FFXIV, i find it a much better game. Community is so much more mature and friendly. I can finally tank end game content without being yelled at or getting kicked by a simple mistake. :)

Tho i'll return for allied races, cause i've put so much time in rep grinding and don't want to feel like i wasted time doing so.
Honestly that's not a good part of the "hardcore" community of FFXIV if you can't do your job you should be yelled at, everyone else is doing theirs.  I like to think of FFXIV as the cuck community.  "It's ok you'll do it next time" mentality.  By all means if the entire group is learning something that's different but I have no patience for screw-ups when you run it so damn often nor should anyone for that matter.  If you are in the top tier you should be held to a high degree of success and that just doesn't seem to be common here.  PUG not included, we all know the hit and miss with that crap, if I PUG up I'm already in the mindset I'm going to have a miserable time.
Join a guild, but with that toxic mentality you will only fit in with other jerks.
Let me ask you, if you fail to do your job at work, does everyone pitty you and you go about your day or do you get fired?

It's no difference, you can call people jerks all you want, it's fuckin reality son.

Nothing toxic about it, your goals don't align, you don't want it bad enough.  It's no different than any sports organization.  Someone has to take the fall (RIP Cody Parkey).  In a world where we don't hold anyone accountable is exactly why the world is going to shit fast.
No it's not reality. The reality is most people do ok. Not great but ok. Screw ups happen every once in a while and no people at work don't and shouldn't yell at you for that. Actually in most cases yelling will not solve many problem and also in many cases the one doing the yelling will be punished.

That just cases a toxic low morale environment.

Please name some. I haven't seen a decent MMO choice out there outside of EVE in over 15 years now.

OK. Below are some great mmos that I would play over WoW, because each has something that is really unique and interesting that I find more appealing than what is on offer in WoW. Note I still think WoW is a great game, I just would opt to play any of these before WoW.

Also I don't seem to be as jaded as some of the posters here who seem to think mmos all suck these days- except for that one love they might have. I think the games have generally gotten better over time and a lot of the hate I hear on these forums and elsewhere seems rather petty to me.

Anyway, with those caveats out of the way, here are some awesome mmos to enjoy:

DDO: amazing character customization and a true D&D feel- awesome game.
NWO: has this great Diablo-like feel, amazing atmosphere and one of the best combat systems in any mmo I've played
FF14: I have actually never lasted beyond the beginning levels, but I would definitely choose to play this over WoW. It looks amazing, has some interesting mechanics and there is just something magical about it - I wish they made a regular FF rpg in that world!
BDO: loved the crafting systems, the nodes, beautiful graphics/world, masterpiece.
GW2: one of my favorite games, I mainly played the spvp, but the other areas of the game are also fun, the world is filled with interesting this to discover, and the combat/animations are top notch.
Archage: pity about the p2w antics, but what seemed outrageous then has been normalised these days.
Tera: why play WoW when I could be killing BAMs?
ESO: great crafting system, immersive world, deep character customization and gearing system, good combat and best RvR currently on the market.

There are probably more, but I can't be bothered typing and I know you don't really like any of these games anyway.

Better question: why play any of those over games like Warframe, MHO, or any number of smaller-group multiplayer games that do the combat these do, but better?  BDO may be the only one that has a combat system that isn't objectively inferior to what you can get in a non-MMORPG, and even then it's not a genre-defining feature.

The rest offer little above and beyond mere multiplayer with shittier combat systems than their non-MMORPG counterparts, or force the player to endure the most classic of shit shops to play them.  GW2 has a nice world quest system that can result in your joining the zerg and the cash shop isn't at the level of, say, ArcheAge, but no more meaningful interaction than these zone trains occurs with any regularity between players.  Why would I play that and endure the cash shop shenanigans on top of it when I can just play another genre that does what those try to do (because they mostly left the massively part behind long ago) but better in most ways?

That sounds like a question for a different thread, but there are certainly major differences between mmos and small-group multiplayer games in terms of persistence and social aspects, and none of them have RvR as far as I know which is the main reason I play mmos.

Also, I would play single player games over those you mentioned anyway if we were going to go down that path. For example I'd much rather player Dragons Dogma than Warframe.
The only persistence missing is the game world itself, which has since been cut up into multiple copies of a game world in pretty much every modern MMORPG.  Social aspects have been cut or mitigated to the point you end up in the same boat: queue and wait.  MMORPGs have done a poor job encouraging anything else.

I've all but returned to singleplayer and smaller-group multiplayer because the MMORPG scene does little these days to encourage anything beyond auction listings and queue pops.  The auction listings don't, an MMORPG, make, and the queue pops can be had elsewhere with more enjoyable combat.

The genre is becoming increasingly irrelevant by trying to compete with these other genres at their own game, so to speak.
It sounds like you have a bad case of half-empty glass syndrome.

It can be frustrating when you start out and are guildless and friendless, but contrary to what you claim above there are plenty of opportunities in most mmos to hook up with other people.

