There are more users and units sold with PS4. Guess I wont be playing this or Bless Online ever again :/
