I recently had the chance to go hands-on with a new RPG called Outward - another game that promises to immerse you in an open fantasy world where you create your own story. The interesting thing about the approach developer Nine Dots takes with Outward, however, is that you don’t get to be a Geralt or a Dragonborn or the Prince that was Promised. None of that nonsense. You start off as some poor schlep with not a bar of silver to their name, a load of debt, and the survival sense of a toddler.

meh is not like most of the games who says you are not the chosen is hard, is just have diferent gimmicks, and that make the story better too, after gods telling you to do they workd for the 100th time and being destined to be the savior/chosen for the 1000th time, you kinda like these, you are a random idiot, now get to work

I'm always ok with being the chosen one. I just want to actually do something that deserves it.

running to a mark on the map and running to another mark on the map and essentially being on auto pilot is not my idea of fun.

Oi... The survival system is mentioned as lite, but inludes chance of illness unless you meal prep. That's not survival-lite.

I don't want to meal prep in a friggin' video game. I don't even meal prep in real life, aside from the occasional grilled meats or crock pot recipes.

True, I don't meal prep or cook in real life ("eating out" for $1000 Chuck ...) but I do enjoy the survival mode in these games a whole hell of a lot.

So, was playing "Praey for the Gods" yesterday and I had no health left, or it seemed like it. I was coughing, limping through the snow and desperate to find an animal to hunt and cook as it seems that is the only way to get your health back.

Just then I stumbled on one of the large monsters in the game and had to back away so as to not engage it. I decided to limp back to an earlier area and "bam" these draugr jump out of the snow and start chasing me. I managed to get away, find a cave to rest by the fire and came out to find "one" bunny. It took a bit but I got him and raised my health enough so that I could forage faster and better. Finally back to health I was able to continue the journey.

To me, that was a hella lot of fun! Absolutely loved it. I could have loaded an earlier save where I was full of health but to me that is the point of these games. The survival aspect is another important axis of the experience and not something to be glossed over.

On a certain level it reminds me of being in Morrowind, flying as a vampire and desperate to find a cave before the oncoming sunrise.

I agree. The only time I even remotely enjoyed it was in Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and that's only because there are no hunger/thirst/disease mechanics and the cooking system in that game is actually pretty creative.

The cooking system is great but the weapons breaking so quickly is, for me, annoying.

Agreed, but that's another issue entirely. That being that weapon fragility systems are ass.

I'm ok with weapons needing repair and in truth like the mechanic but breaking after a two fights is just too much. Really annoying.

That's the problem. Weapon durability is only realistic it it's rarely ever an issue, and at that point, why even bother?

Certainly not as a money sink.

I'd say that adding a % chance that the weapon will have an issue or that it doesn't do the same damage is fine by me.

I was fine myself in Dark Souls 2 (Arguably the one that had lowest durability) with the weapon durability. Certain enemies had tougher skins and made you reduce your durability quicker, but there was always ample of ways to restore it.

Only times I had "issues" was during a couple boss fights where I had to switch to a secondary weapon. I would consider it part of the challenge tough, not a hindrance. If what you people are saying is true, that's quite terrible if weapons degrade that quickly.

  • AeanderAeander Member LegendaryPosts: 7,838
The only good implementation of "weapon durability" that I can think of, if it even counts as such, is Monster Hunter. Your weapons don't break, but rather dull, and you have to carefully decide when to sharpen them, with a lengthy animation, mid fight.
