Actually, that's a good approach in my book. There has already been too much released, and first impressions have already been formed by many people. If there are as many people whose initial exposure to Pantheon will be in Alpha, then by all means that first impression is on some critical path towards success.
However, I think that the people interested in playing Pantheon have already seen the prior videos, peruse the VR forums (as well as other forums), and have already formed that first impression that they now acknowledge as important. Graphics and animations need to be as polished as possible to impress potential customers. So much for placeholder and intermediated level graphics, despite the constant claims of 'game play over graphics'.
The dilemma of open development, I guess. And a fundamental problem with the whole 'Pay to Test' (P2T) model that seems so rampant in game development these days.
Kudos to VR for their communications. Other development teams could learn from their example.

Just be happy you're not rabidly following Ashes of Creation. Their forums have been down for 70 days, and nobody has heard nary a peep from them.
I think they miscalculated how challenging the BR launch was going to be. Understandable they are not in any hurry to restore their forums
However this is a Pantheon thread so better we keep the conversation on this project instead.
I don't watch videos so anyone have a link to a Cliff notes version?
They are adding chain mail bikinis to bring in the asian mmo crowd.
Half the video was about chain mail bikinis. Its crazy.
Ok seriously
Alpha is being delayed yet again. No ETA.
VR says it isn't due to problems with the game, it was more a decision to have closer to a launch type quality look in art + graphics. They could have proceeded under the same timeline as before, this "push back" is not a delay due to problems with the game, just a decision to have a higher quality Alpha.
Lets just hope they dont announce a 'survival mode' for 'testing' reasons.
Well a survival game imo is better than mmopg's if done right because it branches off in more directions, more game play options. Now if they announced a BR for testing,i would be running for the fire exits. Now in saying that, what i have expected MMORPG's to be in the year 2019 is exactly like a survival game, but all they want to give us is 1990's game design with newer graphics.
No developer should be offering any time lines, you can't be doing a good job of testing and fixing if you just set a date and stick to it.

I am not sure why they think they cant start alpha because it needs to look "polished" ... thats not what alpha is.
Besides I havent played any new game in many years anyway ... I dont have any clue what a good modern game is supposed to look like lolz.
About chainmail bikini: the only kind of character that needs that is a
Red Sonja type, and frankly I wouldnt mind if they'd get a real
chainmail instead either. If you need pixels to turn you on this is probably the wrong game for you anyway.
If the team wants to push a date back a bit in order to provide a better quality game launch for alpha/beta/launch, by all means please do. We have seen way too many games pushed out to the doors to their deaths over the last 5 years.
Its not 2004 any longer. There is tons of pre launch videos to be found, and people do judge games on this. It can make or break a game before it has a chance to get on its feet. I understand why they want to have a more polished alpha experience for testers. The game play will be all over to be seen by those not testing. People will judge it, and it sets the tone for release.