Hell I popped into GW2 a few weeks back at some ungodly hour and in the space of a few minutes someone was chatting with me and took me on a tour through a WvW map. In the main mmo I play I get to play with other people all the time.

Was there some golden era where people would just start sucking your cock when you logged in or something?
No, just one where queues and rise of class role homogenization didn't turn other players into glorified NPC companions for 95% of the game's content.

    I'm playing Neverwinter right now.

I was playing GW2 but I was smashing it hard and got burned out from the grind they put into every single aspect of the game.

Best thing about Neverwinter is that the dungeon finder pops almost instantly, every time.. no exceptions. I think it's the only MMO where that still happens. It's a pure "let's get you straight into the fun" kinda game.

The crazy question is to get attention and I was drinking the night I made this, but I agree that Neverwinter is a contender... Voice acting, combat, co-op, playing with friends, graphics, group finder. I post this question because my computer can run anything and I still choose to play WoW, even when owning Witcher 3 Game of the Year Edition...

    Nothing.

I tried Final Fantasy XIV.  Leveled 2 classes to 70 and 2 to 60 (and then some).

One of the most boring MMPROGs that I've ever played, with far too much "disposable" content.  Also hated the iLevel throttles in the main story, forcing me to chain run and burn out on content just to get through the basic storyline.

Got to the point where just hearing that awful music would make me feel instantly exhausted about the game...  God...  I hate the music in that game (I'm probably in the minority... but I don't care.)

Not playing any MMORPGs, now.  Diablo III and Overwatch.  I stopped downloading and trying new games.

No MMOs are worth my time or money.  As I'm getting older, my time is getting more expensive.  A game has to be amazing to get a slice of it, and there is way too much mediocrity on the market.

WoW and EQ2 are good, but I've kind of personally played it out, and the player bases are more fickle than they used to be.  Hard to find reliable guilds with reliable players, etc.  EQ2 refuses to do heavy server merging... and keeps killing off guidls/servers with new "Progression Servers."  Hate scheduling raids that get canceled, etc. or spending half an hour looking for an Mythic+ group, etc.

Neverwinter is hard to stomach coming from WoW, frankly.

The graphics are pretty awful, the performance is laughably bad on pretty decent systems.  The combat isn't that great...

I guess it's okay as a F2P title, but why would anyone play that over Guild Wars 2, for instance?  I'm not really seeing the incentive - especially considering how heavily the cash shop plays into that game (comapred to GW2).

It's been some years since I've played Neverwinter, but it ran just fine on the CPU and GPU that I bought in 2009.  Looked fine, too.

As for the cash shop, I thought they were actually far too timid with it.  Yeah, there was stuff that you wanted to use diamonds for, especially ranking up the rarity of a companion.  But you could get so many diamonds from the game without spending any money that buying diamonds seemed superfluous.

Yeh, Neverwinter's cash shop and upgrade system sure is ugly on the surface and that puts people off but in reality it's probably one of the easiest games to play for free.

I had high hopes for Neverwinter when it launched. I hate cash shops so I took the most expensive package, thinking that this would have been enough to grand me everything. Then they released the drow elf as an extra package requiring more money.

That was the moment I wrote off all the money I gave them, deleted the game and swore not to touch it or anything those developers ever make.

I agree with you, but part of the problem is the gaming community itself.  A vast majority of gamers today are totally different in how they act, think, socialize, ect in games than they were when I started playing MP games way back when.  Their likes don't align with mine so I tend to stick with SP games or MP games where I can solo it and PUG if I need to.

Community is what keeps me from most MP games now days, not so much the games themselves.

Perhaps. To this day I haven't looked at a single thing concerning that game. For me it was it if was never released.

Also from that point onwards I'm extremely weary about games that do not offer subscription options. I nearly never tried BDO for that reason. I ended up playing BDO, liking the game and purchasing some things (giving the equivalent to the cash shop that I would give if subscribed). Only to discover when I got interested in an alt that all purchases were character locked. I stopped playing and moved on to other mmorpgs, the cash shop options killed any goodwill I had for that game.

Guild Wars 2, fun to just join in fighting a boss attacking a town and get credit without someone having to invite you, but having to remember your character name and not just email when forgetting your password, bought the game twice because of this, probably their shtick. The graphics are nice until you play a new Warcraft zone and realize you need to wait for Guild Wars 3 and Unreal Graphics Engine 4 before moving on from WoW...

The only game out there that's even worth bothering with has beautiful scenery, housing, in depth character customization, SHIPS that you craft , in depth crafting ( see SHIPS comment ), Diplomacy as a craft to be leveled up, Dungeons, Raids, Overland raid boss mobs, factions, and more... Vanguard EMU . levels 1 through 20 are finished and they are working on the mid range stuff now. plus while playing you are helping the development move along .

Most of us have been playing MMORPGs so long that we use the same name in all games, because we often run into people we have met in other games and the name makes us recognizeable.

I guess the current, fickle, player base don't put much value on their names, though :-P  So they use anything and then "forget" it.
