If so is it just non selling stock they are reducing on hand quantities or will they try a relaunch of some sort?
The big issue is what happens to unsold physical copies - the stores have a clause that states "after X days all product in stores will be bought back by Bethesda at full original retail price"
So when a game is selling badly - companies must reduces the stock or they would lose their ass on those buy-back charges to retail outlets.
As far as Fallout 76 going F2P - not anytime soon, they are going to keep discounting the crap out of it to recoup the cost.
I personally prefer physical games, but i strongly believe that if a game cannot be played completely offline then it has no reason to be released physically.
Bethesda could have saved themselves the hassle you described above since it is unlikely they will profit from this game without a major rework or fix.
They wont profit....? The game is essentially a FO4 mod being originally sold for 60$ with a 200$ 'collector edition' that only provides a 20$ bag (including shipping) and 40$ helmet. Even if they sold this thing at 20$, they'd still be making a lot of money, not to mention there's stuff in their cash shop that costs as much as the game. This was the definition of a cash grab. They invested little to nothing, especially since they still had the FO4 'creator club' open so they could've just had some modders from that working on 76 the entire time and offered them 100$ with a copy of the game. I know people want to genuinely believe that there was a legitimate degree of effort that went into this actual game development, but there really wasn't. Unless someone can give me a really good argument as to why 76 had bugs that were present in FO4 (that got fixed by modders).
At this point Bethesda should try to avoid any more bad PR (if that's even posible) and focus on improving the game, like how Hello Games did with No Man's Sky.
If they manage at least that, they would heal a bit of all that good will they burned with this cheap spin off which would help them when Starfield eventually releases.
P.S: If they announce that they would be willing to change that damn old Creation Engine, it would help too :P
P.S.S: But now that i think of it, Bethesda is the master of hyping things up so it might not even matter at the end.
Yeah lol like Bethesda shines with integrity with keeping their word nowadays. This is how companies will operate during this era with all this "early'access" BS.
I mean, it will go F2P eventually. It just isn't for a while still, probably end of the year is my guess. The game is still pretty new. At this point it would be a waste of money to transition to F2P (As there is a cost involved) as the stink of launch is still going. There are still controversies popping up. While minor, they need to wait for the press to move on for a while before the change.
Maybe but maybe not .... lots of Bethseda titles people are still waiting to go f2p. Big discounts in their store - which helps to promote their store as well - perhaps.
Wait, what? Lots of Bethesda titles? So, ESO? The only games that will ever go F2P are service based games. They only have 5 afaik. ESO, Fallout Shelter, Fallout 76, Quake Champions, and Elder Scrolls legends. All of those outside ESO and 76 are F2P. If anything, based on their history with monetization, they are more then likely to change payment models then ever. Even ESO is monetized much differently. While not being F2P, it still changed models completely. Fallout 76 really only has the F2P option considering they aren't really going to have any substantial ongoing support like a real MMO has.
Also, the only reason Bethesda even has a launcher is for their games. It is not really a storefront in the Steam / Origin / Epic sense. You won't see any non-Bethesda titles on there. Hell, you don't even see all Bethesda titles on there.
They basically have 2 options here: Stop supporting the game or change payment models. (likely to f2p) Considering how much they have to prove; I would be pretty shocked if they stopped supporting the game completely.
It's not going f2p, it's going to be abandoned because the company will start development of "Fallout 77" almost immediately after release - like it happened with The Division and Destiny after less than stellar releases.
Division got immensely better and division 2 isn't even out yet ???
Ultimately the switch only matters to the people that purchased the boxed version of the game. Perhaps they were so few, that Bethesda feels that they can get away with alienating them in favor of a new system.
The twist is that the people who bought the boxed version are the more avid fans and believers of Bethesda.
I'm pretty sure Bioware/EA once denied that too. Although they were more clever with their wording.
If this one goes F2P in a month or two, then that's a pretty boldfaced lie right there.
Well Zenimax denied that ESO was going FTP a few months before it did as well, so who knows. The pulling from the shelf doesn't raise that big of a red flag as the first month of the year is the normal time for brick and mortar stores to start sending back excess copies.
Yes, and some of us even enjoy it. It's a decent waste of time like most other games. The biggest negative I have with the game are the random 'no response' and server disconnection events.
Working as intended. This is what makes it a true Bethesda experience!

I foresee this in an upcoming humble bundle. If they dont make it f2p with cash shop and add stuff to it soon, it will be a financial disaster, and not sure they would be willing to give up on it that easily. If it doesnt get a population, it kind of has no choice but to go f2p.
